WE DID IT AGAIN! Another rescue! Three more Belgian Draft horses arrive at the farm! Ep. 80

Back about 2 months ago, I had a lady reach out to me from Weatherford, Texas because she needed to re-home her two Belgian Draft horses. Zeus and Hercules were previously used to pull farm equipment and carriages on an Amish Farm. They were partners in a working team and to this day still move in unison. They are a bonded pair and needed to be re-homed together. They were rescued from Bowie Texas Livestock originally about a year and a half ago. I agreed to help her try and find a home for the horses as she was having a hard time finding a rescue group to help or even take her calls. I thought I found a family to adopt these two beautiful geldings but at the last minute the home we had planned didn't work out and we were at square one looking for a place for these boys to go. After telling Cory what had happened with the family not working out we decided to give them a home here at Fletcher Farms Amarillo and the Big Hoof Foundation.
During that same week that we agreed to take the boys, Jessica from Bowie Texas Livestock reached out to me because another rescue group had paid the bail for a Belgian Draft Horse but they were in need of finding a home for her. When I told Cory about this sweet girl with some medical conditions, he agreed to pick her up when he was going to get the boys from Weatherford.
And that is how we ended up with another three horses here on the farm! This video is all the details about the three horses we brought to the farm and how they are doing now. We were not expecting the mare to be in the condition she was in! We are doing one last fundraiser for the end of the year to help cover the medical bills for the new rescued mare. Also, an update on everything else happening here on the farm.

I know how stressful rescue work is and also emotionally draining because of all the abuse and misery you get to witness. I did dog rescue for years and was involved in many rescues, I also fostered, it wasn’t equine rescue but non the less it takes its toll on the rescuers no matter what animal it is. I also know how expensive rescue work can be because of surgeries, general vet care, vaccinations, food and other supplies that are needed on a regular basis, I no longer do rescue work due to my age but I do support the Big Hoof Foundation whenever I can on a fixed income. Horses are my first love before before any other animal, I have loved them as far back as I can remember and they have a very special place in my heart, I so miss being around them, smelling their scent, being able to touch their velvety soft noses and hearing their whinnies, so I get my “fix” by watching videos on channels like this one. I love all animals and none of them deserve to be mistreated or abused and it absolutely breaks my heart knowing what is being done to our horse population in America! Granted we no longer allow horse slaughter, however we do allow for those majestic creatures to be send off to Mexico and Canada for slaughter for dog food and to land on someone’s dinner table which is disgusting and I find it atrocious that our government is even allowing that!

OMG!! ZEUS! So cute taking a snooze and all his adorable grunting and groaning. He looks super happy! And poor Aurora and her issues, she's been through a lot clearly but has found a little slice of heaven now. Once she puts on a few hundred pounds she will feel and look even better! I hope that wound on her leg clears up and she's not as stocked up on that leg. Once that wound is better it will be easier. We used to run the hose on the swollen leg a few times a day and keep it wrapped at night and hand walking and gentle massage really helps. Though I noticed the older drafts tend to get stocked up in the hind end. You guys are truly heroes!! Sending you and all your giant fur babies much love and snuggles!! Bless you for all you do!

I hope Aurora the Belgian mare can be helped, she is very ballooned up on her rear leg, along with that eye issue. Merry Christmas to you all.. Yes draft horses eat a lot and getting 22 horses hoof care every 6 to 8 weeks is expensive I know up here in Vermont its 50 to 75 for a trim, getting shoes puts it at the 150 or more mark.

You should network with Horse Plus Humane Society and transfer some of your Drafts ? You will get compassion fatigue if you don't adopt some out so you can rescue more.

Do you have a video explaining your philosophy regarding buying from a kill pen, where the money goes directly into buying more horses for slaughter, giving them a profit, and maybe they specifically buy a few particular horses to sell for a profit to the public?

Our philosophy is about saving lives! I know I can't save every horse but there are so many rescue groups trying to help! Whether I buy these horses or they ship to slaughter the livestock yard gets the same amount of money. The bail price is the same amount the slaughter houses will give them for the horse. It goes by weight. People need to stop bringing their horses to livestock yards. The issue is no different than dropping a dog or cat off at the shelter. Over breeding! If you can no longer care for a horse or a pet reach out to rescue groups to help find them homes. Until something changes in the US and horses are not allowed to ship out of the country for slaughter this problem will continue. I encourage everyone to reach out to your congress people and urge them to pass the SAFE Act to end the shipment of horses out of the country. The Safe act will also change the way livestock yards handle horse!

So happy to see a video of the horses. I completely understand why you have posted a video for a while. I just go and rewatch other videos. Liam is just a big baby. Thank you so much for this wonderful update and rescuing another 3 gentle giants..although Hercules and Zeus were in great condition because they had been in rescue for a year..my goodness they are SO bonded..Zeus upset when Hercules taken off the trailer!! And people say they don't have emotions..they're full of 💩..sorry it just makes me so mad..as does the guy riding Aurora at Bowie Livestock..he KNEW about her leg AND her eyes..GRRR🤬🤬.. why ride a horse that is SO underweight and has a leg injury..fgs..he was a big guy..ok if it was Zeus or Hercules..big fully fit drafts..but she was NOT well.. I'd just get so angry I'd have to say something..l know you can't because you need a working relationship with them to be able to rescue them but boy..I'm not a lady that swears..but that would make me !! So pleased she is doing much better..Liam..my ❤ horse..oh my..laying down getting his feet done was hilarious..he just loves it😂...and yes he looked just like a big ole Teddy Bear 🧸.. glad Noah got his feet done..your farrier is a trooper..its a hard job to begin with but the size of those hooves are mega..just a silly question..who has the biggest hooves ?.. would it naturally be the bigger horse like Hercules or MY Liam?😂.. I'm a bit tight for money at the moment with Christmas here but l promise in the new year l will make another donation..the exchange rate is pretty good with 🇬🇧 UK at the moment so that helps a lot..wishing you all a very Happy Christmas and New Year. Multiple tries to get subscribed. KZbin makes it extremely difficult to get subscribed, and then frequently dropped from subscription. Just so frustrating. Anyway, I donated, and like another person said, if everyone donated just $5 this would cover their needs. Saving these draft horses is the best thing for your soul. They work HARD all their lives and get sent to Canada or Mexico for slaughter. Mexico slaughterhouses are the worst because they are put in a tight space and then stabbed with a knife in their backs until they collapse (still alive but paralyzed). Then they are butchered while alive but unable to fight back because they are paralyzed. It's not just a killing...it is torture with a slow death. This horse sanctuary gives the horses personal care and TLC. They are the kind of young people that anyone can love. They are the best kind of humans!!!
