Loved this video! Reminded me of flattening my solid Roubo made from 16/4 poplar slabs 3 years ago. Had to do minor flattening a year later but nothing since. Happy to watch someone else doing this job while I relax with a brew in the back yard😄.

You get nice shavings when going cross grain. I’ll have to fix my initial mistakes too soon, and that will include flattening the top.

I love how the shavings change depending on how you plane! I actually did a video about that :) definitely with it to address some of those things. In these 4 years I’ve had to do more than just flattening the top and trying the leg (I tweaked the wagon vise for example), but I’m so glad this is done!

Nice job. I too built a bench about 4 years ago and was in a hurry. I have been dreading the thought of flattening the top and fixing all of my mistakes. Knowing what I know now I may just build a new one with the features I like and use.

Brother, I was just thinking of making a Roubo workbench. I have never seen on KZbin that they do it with hand tools. Matt Estlea says doing everything by hand is completely insane and recommends using machines. But Roubo worked in the 18th century and I suppose he didn't use power tools. Hopefully, like Matt, you can sell your plans. a greeting

Hey! I did almost everything by hand because that’s all I have! I used my bandsaw to rip the 2x10s down the middle and to true up the legs quickly. I also used it for the t&g shelving. Other than that, hand tools! The laminating of the top took a few weeks maybe 2. I had to do it 2 boards at a time and then two groups of two boards at a time. Seriously, I only have a bandsaw and a power miter saw and the miter saw is not useful for much on this project. Anyway, I’m glad you enjoyed, and it is definitely possible to do this mostly by hand!

Building a Roubo by hand is insane, but if you don't have access to machines, your other options are to buy one, or find a class on building one. Do a search for "lost art press the anarchist's workbench" One of the top results should be a June or July blog post with a link to download a free pdf of the book

It is! Buying one isn’t always possible though. Seriously though, just doing the long rips in the bandsaw saved a ton of work. It took a few months but it was totally worth it, and I learned a ton!

Nice job! Flattening my bench top has been on my to do list for about 2 years; I used the same sort of lamination that it looks like you used. I think the dips and hollows are due to the cross grain shrinking occurring at different rates. Anything you learned that you can share wishing you knew before you started?

Hey! This was definitely a chore, but worth it! Cant say I learned much, really, except do it right the first time 😂😂😂 that who leg fixing part was so tedious.
