Flatwounds on your Acoustic Bass?

To be frank, the only time I really notice intonation issues is if I am listening for it or if I am accompanying my wife and decide to play higher on the neck. Otherwise, it's a sweet set of strings!

A nice video, thanks for that! I used flats on my Burns London in the '70s/'80s, and now I'm thinking of putting them on my Fender CB-60SCE.

Go for it! Flats are a joy to play on, and I can't imagine playing round wounds anymore.

I use LaBella Low Tension Flats on my fretless acoustic and absolutely love them

I compare playing bass with fingers after trying to play with a pick the same as wearing comfortable sneakers vs. heavy work boots. Following the same metaphor, playing flatwounds on a fretless bass is like walking barefoot in a grassy meadow!

Did you have any problems fitting the flats to your bass? I tried to fit D'Addarios, but the ball end winding was too thick to allow the pins/pegs to sit on top of the ball... the bottom of the pin sat on the top of the silk winding, which pulled the winding at the other end back over the nut.

If I understand what you are saying, the silk wrap at the ball end doesn't fit in the groove of the pins? I don't recall any issue with that, but as a proper bassist I change my strings every 10 years, so I can't really remember! I do have a custom set of pins (cool brass ones with mother-of-pearl dots made by some guy in the UK) that probably have a wider string channel in them, so maybe that's helping.

Many thanks for you time... that's helpful. Yes, that was exactly the issue. I guess that I'll just have to either modify the holes in the bridge, continue with the current strings, or buy a different acoustic. Thanks again.

Thanks, and I ought to take that and run with it. I really hear the dissonance when accompanying my wife's piano, but it probably is only me that hears it. At the height of the Beatles, Paul McCartney played an acoustic guitar left-handed even though it retained its right-handed bridge intonation; you can see it in old videos. If wonky intonation was good enough for Sir Paul, it's good enough for me!
