The fourth dimension isn't time. Time is not spacial it's not a dimension. Why is everybody saying that.

time is the 4th TEMPORAL dimension. crating a line of time instead of space. the 5th TEMPORAL dimension would be a plane. a plane of alternate timelines where we made different choices and where events happened in different ways. finally we reach he 6th temporal dimension, which is a cube of many planes. each plane holding their own laws. in our plane we can bend he rules of mathematics with infinity and such and such but we can't break the laws of physics. there is another plane which is the exact opposite. and other planes which have different ways of looking at the universe. the seventh dimension would probably another line going in something that isn't space or time. but of course you are referring to simply spacial dimensions, each going in a direction which is of right angles to all previous dimensions. i'm not saying you're wrong, i'm just saying they're not wrong either. they're just looking at the nature of dimensions in a different way.

We live in three spacial dimensions and one linear dimension. That dimension is time. In time, we can only move in one direction (towards the future) and do so at one speed only (one second per second).

Time is not a dimension. It does not exist perpendicular to the other 3. We often talk about it as a dimension because we talk about something oriented in the 3 dimensions at a given point in time, but time itself is not a dimension because its non spacial, moves only in one direction, and is relative to velocity. It shares nothing with the other dimensions we are familiar with and is therefore not one.

I can't say I really expected this.... first off, who else came across this movie looking up Kristen Bell's filmography?... It's been a frozen-search the internet, kind of day. Second, I'm not huge on the actual look of the animation, but... I don't know, I'd watch it at least once.

+Denki Wolf Oh my god! This is kind of a coincidence! I just finished rewatching Frozen a while ago and I just searched Kristen Bell in the internet after I knew she voiced Anna! But while rewatching Frozen, I already had this tab in chrome opened where I googled Sphereland to read about it again but instead, tried watching this trailer and discovered in the comments section that Kristen Bell was also a voice actress here and I was like "What?? Didn't I just read about her a while ago when I knew she voiced Anna after I finished rewatching Frozen? And now, she also voiced Hex in Sphereland? wow How did things suddenly got all connected?"

nekif820 actually, funny update since then, I actually watched Flatland because of a TedEd seminar that was talking about the concept and directed itself to the first movie. It was interesting to say the least.

Denki Wolf Well, are you aware that there's also another film about Flatland? It's not made by the same creators of THIS^ movie but it's also worth a try in my opinion. But I gotta say THIS^ one's better and less complicated. The other one's also entertaining but the animation doesn't really compare to this one :P

Sphereland isn't 4-dimensional. It's 0D-Pointland, 1D-Lineland, 2D-Flatland and 4D-...land has not been named in this film series yet.

Ya, they read the book. they changed the main character to inspire young girls to become mathematicians or get interested in science.

I guess because when the book was written, women's rights (or rather the lack thereof) were one of the aspects of victorian society Edwin Abbott Abbott was commenting on. He was a feminist, supported the suffragette movement, believed women had true strength. (It's also interesting that he flips the tables and makes it so women can hurt men via penetration) but I wouldn't say that theme holds the same relevance today, so I'm glad they changed the story slightly, creating the visually pleasing and entertaining Hex character, making the overall storyline more concise. It's also nice that they made Hex a girl, so as not to completely remove the feminist themes :)
