Episode 36
We had a very hard time finding a farrier in the Amarillo area to work on our draft horses that were rescued from a livestock yard back in February 2022. Before all the horses arrived at the farm they were still at the livestock yard where a farrier did a hoof trim on the original 6 horses.
When we finally found a farrier to work on the draft horses, they were all overdue for a trim. Most of the horses had a lot of overgrowth and some had cracks.
This was our first experience getting the horses into the horse stock and seeing what happens during farrier service. This was defiantly a challenging situation because the horses were stubborn and didn't want to yield their feet. With them also being senior horses it was difficult for them to stand on 3 legs for an extended period of time due to arthritis.
HUGE thank you to Kimi Posey for taking on our draft horses! We can't thank you enough!
Subscribe to our channel so you don't miss anything happening here around the farm!
Thank you for watching!
If anyone is looking for a phenomenal farrier in the Amarillo area, contact Kimi! She does travel to surrounding areas as well!

It’s so wonderful to see the progress you’ve done, once the farrier is finished regular check up’s will keep the hoofs in good condition. I commend the farrier p, she was very patient, did a great job, luckily the horses didn’t need shoe’s. Looking forward to watching the rest of your videos and the future ones. 🐾🌻🐾

Miss Anna might need a little SynChill. It's so good to drop the stress and discomfort. Easier than a needle too. Since you don't have a steel I beam over head, you might consider long-term setting some steel with a cross beam for strapping to take weight and help balance a bit. Bovine crush manufacturer makes some nice ones and your vet could provide guidance. I'm so glad you found a farrier. Drafts are a special breed. Hope you checked in with vet about abscess starting. A pad or boot helps but often a daily treatment. I'm sure you have faced the challenge before. Appreciate you sharing

Another channel that I watch, makes smoothies out of apples, watermelon etc and puts it in a synchill type syringe and gives as a reward to their horses for being good at grooming. It gets the horses used to taking medicine by mouth and saves money on syringes because they can wash them and reuse them. Synchill is a great relaxer! It has been so much fun watching all of your horses personalities emerge. Anna acts like she feels so much better!!! I used to have a horse whose legs swelled up terribly but when I put him out in the pasture- his legs went back to normal. You are lucky to have such a great vet and farrier. Thanks for your hard work!

I've seen the stock used on different KZbin channels but they mostly don't show the struggles to raise and strap the hooves. One video showed an English ferrier using a stock that had pullies to help raise heavy reluctant feet. I haven't located it again yet ... I'll pass it on if I find it. It looked cool and easy on everyone.

You have found a wonderful farrier..may I say something please..before I learned how to trim my own horses hooves I used a farrier..I treated him like gold because he was working with a back injury caused by his work..I always made sure to have his favorite drinks (nonalcoholic of course)..and water..a snack of some sort ..all these made him take very short necessary breaks..the other thing ..I kept a shovel and wheelbarrow handy so I could scoop up any droppings..these little things made sure that even in an emergency he would always make room for me in his schedule..i am so gratefulyou have openedyour home to these giants..they deserve to be loved and pampered..as always prayers and blessings to all

Glad to see you found a great farrier that works on drafts, lot's of the farriers I see daily and weekly at the farrier/tack shop I work at don't like working on them. They are gentle giants but can be stubborn even in the shoeing stocks. Have Kimi keep them on a regular schedule for trimming. So glad you are giving as many as you can a chance to enjoy some much earned retirement. Keep up the great work and look forward to the next video.

It has been many years since around horses, this video is wonderful. I think many folks do not know that a farrier is both engineer and artist and that horses can have horrific pain, crippling, and go down from lack of hoof care. I think of all the ladies who spend a fortune on shoes yet never have a professional pedicurist care for their feet until a problem arises.

22:28 it would really help if the horses could develop a memory of favorable experience by putting them in the stocks for regular handling, brushing, hoof cleaning, training them to lift their feet, etc., using treats for positive reinforcement. This way they'll be easier to handle if an emergency arises or for just upkeep.

Are you familiar with Monty Roberts, the horse whisperer? You might check out his channel for tips on getting recalcitrant horses to let you work on their hooves. I saw a video recently about that very thing, but I can't remember who made it. But I kept thinking a couple of your horses are not going to want their feet trimmed in the future, esp if they get scared. There aree definitely tricks of the trade out there. If I come across that video again I'll link it.

We have a guy in the UK who uses a lick bar for the horse to take the attention from what the farrier is doing. He does this to train horses who do not like having their legs lifted. It works. It might make their experience a happier one

Do you clean (pick) their hooves regularly? That is really important to keep their hooves in good condition & to keep you apprised of any issues that could be developing. Vetracyn is a good product to keep on hand or check to see what your vet recommends.
