Thanks! The sail adds a huge amount of rotational resistance so you have to more or less roll in slow motion supported by sculling.

I found the best way to roll with large sail up was using a pawlata roll to bring the sail to the surface, then a reverse pawlata to finish the roll. Just make sure the mast doesn’t hit the bottom.

@@jeffdjtube Yes, I can see that two pawlatas can do the job but if you don’t get enough lift you might have to do another pawlata(/pair) to fully recover. Then it’s like sculling but with pawlata strokes 😉 I think I prefer sculling since I don’t have to reposition my paddle to do a pawlata….. To be honest have I never needed to roll with a raised sail (nor without any sail) and I am grateful for that. But I have had a sail stay break so my sail ended up lying in the waves making it harder to control my kayak going downwind in nice waves. It was a bit tricky to get sail back on board without flipping over 🥴

Very helpful, but do people only roll one way? (I'm much better to right than left)

@@radioknopf Hi! Sorry about my late response, I have been out paddling the last 6 days 😎 My kayak is an oldie called Eskimo produced around 1980 by P&H in Great Britain. Can’t remember the designer’s name but it was not Derrick Hutchinson who has designed many P&H kayaks.

I would like to see this in a strong wind at sea with the sail full, not in a pool.
