Episode 72
Most all weeks on the farm with our Rescued Belgian Draft Horses are amazing and these horses teach us something new everyday. Such as how to love, trust, respect others in the herd and how to forgive other for actions of the past.
However, this past week was absolutely devastating. If you follow us on Facebook or Instagram you will have already seen the post that Paisley passed away in her sleep on Saturday August 26, 2023. We went out to the barn to feed everyone breakfast and found her in one of the runs. From our security camera she passed peacefully between 7am and 9am. We were completely shocked and devastated by the loss. Paisley was a sweet old girl and will be missed dearly.
Again on Tuesday August 29th we had another horrible day as we had to rush a horse to the vet for colic. Colic is a term used to describe a symptom of abdominal (belly) pain, which in horses is usually caused by problems in the gastrointestinal tract. There are over 70 different types of intestinal problems that cause colic symptoms, which range from mild to severe (life-threatening) in nature. Because colic is often unpredictable and frequently unpreventable, it’s a common concern for horse owners.
The horses taught us something again...you should always live in the moment and regret nothing! Love unconditionally! Tell the ones you love what they mean to you! Don't neglect the ones that love you! Never give up! Never pass up a chance to say I love you because tomorrow is never guaranteed or promised.
“Tomorrow is not promised to us. Start dancing in the rain and look for your rainbow through the storm clouds. Once you find it, don’t ever let it go.” - Amelia Hutchins

Paisley passed away in the kindest, gentlest, most natural way possible. Please try to celebrate that. We all have to go sometime and every horse should be so lucky as beautiful Paisley. You saved her from a nightmare destiny of being loaded in a truck headed to the horrors of the slaughterhouse. I feel for your suffering. You are doing God's work and need to protect your own heart. You and your husband are anointed and very very special. I will continue to donate when able. God Bless.

Finn has had such a great time with you and there was no way anyone could know what was happening inside him, thank you so much for giving him such complete care at the end of his life. I don't know how anyone with a tender heart toward animals can ever toughen themselves enough to bear losses such as you and your husband have had to bear. All you can do is to look at the beautiful results you have had with all the horses that you have rescued and also look back at the good lives you made possible for Paisley and Finn until they passed due to issues over which you had no control. Look at all the horses grazing behind you in your video and remember the effort and sacrifice that you put forth for each and every one of them. I'm convinced that Noah knew you needed a horse-hug when he approached you and he and the rest of the herd are living their best lives in their retirement years because of you and all those who help you make these rescues possible. Just watch a video of what happens to horses in slaughter houses and you will once again put on the full armor of the warrior rescuer in your heart and mind again! Never forget, you've saved these animals from a horrible end! Paisley and Finn and all of your herd all had saviors: You and Cory and all who are a part of Fletcher Farms Amarillo and The Big Hoof Foundation!

You rescued her, comforted her, and gave her love and peace for her last days. It's always hard, no matter how much you think you're prepared. She had a hard life till she got to you. Colic is one of the deepest fears of horse lovers and owners, second only to fractures. It's awful. I'm so sorry you had such an awful week. Take care of yourself. You gave them love and safety.

Thank you for the kind words and support during this difficult time! Colic is horrible and just comes out of nowhere. I do know one thing...with these older horses I don't think we will ever put them through another surgery. We should have brought Finn back to the farm where he was comfortable. We would have had him put down here. We didn't get a chance to say goodbye.

@@FletcherFarmsAmarillo You know, hindsight is 20. Colic is a nightmare but you had no way of knowing precisely how bad it was. I'm so glad there are mobile vets around here, because my poor old kitty had a stroke one night and died in my arms. She crawled down the stairs. It was awful. I had painkillers left over from another kitty who died of cancer far too young. I'd hope your vet keeps you stocked with various meds for the horses, given their age. I blanched when I saw the necrotic section of intestine. Prey animals are very good at hiding pain and illness. Colic in a horse is a horrible, sudden thing. I'm so sorry, again. It never gets easier, even if you think you're prepared for it.

A GSD I adopted years ago had been horribly abused. He had a scar on his muzzle from being hog tied with piano wire and had numerous broken toes from trying to escape. The story was his owners threw him in the backyard to die and left to return to the country they came from. Possible, maybe even probable but someone who does boots on the ground rescue told me it was far more likely he was hanging in LA's meat market. I took Hans because he was old and scarred and those dogs don't get adopted. He was one of the sweetest Shepherds I have ever known. I connected with a vet to give him acupuncture and wisely she said to me " You have to understand that sometimes the outcome is different from what you are expecting. She had found with these sweet souls when given safety , peace and as much freedom from pain as we could that the peace and safety comforted them enough that they could finally let go. Hard on the humans but what an incredible gift to the animal. Rip Paisley what a beautiful lady you were and Finn, the handsome ladies man.I smiled watching him snooze all the girls. I think he thought he was already in heaven. I am so glad you. both found Julie and Corey , their love and caring. Special people for very special horses. An old time Shepherd person once said " When I die they will find that my heart is like an old crazed China plate. Each line is for an animal loved and cherished and lost." Thank you Julie and Corey you have the very best kind of heart.

When I saw the title of this episode my immediate thought was, oh no, something has happened to Lliam. I know what you are going through, but you need to console yourself in the knowledge that maybe for the first time these horses knew love and got the care that they should had received for their entire lives. In my sister's stable there is a tradition that when a horse passes on we take the name plate off their halter and frame it with a picture of them. These pictures hang in the stable as a tribute to them. Keep up the great work that you are doing.

It is always a hard thing when you lose one of your family, which these horses were because you have taken them into your heart and your family. You gave them a good life and love. I am so sorry for your loss. Let them live on in the others that are left, knowing that none of us live forever and we may lose others. That’s the price of loving. Being loved is the greatest gift is any of us will ever receive. You are loved. 🥰 Take comfort in that. 🙏🙏🙏🙏

Oh Julie and Cory, my heart is absolutely broken for you both. You must be absolutely devastated and I know, no words can take away that pain. I’m a terminal cancer patient and have lost many friends on my awful rollercoaster journey. This is something I have learned that helps: Close your eyes, both of you. Take a deep breath and place your hand on your heart and breathe gently, quietly. Feel your heart’s rhythm, really feel it. With every beat you feel, that’s your lost loved one’s footsteps, they are walking beside you, with you always. Every time you feel overwhelmed by sadness, loss, take that quiet moment to feel their footsteps in your heartbeat. They never left, they never will. Love always. Ann. Xxx

❤‍🩹Ann, you are the dreamcatcher! A friend's husband just passed from the "C" word and the roller coaster goes on and on. A family member is ill seriously, and I deal with it somehow. Your words will help me keep my loved one walking beside me all the time now, in appreciation. The world is upside down, but I have learned, grown and evolved, as they say. Thank you for sharing your journey. My older son always used to talk about the dreamcatcher ~~ it sounds like he was anticipating you.

@@dreamcatcher3861 You're living The Hero's Journey just like Yvonne ~~ so many cliffhangers and miracles. I would love to know what He was thinking when brought to a real home with plenty of friends who had gone thru the same neglect and abandonment. I feel they definately sense "been there" expression and can trust each other. Of course thanks to the whole Fletcher crew for bringing the trust, care, LOVE back into these voiceless souls. @@FletcherFarmsAmarillo Thank you for taking the time answering! Glad you understand and are prepared for what might come. I can only guess about the feelings of the people who prepared them for slaughter - possibly being aware of what else was ahead of them. Watching several farm channels on KZbin, I understand farmers who state „every animal on the farm has its purpose“ - some work, some leg eggs, produce milk and some for meat…. If their purpose is over, that’s when they are sent to slaughter. That’s how farming works. And in some cases, it prevents them from suffering. You do a great job and have a beautiful mind, but this should be in your mind, too!

I hope this will help ease your pain...& the fact that you did everything to ease their's, & make their last year a happy time, a safe time...God Bless, & Happy Trails to you, & your beloved lost loved ones...until you meet again. ..♡☆♡
