Flesh Eating Bacteria that is killing more people

We live in Western Australia and my 78 year old dad has just survived this horrible horrible bug, his wounds are still healing now. We don't know if it started from a missed kangaroo tick or maybe a whitetail spider bite after going into the bush to get firewood. He was in hospital for nearly 4 months and had to have multiple surgeries on his thigh, up into his groin and up on to his stomach. We had to go and say our goodbyes to him twice because the doctors just didn't know which way it was going to go but luckily for us, and my dad, he came through it. He's lost a lot of weight and muscle but he's slowly building back up. I think along with the surgeons and the doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and anybody else I've forgotten his strong will to live (and come home to his dog Mavis and the rest of the family) had a lot to do with his survival, which all the doctors are totally stunned with. My dad is a returned serviceman and has lived a very hardworking life and doesn't give anything up without a fight. I thank everyone that helped him and God for letting us keep him.

Tropical beach areas are the best place to get it. I lived on Maui, got bit by a spider, and within days it exponentially got worse. Thought it was eating through my stomach. Many antibiotics to get beyond. Years later,behind.wicked itchy up my arms, and I'm not the only one that says this...like something lingered behind.

Doctor Hansen, your advice is worth a million. I am a survivor from a rogue bacteria where I almost lost my arm and probably my life were it not for the last anti-biotic in the hospital. Still, I had to have 4 operations to get new skin on the huge patch of skin I lost from the infection. It must have looked horrible because when the nurses undid the bandages in the first few days they literally screamed for the doctor to come look at my arm. One nurse begged me to look at my arm and for some reason I refused to see it all infected and instead I visualized my arm looking normal. I used visulation to get my arm back to normal. All I know is that an infection is something that is very difficult to defeat in these times.

Thanks for mentioning Hemochromatosis. A lot of, especially men, do not realize they even have this genetic disorder. Also, I would caution women not to shave anything prior to exposing themselves in the ocean waters because the break in the skin does not have to be a gaping wound. God bless all and be safe.

In the late 90s, I lived in San Francisco. My girlfriend worked with a girl who was part of a communal household, all young lesbian girls who were IV drug users. Over the course of a few days, they were all admitted to the hospital with an aggressive rogue bacterial infection which basically dissolved them in under 48 hours. This fatal condition had never been seen, and a square area was quarantined while men in Hazmat suits investigated.. It was concluded that the source of the bacteria was a rooster one of the girls had found in the Mission district, and brought home as a pet. The matter was virtually unreported and little information is available. I can only wonder how many such incidents are occurring and never made public.

I had a situation where the front of my face from my eyes down began swelling pretty bad. Along with it a bad headache, that kept getting worse as the swelling got worse. Within an hour or two of it starting my face had swelled to the point my eyes were starting to shut and I had a migraine headache. I drove myself to the hospital and got there just in time they said. They immediately rushed me into surgery and they had to cut into my face from the inside of my upper lip, where my lip and gums meet. They extracted a huge mass of something that was forming inside my nasal cavity area. I had to have plastic surgery to fix my face afterwards. They never found out exactly what it was, or how I got it, but they did tell me it was some kind of infection. Apparently I would have died from it if I didn't get to the hospital when I did. They kept me in the hospital for days after the surgery because something wasn't right with my white blood cells or something. It was a scary experience. It all happened so fast. One minute I was fine. The next minute my face is starting to swell. The next minute I'm being rushed into surgery, on the brink of death.

I had to have surgery for a flesh eating bacteria 4 years ago(2019). I am agoraphobic and haven't been swiming in at least 2 decades so they couldn't figure out how I got exposed. They cut out over a pound of flesh from the back of my leg. It took about 8 months to heal. This is a saltwater bacteria. Tilapia is freshwater. It can not be from tilapia unless there was cross contamination in food handling along the delivery.

I contracted Necrotizing Fascïtis back in summer of 2009 and it was by far the most HORRIBLE thing I have ever endured. It started at the left corner of my mouth and worked it's way across my lips and then down my chin and neck. I had no idea what it was and because of this, I ended up with it spreading to my chest and upper arms. I was already in the hospital when I contracted it and it turns out that the day nurse had been tending to another patient who had it before me and that nurse apparently didn't wash well enough after working with that patient and then came into my room right after being in their room. Because of it starting at the corner of my mouth, it was surmised that the nurse touched something that, of course, touched my mouth and then it entered the skin of my lip through a pore or hair follicle. It ate a hole all the way through my lip to the point where my teeth were visible through my lip. It was the most painful thing I've ever had until I had five hernias repaired. Once the Necrotizing Fascïtis spread to the rest of my body, including down to my toes, I was absolutely ready to give up and expire. I just wanted someone to unplug me. It destroyed me mentally, emotionally, and physically for over two years when I finally healed up from the last of it. I still have some VERY nasty scars from it and the effect it had on my joints, especially my hip and knee joints, is still very evident. So I have terrible joint pain because of the lasting effects of it. I thought that once it healed up that I would be completely back to normal, but its effects are still with me at least in that way. I had Pemphigus Vulgaris before I contracted it, so this disease is thought to be one of the factors in why it ended up being able to enter my body so easily and wreak havoc. Pemphigus is bad enough all by itself and I had just come out of a very bad flare of it just a few months before contracting NF. Thank you, Dr. Hansen, for doing a video that focuses on this infectious disease because I never see it discussed on the internet. So I'm very happy that you chose to do this video. It is much appreciated.

My nephew, he is 20, just got out of the hospital. He had this in his throat and chest. He has had 6 or so surgeries. Doctors said his was caused by bad teeth. He got to the hospital just in time. We live on the Gulf coast in Alabama. My Mom put alcohol on her hands after fishing. Then washed with soap.

My dad contracted necrotic fasciitis back in march two days after receiving his first chemo treatment for colon cancer. It was the most horrifying experience watching him go through that. The VA refused to give him antibiotics because his cancer had progressed too far. They said he was going to die anyway. They withheld pain medication until till he begged to die and they obliged. A fatal dose of fentanyl and morphine.

I'm sure there are precautions you could take like not going in if you have open wounds, take hand sanitizer along with sunscreen, etc. I can't believe that the risk of this to any individual is particularly high...I mean everyone knows that cancer feeds on sugar (or white bread, rice, etc) and has a significant negative effect on health but I know many friends with cancer who can't give up their Thomas's English muffin with Smuckers in the morning...Eating a crappy diet, not getting enough vitamin D, being super stressed and anxious...these are way more likely to kill a person than your glorious days of summer bobbing around in the waves. I get what he's saying and it is a valid concern to become aware of the dangers lurking...but the odds are in your favor as a survivor already so maybe don't slurp down a dozen shady oysters in August but enjoy your life without fear. This has been in Australia for years. I am a retired registered nurse and once worked in theatre we're we operated on a gentleman having to cut further into his body trying to get infront of the germ. They were not 100% sure at the time what the course was, but I do remember them saying they thought it might be a white spider but they were not sure. Even though I say it has been around for years I also must say I didn't see this often so it's not something that's increasing in numbers that I know about. I hope that one day soon they will find a way of killing this bug quickly, without the need to operate on these people as its a long way to recovery.

I think men are more likely to participate in behavior that exposes you to this stuff. For example, when we go wakeboarding (in warm saltwater near oyster bars), there are more guys than girls and the guys spend more time in the water. Also many more guys are fishing in these waters than girls.

A week or so ago a man died after eating raw oysters here in Galveston County. 1. August doesn’t have an “R” in it, so not a good moth for raw oysters for sure. 2. He was in his 50s and his health wasn’t good - diabetes I think. 3. Officials are thinking they can track the geographic source from the lot tag on the oyster bag. 4. There was already a PSA warning of Vibrio also no the coast. Personally I don’t see the charm of raw oysters, myself!

I have never understood the appeal of eating something that cleans the sea. I also don't get why people would eat raw fish. Years ago, I worked with a man who'd had NF. On one of his thighs, he'd had to have the flesh removed to the size of an A4 piece of paper, and they'd taken the bulk of the flesh down to the bone. He was one of the most positive people I'd ever met. He said that he'd looked Death in the face and he decided that, if he survived, he'd put all of his effort into being happy and loving his family.

This is horrible but I live in eastern (southern) nc and we had a very mild summer actually. I think the highest temp this summer was 96 degrees but it didn’t stay that hot (like a few days here and there all summer). My area normal temps in the summer are anywhere from 88-98. It was a very mild summer… that’s why he haven’t had a serious hurricane in several years. Maybe why I haven’t heard about outbreaks of this disease in any of the counties I travel to (I work for DHHS). Thank God I haven’t heard about it!

Those who are interested in this subject, please investigate an apparatus called a "zapper'. They cost from $26 to $300. depending on frequencies and functions. I have both a cheap one and an expensive one. I use a zapper frequently, especially for any inflamation or headache.😅
