They were "chained together" because they were in the same band together. During the recording of this album, singer/guitarist Lindsey Buckingham and singer Stevie Nicks ended their longtime relationship, and Bassist John McVie and his wife, singer/keyboardist Christine McVie got divorced. Kind of tough to go through a break-up, but still be in a business arrangement like a band. That angst bled out all over this album. Check out "Go Your Own Way" from this album.

John and Christine McVie were married. Stevie and Lindsey were a couple. Lindsey wanted more but she (Stevie) just wanted to live together. Stevie began sleeping with Mick Fleetwood, the drummer. John and Christine...I don't know what they were doing, but they ended up divorced. Stevie and Lindsey ended their relationship. They had a never ending supply of cocaine. Let's not forget the drugs. The massive amounts of coke Lindsey and Stevie were doing didn't help matters. Lindsey hasn't come forward with the whole truth but he was doing Tusk and he was, well, coked to the gills. He was extremely physically, emotionally, and verbally abusive to Stevie so I can understand why she would want out of the relationship. Even recently he hasn't changed which is why he's not in the band right now. Or so the rumors go at the moment. He's talented but he needs serious help. Mick may be one of the few that made it through relatively unscathed and with most of his money.

In 1977 Fleetwood Mac released one of their most iconic albums, Rumours. On this album was The Chain, a favourite among many Fleetwood fans. Stevie Nicks wrote the lyrics about Lindsey Buckingham as their relationship was falling apart and Buckingham and Nicks share lead vocals on the song. Pieces of different studio takes were joined together to form the track. The bass line that comes in at about the 3-minute mark through the song was written by John McVie, who was originally planning to use it in a different song. The beginning of the track wasn't working, but the band loved Mick Fleetwood and John McVie's ending so, they counted back from the bass line, used the kick-drum as a metronome, Nicks gave them the lyrics for the verses, Buckinghan and Christine McVie wrote the music and the chorus lyrics, Lindsey added the guitar over the ending, and 'The Chain' was made. It's the only Fleetwood Mac song credited to all five members of their 1977 lineup. "'The Chain' basically came out of a jam. That song was put together as distinct from someone literally sitting down and writing a song. It was very much collectively a band composition. The riff is John McVie's contribution - a major contribution. Because that bassline is still being played on British TV in the car-racing series to this day. The Grand Prix thing. But it was really something that just came out of us playing in the studio," Mick Fleetwood said. "Originally we had no words to it. And it really only became a song when Stevie wrote some. She walked in one day and said, 'I've written some words that might be good for that thing you were doing in the studio the other day.' So it was put together. Lindsey arranged and made a song out of all the bits and pieces that we were putting down onto tape. And then once it was arranged and we knew what we were doing, we went in and recorded it. But it ultimately becomes a band thing anyway, because we all have so much of our own individual style, our own stamp that makes the sound of Fleetwood Mac." "So it's not like you feel disconnected from the fact that maybe you haven't written one of the songs. Because what you do, and what you feel when we're all making music together, is what Fleetwood Mac ends up being, and that's the stuff you hear on the albums. Whether one likes it or not, this is, after all, a combined effort from different people playing music together."

One of my favorites is on the album Mirage and for a change Christine McVie sings it rather than Stevie Nicks. Christine's voice is what makes this song so special to me. " wish you were here" also yes it's a break up song. Both couples in the band were breaking up The McVies and Nicks and Buckingham, but they decided as far as the band goes they had something too special to let go, so as they are personally breaking up they chose to stay together as a band.

This album had 4 top 10 hits. The chain was not one of them. But it was the track that made this album whole. A full group collaboration.

For best impact, check the live performance from 1982 Mirage tour. The two leads dated and watching them scream the vocals at each other live in stage is everything. You also get to see the entire band in action. They’re amazing. Also, this song has a long history culminating with each member having contributed to the final version and thus reaping the profits from their biggest hit ever.

Just watching people react to this Legendary track is awesome. The swampish type guitar and drums for 2/3 of the track is kinda mesmerising, but when that first BONG hits, well that’s another story.

I was born in 1980...but my parents listens to everything. I know the story of Stevie and Lindsay and the others members relationship turmoils. My favorite is the live performance of of "Silver Spring." The way those two look at each during the performance...EPIC!

As good a rock song off one of the best rock albums ever done. They won every award that year for this record and deserved everyone of them. Other songs from these guys are Second News is awesome! Blue Letter, World Turning, Monday Morning, are a few more good ones.

The live recording (concert film - The Dance) is amazing - because Stevie and Lindsey were just STARING at each other, playing to the emotional notes of the songs. It's a powerful moment. GREAT tune borne out of heartbreak and angst (and allegedly a LOT of cocaine use).

Fleetwood's drumming and McVie's bass drive this song. Then the harmonies. Buckingham's lead guitar. It's all so perfect. I love many of Fleetwood Mac's songs, but this is probably the one that always moves me like I'm hearing it for the first time.

This was and still is one of the best studio albums ever done. Every song is practically a hit. Regardless, this song has deeper meanings than just the lyrics. So much deeper. And what can I say about the bass line and guitar solo, other than scream to the top of my lungs "AWESOME". Their legacy is beautiful and it isn't easy for any other artist to fill in their shoes. Kind regards and stay safe.

Probably their best song, especially as every member added to the songs writing ...and all the emotional stuff in the background (almost the entire band was having relationship brake-ups with other band members at the time), oh and they where all high as hell! This song was about no matter the fact that they all hated each other at the time they KNEW that the band and the music was something special, ie: the chain that held them together, and no matter the pain it was worth it. this is their song about them, the song that starts all of their concerts. this is their pain and love put into verse

What makes these guys so potent is the fact that Nick's and Buckingham wrote all of these heartbroken songs about each other. Somehow they managed to perform them together.

India, the best thing about your channel is your humanity and it's imperfections. Whether it is mispronouncing a name or hearing those bundles of joy in the background! This makes you unique and special! Perfection is boring!

These two singers in this band were together and everything went upside down with other band members. They still play though. Their chain has been weak a ton in decades past, but it's not broken.

Hi. French-Canadian here, I hope my strange english will bve comprehensible enough to get my point across! I love your takes on lyrics, your play on semantics (if that makes any sense?) More importantly, I love the "humms", the "ooos" and the faces you make when the going gets good in a song. Simply put, I love you and I love what you do! Cheers, from Montréal!

Love the Mac. That album hit when I was in junior high and cemented them as one of the biggest rock bands. They had already been charting from this incarnation from the White album for two years. 3 singer song writers, 2 women and a man. The guy also one of the greatest guitar players of all time, one of the women a great blues keyboard. Harmonies on their vocals like heaven. We loved them. There just weren't that many women in rock n roll back then.

"Go Your Own Way" is another Rumors song of theirs that has to do with Lindsay Buckingham and Stevie Knicks relationship, another top hit. This is one of the greatest rock bands in history - 3 Brits & 2 "Yanks" - that brought their great talents together and created musical masterpieces. Keep checking out at least the "Rumors" album, one of the top selling albums of all time.

Your analysis is right on point when this album was made all of them bandmembers were fighting four of them were divorcing and two of them were having an affair with the other spouse. They all came together to record this album with so much strife and emotion and the result was actually fantastic. But you can hear the anger and turmoil in this song.

Arguably, one of the 70's titans that I never got to see live. Also, one of the few regrets I have. I was gonna check out a show while they doing their reunion tour...but $300 a pop for "nosebleed" seats at the arena I was gonna go to was quite prohibitive.
