Oh wow Skyler, these rigs are brilliant! We sure could have used a couple back when I was a jolly volly in the 80s. Magnificent idea and video.

Hi, skyler. At the bottom of the hydrant, where the actual valve is. There's a weep hole to drain hydrant when it's shut off. Sometimes, it gets clogged. Then the water is at lip of the spout. Subject to freezing temperatures. That is why sometimes you see water coming out of cracks in the sidewalk, when hydrant is on. Also, the number on the body of the hydrant is the size of the watermain. Great job on fleet Friday.

Thanks for info! I did know about the number tho lol

Satellite hydrants are actually left over from the original super pumper days. Put at locations where very large mains are and two closely spaced hydrants were needed to get enough flow. A commanders car responded with the super pumper with maps of all these locations.
@SkylerFire10 ай бұрын
Yeah all satellites and the super pumper now still have maps

So during non winter seasons time, is it just used for fire hydrant maintenance and upkeep?

Random thought while watching: I wonder how many Haligans are in the FDNY inventory department wide…
@SkylerFire10 ай бұрын
Well you figure 3 per company. And then special units have them. Plus chiefs so maybe in the 500-600 range

When activated in cold snap do they staff this truck 24/7? How many days above freezing does it take to deactivate the unit?

Nice video, FDNY replacing them soon? Same for CPC and SSL yet ?
@SkylerFire10 ай бұрын
No, they are 2016s have another 10+ years. Most SSLs are newer 2015s. Most CPCs have been refurbished and repainted. CPCs maybe nothing right now. The older CPCs are mostly in Manhattan and aren’t vent support so not used as much as others.

Skyler, It a great video! I was wondering if the FDNY still had Thaw units? Had not seen them in any videos or pictures. I remember in the 80's, the first time that I ever saw a thaw unit. They were GMC K-3500/Saulsbury with a box body & roll up overhead door, in the back. Never saw one in action. Up my way the water department has a "Steam Jenny" in a panel van. Not an emergency vehicle. This is a nicely set up seasonal rig. It's that time of year, 🧊hydrant
