I bought my airplanes to fly. Granted this was a little more spent than I normally spend in a month or two but when people need help and you have the means to help them you go. God commanded us to Love Our Neighbors. This falls under Loving my neighbors. I feel blessed to have the ability and the means to do what I did so I feel it would have been wasted if I didn't go and help. It cost about $1300 in fuel one night in the hotel for $200. $1500 is a small price to pay to save dozens of lives. I'm all in.

Russ Keith here with Airplanes and Coffee. Operation Airdrop and Operation Helo did an amazing job setting up, funding and managing this base of operation at Hickory. What you all were able to accomplish was nothing short of extraordinary. Water, food, medications, generators and basic supplies as well as over 500 Starlink units to setup communications to the entire affected area was life saving. Not to mention the hundreds of people with medical issues that were transported off the mountains. You guys with Medic Corps were awesome. I’m the guy that flew all the insulin and medical supplies in from Statesville for 3 days in my C172. I averaged 6 hours a day flying time before heading back home to Texas. Thank you for what you did to help those in need. This is why pilots are my favorite people.

@@davidmaust1415 Hello! I’m’ a WNC native, and a 911 dispatcher of 21 years. The government has been able to help. FEMA had Verizon set temporary satellite towers that work with all carriers about 4 days in (around the same time that they worked out a contract with Starlink). As far as I know people in my county (and surrounding areas) are still operating off the satellite towers. Every county has different challenges due to damage to infrastructure, terrain, etc. They should still be putting more up in different counties. I don’t know how Starlink is going to work for some. It’s great for responders but as far as I know it’s operating under a 30 day free trial. I saw some people saying Starlink only has satellite towers up for T Mobile users right now. I guess they are putting up towers too but it seems subscription based. I don’t know the details yet. I am glad that more communities are getting service.
@pollysshore25393 ай бұрын
I haven’t looked at Verizon updates in awhile but I there were ongoing issues with stability during restoration. The sat towers are helping with that. I can and will geek out on updates involving utilities and infrastructure but I’ve been paying more attention to issues with drinking water of late. So many people have been working themselves to the bone. The amount of work they have been able to do in -2 weeks is far above expectations but there’s so much to do. Pipes for water systems in Asheville were broken in multiple places all over the mountains. Water treatment plants were obliterated. Power co transfer stations are gone. The land that poles stood on is gone. The linemen are humping up mountains with heavy lines on their backs. Our local first responders have gone non stop, day and night. Responders from all over NC and other countries were on the ground before the storm hit (as discussed in this video) in several counties. Linemen, utility providers and DOT personnel from all over the country were here to help, and keep coming in. The National Guard was here. FEMA was here. They still are. The scale of this is just massive. The seriously impacted areas are about the size of the state of Massachusetts, the terrain is rough in several areas and access is incredibly challenging.

This video was great. We got to ride along with you! That was hard to think you couldn't get to some of the people. What if the people you flew over were too weak to come out. It's been so many days now. The word help does need to some how be put on the ground. Rocks , trees, whatever.

I have that many Ham radio operators have been busy helping with communications . I don’t hear much about it on the mainstream news. Many hams have portable gear for situations like this.

HAMs are so old and still viable in emergency situations. My friend Lorrie is keeping her license updated here in Lake County, Calif.

My brother is a big ham operator. I wonder how well they would work in mountains?
@diannabrooks3 ай бұрын
@TexasPilot It might depend on where and how high your antenna is. My friend tests hers once a month. Her antenna is mounted on top of her house. She extends up her antenna to use her set. Were in Lake County, Calif. And she is about 100 feet up from Clear Lake level. Her system is not portable but very effective for emergencies.

Good to see the area from the air. It gives a better perspective to what happened. Thank you for helping out and posting this video. My heart and prayers go out to everyone affected by Helenne and Milton. I live in Bristol Virginia which is not far from W. North Carolina and E. Tennessee. We were lucky to not have quite as much rain as they had a little south of here.

I shudder to think how dire the situation would be if it wasn’t for heroic volunteers like yourself and Aerial Recovery and many more. Seeing your account and hearing Aerial Recovery’s account it seems like the government has totally botched the “official” response. Thank you.
@sorrel75543 ай бұрын
The government is doing a whole hell of a lot and it will never be enough on its own without the help of volunteers like this. Look at it this way: if a car flips on the highway in front of you, you can get there before an ambulance no matter how good or bad the ambulance may be.

A few years ago, I had the honor to help remote island people in the South Pacific after a cat 5 cyclone (hurricane). We were on a boat to reach our people. You two in the helicopter reminded me of that time. It was so humbling taking needed supplies to people who had waited for months with no help from the government or anyone else, left me speechless.

My roots are in Appalachia & I'm heartbroken i can't get there to help. Other than the Sam tribute video, this one made me well up. It is amazing that we, as neighbors, strangers, friends, and family can unite. This is so reminiscent of the days following 9-11. Living in Port Saint Lucie, FL, we saw around 20 tornadoes and Hurricane Milton yesterday. As a community, I know many neighbors have/had assisted with shutter installs, security of outdoor furnishings, and assisting with clean-up today. Thank you for sharing this up-close-on-the-scene insight.
