Gypsy to Stevie...is like a hippie...earthy...free spirited...the kind of clothes she wore and was drawn to in the 70's...hair accessories...etc . The first line...'So I'm back to the velvet underground...back to the floor that I love...to a room with some lace and paper flowers...back to the gypsy..that I was...Stevie in am interview talked about the velvet underground being a store she loved to go to to get all her scarves she wore back then...and the flowy clothes...and lamps...and she talked about how she and Lindsey had a one bedroom place and she would have her scarves draped over her lamps..sitting on the floor in her room...mattress on the floor too...writing her poems aka songs...she calls them poems...(Lindsey as we know turns them into liquid gold)...but yea that was her being the gypsy...that she was...before they joined FM...just trying to make it every day...pursuing their passion for music/writing

Back in the day, all the sitcoms and variety shows from "Gilligan's Island" to "Laugh In" had gypsies featured at one time or another. And Cher had a song called "Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves". They were portrayed as drifters and sometimes scam artists or thieves. They traveled around in covered wagons and found a way to survive. It wasn't flattering.

I think this is her best song. As usual she seems to be dealing with the breakup with Buckingham. Something in the message here makes it seem more permanent and real than most of the others songs they wrote about each other. My GF's lineage is eastern European gypsy (Romanian). She doesn't like the American usage of the word at all and doesn't like this song. In America gypsies are just thought of as odd vagrants with weird beliefs.

Some songs and bands are honestly better off without videos, such as with ELO or Supertramp. Fleetwood Mac is not in that category. This video was very well done! I love the clips and references to the Great Depression. And I think this is one of those songs that the video is relevant enough to make a difference in the song, for me, as opposed to as if I had only ever heard the song without it. But Mtv was like oxygen for me in the 80’s and in my head, the aesthetics and art of video defined a lot of music for me. I was still in elementary school when this came out. I had a single mom who was never home so I was basically raised by Mtv. I miss my Mtv. 😔 And I am SO much like the character in this song.
