I just got through the Toon/Oakley segment. Nathan, I have a question.. if "Earth is measured flat..", then why do surveyor measuring tapes ROLL UP? Why do they lay on the irregular ground when unrolled? When I bought a piece of land last year, my county demanded a new boundary survey. The parcel of earth was measured out POINT TO POINT. The contour of Earth between the points is irrelevant. But.. the surveyors did not use a sextant to measure. SEXTANTS DO NOT MEASURE EARTH. You can not win or discredit Toon's sextant challenge, with a specious claim about how you say "Earth is measured", because sextants do not measure Earth, they LOCATE POINTS. It's actually the rather miraculous thing about sextants, that they can identify the location of a random point on Earth without any measurement of any linear distance to any other point on Earth.
