Working on a 38 flathead left behind by the us navy on d day (was on a generator). Took engine and generator apart yesterday after +65 years. The owner was going to sell it to get scraped ... just had to save the flatty

Great information! I never knew that hard to reach long cracks like the ones shown could be repaired . Thanks too for stating the reasons for most of these cracks. that is stemming from neglect of one sort or another. The repairs are all worth it though to see the flatheads live another day.

Most of the block cracks that are in the coolant area are because anti-freeze wasn't widely used in the times of these engines. When it get cold enough to freeze the water in the blocks caused the cracking. Anti-freeze back then was actually blended by mechanics. The cracks in the valve pocket area is a different story, they are from the engine running hot. That could be from poor cooling system maintenance, improper spark timing, a low water level and even bad thermostats. Usually the OE radiator was so oversized that the operator really had to neglect the engine for it to crack from excessive heat but that obviously happened quite a lot.

My '36 Ford engine has a crack and is leaking from the coolant valley on the back passenger side of the engine between cylinders 3 and 4, right underneath the cylinder head. There is some sort of epoxy patch over top of it. I will make a video of it on my channel soon.

Depending on how good of a welder you are, cant you just grind away any crack and stack blobs of beads until you have a surface large enough to machine down to what it was originally? just asking as i saw someone cut a chunck out of a piston and stacked welds to recreate the piston head ( obviously a piston isn't the same ) just wondering how difficult it would be to do on a cracked flathead block.

Kyle Henricks There was I believe a modification for the flathead to overhead inlet valves. The side valves for exhaust were still used. Also for the 100E by Willment. I had one with O/D also.

Are these heads still available? I am trying to find parts for a 337 and its been really tough to find anything.

Are the engines available new, new and improved?

To fix the water leaks just pour in a tin of Holts wonder weld. Job done. My grandad used it many years ago on his old Fordson standard tractor. Read the instructions. Best gear no kidding.
