Fleming Retrospective

In November 2011 Fleming Yachts celebrates the 25th anniversary of the arrival in the USA of Fleming 50 Hull #001. Since the arrival of that first boat more than 220 55's, 29 65's and 14 75's have been built and been delivered all around the world. This video documents the building of the first boat as well as key events in the history of the company over the past 25 years.

Curious you've stated in the past your not American but at 11:36 I'm reading American was this incorrect or has it become more cost effective to be American ?

I was born and brought up in the UK. My accent in the videos makes that obvious. When we started Fleming Yachts 34 years ago our main market and most of our contacts were in the USA so it made sense to apply for US citizenship because I expected to live here. The process took 11 years.

Why not build them in the US? They are wonderful boats and the Taiwanese look like they are very skilled, but if built here, would avoid the shipment across the Pacific and would give Americans jobs.

Although Taiwan is also known as the Republic of China, when most people say "China" they mean the People's Republic of China. Many Taiwanese companies have moved some or all of their manufacturing to China, but Tung Hwa has not; they believe that the skill levels of their Taiwanese workers are higher than what Chinese workers would bring, and that any savings in labor costs would be offset by quality losses and time increases.

Ironic, I'll take a Taiwanese built boat over a french built one. I have both, and the Taiwanese boat have more quality on it compared to the brand new one I bought in France only a couple of years ago.
