Two bits of satellite trivia: The manifolds were designed and built by the FDNY shops in response to a need for multiple hand lines at a fire scene. The manifold would be placed closer to the fire building providing a high volume of water with shorter stretches of hose lines. The manifolds reduced the need of stretching long hose runs from pumpers to the fire location which maybe a few blocks away. During the “war” years (1960s-1970’s) it saved firefighters time as the busy sections of NYC experienced a high volume of fire activity. The original Mack satellites, built in the 1960’s, were designed as hose wagons supplying additional large diameter hose for the Super Pumper System. The satellites were not designed to carry extra quantities of foam as we see on later generations. The addition as additional foam carriers was the result of a need. In the 1970’s an oil storage tank in Red Hook, Brooklyn caught fire in the evening hours. FDNY engines were cooling the tank with water. In the late morning or early afternoon the tank exploded with a fireball and thick black smoke. The chief on the scene ordered a third and fourth alarm within minutes of each other. Chief of Department, John T. O’Hagan requested any available foam from outside agencies and commercial sources. Oil Companies, refineries etc. sent foam from it’s facilities. NYPD, New York, New Jersey State Police as well as the Port Authority on NY & NJ provided escorts. It was after this incident that FDNY made it a priority to have a quantity of foam available for future situations.

If it was an oil tank fire, they would have used AFFF, not the Hi-Ex that is carried now.

Nice job, Skyler. I'm a retired Federal Agent who use to be a call/volunteer firefighter in the small town I lived in outside Boston. I have been a fire buff since I was very young and drove my parents crazy with listening to and chasing fires in a large city next to the one I grew up in. Being a firefighter was my calling but unfortunately the government called me and before I knew it I was in the army. Ten years later and a college degree in my pocket, I became a Federal Agent and I retired after breaking my neck twice. I actually worked at Ground Zero, the Twin Towers for three months working on my hands and knees then hunting down ragheads in the 5 boroughs of NYC. After I die I hope to come back and live in NYC so I can become a FDNY member. I hope it happens. Again, great video and thanks for chasing the fires too and providing your videos.

Great work on the Fleet Fridays man! I’m a huge fan and avid watcher of all your videos! I am a Paramedic/Firefighter from Canada and I love to see the work done by the FDNY and all of the other departments that you have covered! As a paramedic myself, I was wondering if you’d be interested/able to do a Fleet Friday on some if the FDNY EMS vehicles, more specifically some if the Rescue Medic vehicles? I think the Rescue Medic program is amazing and I would really like to see what equipment they carry on their rigs! Keep up the great work! If you ever come out to Western Canada give me a shout! I would love to show you around and get some video of some of our specialty units!

@SkylerFire Жыл бұрын
As a 2nd Satellite they deployed it yes. The first satellite was Sat 6. Some areas of the city they might have to grab water further away so they don’t lose pressure.

Are the Engine Companies they are assigned to for high pressure engine companies/does the new super pumper have a satellite assigned with it? (Reading a lot, there have been a few conflicting explanations from other sources).
@SkylerFire6 ай бұрын
The associated engine with the satellites used to be the only 2000gpm pumps but now all are. Super pumper will get 2 satellites probably.

@JohnpaulDejoria666 Жыл бұрын
To hold the lights, the cab is a garbage truck cab and wouldn’t support the lights.

I believe it’s not flat also so they have to mount the lights. It’s a garbage truck cab

If the rig doesn’t have a pump, then it ca not draft water. Is the suction hose just carried as a spare/additional length for the supply engine?
@SkylerFire Жыл бұрын
For the engine
@jarnigansonmortuary681 Жыл бұрын
So if the satellite doesn’t have a pump what are the connections on the truck used for just to get water to the water gun on top?
@SkylerFire Жыл бұрын
Basically yes, or they can gun the 6inch into the satellite and then have a 3inch going into a tower ladder, blitz fire, manifold. But they also have mini manifolds they can use instead.
@thcode4 Жыл бұрын
How it is suppose to draft without a pump? Does the deck gun then rely on and engine for water and pressure control?
@SkylerFire Жыл бұрын
Yes the engine supplies the deck gun… I believe it’s 2 engines for it to get its max pressure.

That would be an "adventure" getting it from the Bronx's to JFK, which I hope is never needed. It would be stuck on the Van Wyck for at least an hour in traffic at almost all times of the day. Anyone familiar knows how it's always backed up to Atlantic Ave in both directions normally for no apparent reason.

Basically the same as the original super pumper satellite trucks. The 1965 units o Mack C series chassis only carried 2000 ft of special 4 1/2 inch high pressure hose, and a stang monitor on top. No foam equipment. The large tender unit that ran with the super pumper had the same compliment of 4 1/2 inch hose but in addition to the larger stang monitor on the tractor it also had a 4 1/2 “ manifold built into the rear of the trailer that could also feed smaller outlets on the side of the trailer. In the very front portion of the trailer the was a compartment big enough to climb into that held all the tips and every conceivable fitting for any water supply scenario including mutual aid adapters etc. When first purchased it even had a rear facing tiller seat and steering wheel on top of the divider in the hose bed. Supposed to have been used for maneuvering the train tight fire scene conditions. It was removed soon after. Incidentally the monitor was originally a Mc Intyre unit just like the ones on the fire boats of the era. It was soon replaced with a stang unit.
