Thanks for the comment. Usually bathroom fans will run out the side of a building if it has a flat roof. If it does go through the roof it should be hard piped and sent through the roof. Then we can install a flange. Hope this helps.

My project is in Palm Springs Ca. The home is custom post and beam circa 1957 with (zero pitch) flat roofs at multiple heights. I have a drywall water damage at the center of the tallest room (living room). The water damage appeared after solar panels were installed. The roof is tar paper hot mop with rock. With the limited information provided, what is my best course of action to locate the leak other than looking for obvious scars or weak seams? FYI it is 110d today.

I would find a reputable roofing company to perform an inspection. How did they install the solar? If it was placed on top of the roof with out proper sleepers installed it could be the source of you leak. Damn that’s hot!

why not embed a mesh into the flashing with another layer of flashing on top?.. i find flashing by itself cracks once it dries out which is only a couple of years

Flat roofs are a nightmare, but they keep lots of roofers in business. We built sloping roofs in wet climates for thousands of years until the 20th C. I blame Walter Gropius and Bauhaus architecture.

What is the best way to find a leak on tar and gravel roof

Look around. Most leaks are noticeable splits and or penetrations. Make sure to move the gravel in the area. Hope this helps.

When they put a New roof.they normally.remove all that gravel.i work in a company.we remove gravel from the roof.with a industrial vacuum.

We have used the industrial vacuums a few times. They do an excellent job!

That repair will get them through another season. Replace that B-vent with a spun aluminum flashing, when the time comes to replace it.

Hey John. Thanks for the comment. Plastic cement definitely lasts more than one season and it is not a B-vent. Just a tall cone with a hat for a kitchen exhaust. Agree it should be replaced when the roof gets done.

The sad thing is, if you have a flat roof house, it's almost impossible to get a roofer to "repair" a leak. They always just want to re-roof or apply a coating unless it's a commercial roof like this one. My problem is even worse because I got solar panels... so replacing a roof means I need to add on $4000 just to remove and re-install the solar panels!.

It can be hard to find leaks on residential flat roofs, especially if there is solar or duct work on the roof which can have their own issues. When you do have to replace your roof ask that it be sloped with tapered iso to keep water from sitting in any one area. This can greatly increase the lifespan of a new flat roof.

well to repair you would need to remove the solar panels as well regardless... who the hell is going to find a leak for you on a roof covered in solar panels?

@@notimportant3686 No one! That's what I ended up doing last summer. Had to get the solar panels removed, and then, to be really sure that the roof problems were addressed, I had 6 (SIX) layers of roof removed to get down to the original deckboards, and put on an EPDM roof. 45K when it was all done to fix a leak. FML! At least now with a single layer membrane, it will be easier to address leaks when they occur again.

@@spuriustadius5034 well, there is your problem... where i live this is outrageously out of code... i think you are allowed 2 or max 3 roof layers before the next one has to be a tear down to apply another roof... because what happens is, the leak and the water is trapped in the layers and no matter how many layers you add, the roof is already compromised
