Flat tongs

You need tools to make tools, a tongs to hold the tongs to hold the tongs. This is my third generation tongs and as such, the first proper flat tongs made in this project. This time I had metal tools to forge it, not just stones and sticks. Metal tools gave me the possibility of punching a hole and rivet.
This could be where the journey ends. The tongs are identical to contemporary forging tongs. In that sense it is an end to the evolution of tools. But as stated in previous videos: This is not about objects, but human time spent, skills and embodied cognition. As part of a research project, I look at the way tools can be used. And the tools used in this video are less than optimal.
The poorly hafted hammer made the work tricky. I had no tool for making a hole back then, and no knife to fit the wood. The hammer moves around all the time. It is tricky to forge that way, but even if blows hit the wrong spots, a forging process take place. The second generation tongs performed well, but it kept changing its collar, involuntary adjusting the grip size.
The metal used is mild steel. The time to forge it was almost three hours (including the camera work).
Please, ask or comment if there is anything you want to know or say. Your comment makes the You tube algorithm notice the video and recommend it to others. And I am sure there is something I forgot to say.

Wonderful use of your previously made tools as bolsters. You've certainly proven that a lack of developed tools is no excuse for the smith!

Thank you. I am actually surprised myself. Never thought I would need that few tools. And as you say, the range of uses in tools originally made for something else.

Impressive! it's like primitive survival videos, but only parts of working with iron! I wonder, if you could made iron cooking pot with tools like this...

Thanks. Iron cooking pots would be no problem, perhaps I will some day. The problem would have been if I produced the metal from ore myself which I normally do not. Home made metal can be a bit tricky to get thin enough without cracks. But if I had a metal sheet, even a rusty one, a pot would be nice to make, it would be useful to make resin glue in. Thanks for the tip.

if you drill a hole into a branch and mount it level to the rock you can clamp fullers with a wedge.

Ah, yes, that would make sense, if I had a larger sledge and needed a two hands grip. Until then I guess the peen of the hammer would be enough to fuller with. Perhaps burning a hole would be easier than forging a drill that large. But soon I am making a larger hammer, one that could potetially be used as a sledge... I will just need a heavier anvil stone.

@@gustavthane2233 you could make a square hole with chisels then burn it to shape. or just use the square hole as-is.
