While this is true, this is pretty irrelevant as this approximation is extremely accurate for the first few hundred miles and we don't see that far anyways. However you can actually use the 8in/mi² when you use it "twice". So first you use your observer height, use the formula to calculate the distance of your horizon. This distance now need to be subtracted from the distance to the object and then you use the formula again for the remaining distance. Both of these lines will be tangents to the earth and touch the earth at your horizon. Though this would still just be an approximation because you will have a hard time to account for refraction this way.

I'm always surprised no one ever brings up LIGO. LIGO's arms are long enough that the curvature of the Earth was a factor in their construction. Over the 4 km length of each arm, the Earth curves away by nearly a meter.

There was a really cool art piece at burning man in like 2015 that was a mile long line of posts every 10 feet over a mile with two red lights on the post blinking. The top light on each post was the tangent line of earth's curve and the bottom light on each post was exactly the same elevation from the dirt over the mile. It was super cool to actually see the slight curve over the mile of red blinking lights. The location of burning man is an almost perfectly level dried lake bed so it worked well.

The simplest proof that 8 inches per mile squared doesn’t actually work on a sphere, that EVERYONE should be able to understand, is using an example of something halfway around the world. So something 12.5k miles, would have 104k feet hidden from it, according to that bad approximation, (but you don’t even need t do the math, just ask them if the result is literally infinity). However, obviously, something could be infinitely tall going directly away from us, and would never stop being blocked from view by the earth.

We live in a virtual realm, and the map (coordinate system) is stereographic. The plane of Earth is fixed & immovable. There is no curvature, no gravity, no dome, and no ice wall... Earth has 4 corners and 2 polar rotations. All of the luminaries in the sky are being rendered locally to each individual observer's circle of sight (eyes, cameras, etc.)... It’s also an approximation, not drop. The simplest proof of it, is that if you have an object on the exact opposite side of a sphere, it can be infinitely tall, and still be completely obscured. 8” per mile squared never reaches infinity, therefore is not an accurate calculation, just a rough approximation that matches up over relatively short distances.

For accurate long distance results you need to factor in the refraction index. Flerfs never account for this and don't record what it was when they set up these photo shoots. I don't doubt they purposefully ignore all the times at the same location where the refraction index is normal and they don't see near as far. Areas over bodies of water, their favorite locations, have a higher variation of refraction index due to a multitude of factors like temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressure, etc.

I like to go with personal experience. Have been in South Africa. During the Summer the sun rises and sets super…like super fast near the equator because of relative rotational speeds on a globe. On a frisbee planet the sun would have to physically move faster through the sky (is it 30,000 ft they say?) for places near the equator, than nearer the poles. At the same time.
