It’s always so awkward for me to plane with my right hand (which is what I have to do with the rabbet plane), but I feel like I’m getting better!

Brilliant video, good to see another southpaw woodworker. I have success swapping the fence to the opposite side of the rebate plane and using it left handed. You just have to be mindful about your depth as you can't use the depth stop, or the nicker for cross grain rebating.

I found another way to continue when the fence on the rebate (I'm from UK :) plane started hitting the bench was to just remove the fence. Once the rebate is a certain depth it seems to guide the plane. Still, if you have a shoulder plane it's probably less hassle just to grab that.

Nice little project. I especially enjoyed the end. When I was a pre-teen in the early 1960s, we moved to Mexico. It didn't take me long to become an enthusiastic Cantinflas fan. A new movie with him in it was always a big deal for me.

Ah the joys of watching a left hander use his right hand to make deep rabbets ... Remember, YOU are the only one able to see all the grueling work you put into sanding and re-sanding and smoothing that piece. Its really good without so much finicky sanding. In my opinion. Your work continues to improve and the times to create shorten accordingly.

Thanks ! Do you also use it for across the grain rabbets or do you use another one? Or are you fine with it for both. If you use a different one could you suggest/recommend one from Lie-Nielsen or Veritas?
@TheHandToolery
@TheHandToolery 3 жыл бұрын
@@edwardleonard9901 Hey! I use it for cross-grain, too! It works fine with the nicker, but it doesn't leave a great surface finish. So, I take it close to final dimension and then finish by hand. As far as other brands, I wish I could help more, but I have zero experience with them. Of course, I would love a skewed iron plane, but I don't have one at the moment. That said, I love the Lie-Nielsen look over the Veritas--purely preference for the older/classic style over the very modern Veritas.

@@TheHandToolery danmit, here in Brazil they are expensive (R$145, last time I checked). I will try to make a plane and need an accurate one, but so far has nothing been easy. Thanks, and nice art frame!
@TheHandToolery
@TheHandToolery 3 жыл бұрын
@@luizgabriel3388 Aw, sorry to hear that! If memory serves, I paid $20 (maybe more) for both, and at 5-1 exchange, that's R$100, so that is a bit of a markup for sure! Unfortunately, I've found that to be true a number of times, that products can be marked depending on the market.
