It's interesting that Brad often defines songs as only suiting one mood, or one type of activity. Yet we used to play these albums (not songs) on cassette players in the car, and our 'internal tone' would just shift with each song. No one was looking to soundtrack their thoughts or activities with consistent patterns. I've never thought about it that way before, but if you grow up with 'playlists' instead of 'albums,' it leads you to believe that groups of songs should align in theme like it's a Spotify recommendation list, or our playlist for working out or something. Previous generations would just 'find' that mood within themselves when they got to that song. I'm not sure what any of that means, but I'm always fascinated by the invisible parts of life--like how we might define whether or not songs 'belong' in one context or another.

It's not even your opinion and you're going to smear Stevie's creativity? Read those lyrics. That isn't a simple song. This is Fleetwood Mac at their absolute peak. What amazing lyrics - so evocative and unique - delivered by the beautiful voice of Stevie Nicks. Every instrument contributes perfectly to create that spooky, sultry sound. In 1977, the album that this was from, "Rumours" was all over the radio. Every single song from it was played on rock radio. There are very few examples of this: Beatles - Abbey Road, Led Zeppelin IV, Pink Floyd - Dark Side Of The Moon, Steely Dan - Aja.

@@Spo-Dee-O-Dee Intriguing theory, but both "Dreams" (Stevie, #1) and "Don't Stop" (Christine, #3) charted higher than anything later, so the "cannibalization" couldn't have been too bad. Christine just wrote the more successful songs in the '80s. (As for the 1976 album, both "Rhiannon" and "Say You Love Me" reached #11, so that's a tie. Although Christine also had "Over My Head" at #20. [Strangely, "Landslide" was never a single.] Stevie crushes her on "Tusk", though; "Sara" got to #7, but "Think About Me" stalled at #20. [Lindsey's title track was #8, and was the bigger hit in the UK.]) With thanks to Wikipedia, obviously.

This song is clearly, at least in the beginning, about powder cocaine use from a time when by far most users snorted it through the nose. Many times with a very tiny little silver spoon that hung from a chain around your neck. Digging your grave with a silver spoon is a clear reference to that. It is no secret that Stevie had a severe addiction to it to the point she burned a hole the size of a dime in her nose, it is said. "Color my World" by Chicago" is all Chordal Arpeggios Sweep picked from 6 String to 1st String and not one Chord is Strummed, it was transferred to piano in the Studio! One of Stevie's greatest songs. It's about her.... and her experiences as a "queen" or "ruler" after becoming successful. She got caught up, unexpectedly in cocaine (of her own admission), often delivered in silver spoons outlined in diamonds, delivered in "velvet bags," as she once stated - they (her and the group) never bought it... "it was just around." When starting out on the road to success, she was glared at by other girls, the same girls who would instantly turn their frowns to smiles when a guy entered a room. In the end, gold dust woman is about Stevie. She never thought that not long before becoming successful, she couldn't buy a thing. But suddenly, she could walk into a store and buy anything she wanted. Yes.... she had become a queen, but would she make a good lover? The song is very poetic of her life and experience(s) of herself. Fantastic song!

Great reaction, The song is about Stevie's cocaine addiction! the moaning and howling at the end is Stevie. when she does it live it's very frightening.

You can never go wrong with Fleetwood Mac. But treat yourself to a song where Christie McVie is on lead vocals. "You Make Loving Fun" or "Everywhere", "As Long As You Follow", etc.

Now, gotta listen to the cover by Hole off the The Crow: City Of Angels soundtrack. 👍🏼 Dunno which Fleetwood Mac songs y’all have listened to already but I wanna make sure ya know there two women that sing in the band, and also “the boyfriend” is a singer/songwriter who sings lead occasionally as well. So there’s all that.

It's interesting to me when Brad asks when would you listen to this song. I grew up in the 70's and 80's and all I had was the radio. We didn't get to control which song came on next-(like we can now with whatever platform) we just listened to what ever came on the radio. Luckily for us people living in the 70's and 80's, what came on next was one great musical artist after the other and we were exposed to all types of music. Keep up the good work- love listening to the music and your perspectives!

The "Silver spoon" in the first line is referencing 'nose candy"; Stevie was already worrying about her 'habit' & having trouble in her relationship with Lindsay Buckingham (harmony vocal & guitar)

There were 2 couples in the band. Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham were a couple and Christine and John McVie were married. And I never thought about it, but when Lex mentioned it, I did see where she was coming from with the whole swamp vibe and firefly thing. Oh, and a female stream is a great idea. There are a lot of great female rockers out there.
