interesting fact, flemish giants were used in teletubbies so they wouldn't give away they scale of the costumes and set.

@tryviatokyo4 жыл бұрын
blank hole Unfortunately I had some family difficulties and we couldn’t take care of him, we were practically forced to surrender him back to the shelter, but I think he was about 1 year old.

Thanks, this is really useful. We're going to clip our rabbit's nails. She's almost 6months, beautiful and such a cuddle hungry fluff. Ive been nervous about clipping as we don't want to stress or hurt her. As a flemish giant, if she gets nervous, she could really damage herself, so it's good to know the facts. You're so calm with your rabbit, he's really sweet. Lucky to have you as a loving bunny mum x

My first 1 was over 9.5 kilos and around 1 metre long when she laid down. A very gentle breed that loves to just sit for a pat and a nibble on some short bread biscuits as an occasional treat. Any time I walked into the house with a plastic bag she came jumping up expecting a biscuit.

The breed is way older ...goes all the way back to the Roman empire , they where bred by the Galliërs (Belgea) in Belgium for fur and Meat.....its until the 16 century that they where reconised as a Belgian breed and called the Flemish Giant. So the breed is 2000 years old.

Yeah I think were a bit sensitive today, if people get offended by the idea of using a rabbit as food or for the fur. That was a huge reason why rabbits are so, important and like you said, why the flemmish were bread originally. Rabbit fur is so soft, and warm for things like gloves or hats, I dont eat rabbit but not gonna lie, every time I have had a pet rabbit pass from natural causes at the end of its life, part of me wishes i could keep the fur, but I dont cuz of respect of course lol its so soft. Id wear a whole rabbit fur suit, if it was from "sheared" bunnies or something, but I dont want a suit made of butt fluffs lol

The only kind of Flemish giant rabbit breeders I can find within an 8 hr drive from where I live breeds them for meat. Which is disgusting. But they also do not care about breeding aggressive rabbits/biters.

Tame rabbit is great for eating. Yes the Flemish are nice animals but in my opinion the New Zealand, Californian and Champagnes are a better option. Not as big, less food cost and less overhead. 😀
@alliechampagne14044 жыл бұрын
Huh? People raise meat rabbits all the time! They generally save the pelts for all kinds of uses. I have a F.G, and if course I'd NEVER eat him...but for many homesteaders & such, rabbits make an excellent protein source, and are very inexpensive to raise.

a) 1890's??? They exist since the 16th century. b) "no flemish rabbit breeder with selfrespect will ever breed one who bites"... seriously??? All rabbits can bite even the ones bred by breeder with self respect. Biting is NOT a question of ADN or personnality, not to mention the breeder himself. Rabbits bite when they are handeled inapropriately, when they are frustrated or angry for any reason, or when in mating season. c) That "semi arched spine" is a "conti" specification, not a flemish giant one. Yours has the typical rounded ears of a "conti". d) Rabbits generally hate to be petted on the head. It's a dominant behaviour. They love to be rubbed behind the ears and very softly along the ears. Just sayin'
