FLETC Talks
In 1983, the United States Supreme Court decided the case of Michigan v. Long, which extended Terry searches to a vehicle’s passenger compartment, if a police officer has sufficient facts to reasonably believe a suspect is dangerous and may gain immediate control of weapons. The search of the vehicle is limited to those areas in which a weapon may be placed or hidden. If, during the course of the search, the officer finds contraband other than weapons, the contraband may be seized.
