I went back and looked for this moment after reading your comment and wow - the whole weight of the video just hit me. The passing of time, how it seems it was gone in a flash when it's over. Especially as a parent, that bunny moment gets me (the little vulnerable one you are taking care of will someday move on and it will seem like a surprise) Thanks for pointing out that detail!

I’ve always loved this song, and it’s always had a special place in my heart. Today, though, the meaning changed greatly for me and became more personal. Today I went to a funeral for a young boy from my high school who died of suicide. His name was Michael. As I lay in bed before going to sleep, I put on my relaxing songs playlist. This song came on and I instantly felt at peace. Then I heard the lyric “and Michael you would fall” and was shocked at how poignant and meaningful that line had suddenly become for me, and I cried. Thank you for writing this beautiful, haunting song and touching my life with it.

I didn't figure this out but this song refers to the French Revolution. If you didn't wear a red scarf like the rebels you were decapitated. I've also heard that high collar coats were popular at the time, which would explain the coats swallowing people in the song.

@sarahchicoine6328
@sarahchicoine6328 8 жыл бұрын
+Collin A. I have personally pictured this many times, as young children walking home from school, bundled so well that the coats swallow up their little selves. Follow that image with snow so deep and little ones being unbalanced, I imagine the big red scarves basically wrapped around their heads so they don't fall and get cold, wet snow all over their face. In my mind, when Michael falls, probably because he's waddling in his oversized puffy coat trying to keep up but is the last one running behind, his scarf comes undone and he falls backward, and the scarf just billows everywhere as he laughs on the ground. The narrator sees the scarf and starts to daydream, imagining that Michael is now laying in a field of red strawberries in the middle of summer. The transition seems reminiscent of Olaf's musical number in Frozen, though that movie came later. Same basic principle though. I like that they left it open to interpretation, because the listener can make it mean whatever they want it to. The French Revolution is a very clever, educated guess, but it doesn't have to be morbid or gory if someone doesn't want it to be. My imagination took me to that whimsical, childhood place because that's most natural to me, as a daydreamer who remembers what she was like as a kid, and who is now a mother. You could just as easily find a completely different meaning just by watching the video, which I love by the way. The pack is young, but poor Michael can't keep up and turn back time, so now he's old and perhaps he gets hurt or dies. Who knows. It really is up to us. 😊

If this were true, they'd be singing "and *Michel you would fall and turn..."
@heckkaGEE
@heckkaGEE 8 жыл бұрын
I found this online on a forum about the meaning of this song. I felt this hit it right on the spot BUT art is subjective. The song is different things for different people. Give it a read anyway... :) "The line about following the pack, following their coats does bring up images of kids. I also relate it to people following a certain trend. The scarves tied round their throats could refer to a fear of becoming socially unacceptable if they were to stop following the ways of the masses. Its almost as if thats the only thing thats keeping them alive. "And I turned round and there you go" could refer to him being awakened by a friend of his who was never part of whatever specific way of life it may be referring to. But then in the line "Michael you would fall, and turn the white snow read as strawberries in the summertime" conjures up images of injury or failure. But since he says "turn the white snow red as strawberries in the summertime" maybe his fall is a good thing since the imagery used is so beautiful. Maybe his "fall" is a step forward."

Except it does not. A palindrome is the same forward and back, which means if you played this video in reverse you wouldn't be able to tell a difference. It would also put the pivot point in the middle of the video, but in this case, things do not start to reverse until near the 2 minute mark. The easiest way to tell this isn't a palindrome is to just watch the first 15 seconds and then the last 15 seconds.

It annoys the piss out of me that people are all saying, '----- did it better'. It's not about who did it better. The versions are different and they both have appeal for different reasons. Some like the rustic folk sound with guitars and simple three part harmony while others like a 'contemporary acappella' version. How about you appreciate both of them for the qualities they both possess. I like Fleet Foxes better but not because I think Pentatonix didn't do a good job. I like the feel of this better but I also like Pentatonix too. Quit comparing them to say one is better than the other. Seriously. Let them both speak to your heart.

Wow. Calm down everyone. This song has been covered by 6 different artists. It has been parodied, it has been used in a movie soundtrack and as the opening to a HULU series. In order to record and use the song the artists have to get permission and pay royalties. This is common practice. Nobody is ripping anybody off or stealing songs. The Pentatonix version becoming popular benefits Fleet Foxes by bringing their music to the attention of people who might not have been familiar with them. It's a win-win for both groups. This original version is fantastic and the claymation video is very creative. The Pentatonix version has a fantastic arrangement with creative percussion. It's all good people, just relax and enjoy.

I feel like this song means don't waste time. The story is related to the music video and is about those clay people who are old and weak and can't work. "I was following the pack" means a person in those clay people is saying that he was with the pack of old guys/following their pack of old guys. "All swallowed in their coats" means all with their old skin. "With scarves of red tied round their throats" means death awaiting for them. "To keep their little heads from falling in the snow" means they are trying hard to survive knowing they'll die any moment. "Then I turn round and there you go" means that wheel they turn in the music video which brings their past. As you can see, their hair turns from Grey to black and their faces from old to young. One of them even caught a rabbit which a strong and quick person can do. So they keep turning the wheel to get the past back. "And Micheal you will fall" the person turning the wheel is Micheal and the singer says he can't do it he can't bring the past back. "And turn the white snow red as strawberries in the summertime" (summer means young age because all were happy then and winter means old age cause all are sad now) and you can't bring back our summer, our happy past, like in the video where Micheal keeps turning the wheel which brings out summer from the winter, You gotta do and try everything in the present so you won't regret it in the future thinking about the past. You shouldn't waste your time. Do you think this meaning suits the lyric ?

I really love this song. But I do have a question. I feel like the "Hymnal" in the title suggests a religious element and I'm not a religious person so I have no belief based outlook or any biblical background information so bear with me here; The lines that are most interesting to me are: And I turned 'round and there you go And Michael, you would fall And turn the white snow red as strawberries in the summertime But there's only one thing I can think of that could turn white snow red as strawberries and that's blood, and it got me thinking is it alluding to Michael as in the angel Michael? Or is there a meaning I'm completely over looking or missing entirely? Or is it just a poetic song I'm over thinking? Anyone feel like enlightening me? I really like this song and it makes me want to know what this story it is telling means. P.S. not trying to stir up some religious controversial argument here. I'm asking for information from someone else who has that information, nothing more. Believe and trust in what you want, if you've found God then that's a great achievement many people struggle to obtain. If you don't look for God that's cool too, I'm sure you have an equally devoting aspect you choose to focus on - I do. Knowledge for knowledge's sake I guess this is lol as such, lets not start a wild fire fight.

Sadly, I too don't know the answer to your question. But I wanted to point out that yours is one of the few pacific and interesting comments I've read so far on KZbin. So, great job! Everyone should be so earnest in questioning something they don't know.

after a google search, i found this: Lead singer and songwriter Robin Pecknold (from Daytrotter): "It's lyrically fairly meaningless. As an introduction to the record, (this was intended to be the opening track on the album), we thought it would be nice to start it with a simple jam that's focused on singing - on the record it starts with a tongue-in-cheek harmony thing that we hoped would make people laugh or something but I think it just confuses them. This is my favorite song to play live, though singing it live is sometimes difficult because the lyrics are so vague. Weird how that works!"

It just seems to be a fun song with a lovely melody and harmonies to me. The pack, wrapped in red scarfs, is children, to my mind. Michael fell in the snow and the contrast of the white snow and his red scarf reminds the singer of strawberries. That's all I think it means. Not necessarily any deeper than that. Just vivid imagery. I find it lovely. The video was moving, though I didn't see the connection with the song. It was still moving to me.

The lyrics have imagery of being a member of a pack, and falling behind; of red throats, of falling and turning the snow red. The video has imagery of possibly lone members of a former pack, all having parted ways; of turning back time and being unable to keep it there. Combined, it seems to me it is nostalgia for the pack, and and for the now separated or departed members; for that time together as family or dearly close friends; nostalgia for that irretrievable time of togetherness and youth. That's just my take, but I'll hold firm any which way one can interpret this, it's a remarkably beautiful work of art.

Everyone is going on about Pentatonix, how they 'ruined the song' or how they 'made it way better'. Then there are others going 'how DARE Pentatonix cover this song, my life is ruined!' Smh This is a great song, and personally in my opinion I think the Pentatonix cover is fantastic too. But oh no try to burn me at the stake because I have an opinion -_- PEOPLE HAVE OPINIONS. Deal with it. Don't be the person who thinks they can talk to people like they're dirt just because you're safe behind you're computer screen. C'mon people. Come on.
