Rest in peace, little Eddie! // Please note: This is not one of the baby crows you saw in last week's video - they are fine! This fledgeling was the baby of Silas (nickname "Klugspatz" - the one that demands dog food all the time) & Poé.

Yes, life can be cruel. But I'm happy I had the chance to see Eddie (not sure if male or not. But I was planning to call him Edgar if he's a male and I thought Eddie could work for a girl as well.)

The early stages of a fledgling are the most dangerous. Flight feathers haven’t developed yet and they’re still heavily dependent on parental feeding. I just hope little Eddie didn’t suffer.

It think he was dead immediately. It happened while I was 200 metres away and when I got there the crow funeral had already started.

Very sad and touching at the same time. 🙁 Our complex world today is full of dangers, different dangers than those to which animals, crows, have adapted. They have to learn, they have to prepare for these dangers, and those who make mistakes can unfortunately perish. Fortunately, crows are well adapted and teachable, so they can turn these dangers to their advantage. There will be many little Eddie's who survive the train, let's not despair...
@corvusaeternus6 ай бұрын
They have lots of dangers there. The train, cats/dogs and then of course the birds of prey. Buzzards and hawks are often around. I know that it's hard for all little birds and that many (or most) don't survive the first time. But it hit's different when it's the fledgeling of a crow that you have a close bond with and when you witness the little body lying there and the crow funeral.

Yes... I was worried the whole time about the spot they built the nest. It was close to the railway track as well as very close to people (and dogs). So if the fledgeling left the tree on the other side it would have been on a path with hundreds of dogs every day. But I guess they had their reason for building the nest at that spot.

Aw, no! I'm so sorry. On the journey with my own crows, I've realized how easy it is to get attached to them. I think I'd be devasted if anything happened to Briar (or any of them, really), so I can imagine how sad this is for you. And especially for its parents. I hope they have better luck next year.
@corvusaeternus6 ай бұрын
Yes, it's easy to get attached to them... I would be devastated as well if something happened to the ones that I've known for a longer time and have a close bond with! There are some more babies that I think have not made it but I'm not sure since I haven't seen them but I'm missing Gandalf's & Loki's Baby. The fledgeling was already out of the nest and flying around. I haven't seen the fledgeling for a while now and am not sure if something happened or if it's just hidden very well. But I think I should have seen them together or seen them feeding so prabably something has happened to the baby as well... :-(

Never easy. My crows at the old house had one fledgling a couple of years before I moved. The day the parents gave it its own peanut to open on its own was the last time I saw it. And then some of those here, most all of the beach birds disappeared. It's never easy.
@corvusaeternus6 ай бұрын
I'm sorry to hear about the fledgeling with the peanut and the beach birds disappearing... Couldn't the beach birds just have moved to another territory?
@eriktorget1926 ай бұрын
@@corvusaeternus hard to say with the beach crows. We live on a narrow peninsula so territory is hard to come by, especially with the types of other birds here. That's one of the things that is something of a paradox in how all the various smaller birds will go after the bald eagles...that's not a good way to get invited to lunch. And the crows will go at them alone, if necessary. Plus whatever other predator birds are around. Although I don't think they would have much trouble with ground predators. But of the 5 pairs along that park frontage only the condo crows are still there. And I don't know how many of their batch from last year have made it this far. They had 5 that fledged but most I ever see is 4 including the parents. They have another group this season tho, I only see the male and maybe 1 juvenile, and the peanuts immediately fly back to the nest.

So sad. I'm worried with one of my guys right now, seems to be limping but flew off before I could tell for sure. On the other hand I'd be quite happy to take a blunderbuss to the seagulls, had around 15 around me today, crowding out the crows and generally being a PITA
@corvusaeternus6 ай бұрын
I hope the foot will get better! But as long as they can fly most get along. I've seen several limping in the past but it always healed (except for Captain Ahab but he's a different story with that special foot but also he was limping much more last year). Several crow persons in the past have complained about those English seagulls. I was never there so I don't know how bad they really are but I like the German seagulls. But also I've never seen crows on German beaches (I wonder if there are any or if that's completely seagull territory).
