The translation is a little weird, Sasuke uses it to mean "closest friend", but it would be more accurate to say that "to awaken the mangekyou sharingan, you have to kill someone you love." This can be familial love like a sibling or parent you are very close with, platonic love like a close friend, or romantic love like a spouse, partner, lover, etc.

I definitely got that from the translation. Understanding how Japanese people are with emotions and things like love or close friendships, this came across very clear to me and it was really heartbreaking for me.. this whole battle destroyed me 🥺

Sasuke just doesn't have a choice to move on and live like nothing happened when his powerful psychopathic brother is always around. Who can easily take away any new family or Sasuke's life whenever he wants. Sasuke's put in a position he doesn't want to be in, he only lives as long as his brother lets him.

Conversation between Sasuke , Itachi and Sasuke , Naruto are kinda important for the perspective characters. Naruto wanna save his friend from devil Whereas Sasuke 's priority from day 1 was to avenge his clan and restore the honour by killing Itachi . I personally don't want Sasuke to leave because Naruto Sasuke duo is my favourite.

I've probably seen that scene of Sasuke going back to the Uchiha district a 100 times by now and it still makes me cry everytime i see it, it's just impossible not to feel bad about Sasuke. Imo he has the most tragic backstory out of all of the cast including Shippuden

This and the next episodes hurt to watch the most. The Future taken away by family. The most pain imaginable happening at the age of 6. It would break everyone and I won't believe anyone saying they wouldn't get revenge. It isn't a choice Itachi is still out there. Sasuke didn't want to get close to anyone new, he didn't want any of them to get hurt. If he died just himself fighting Itachi the pain will end without regrets.

It's so awesome finally understanding everything that Sasuke has been through I really looks like Itachi is a very nice brother but clearly he had different ideas. And this Mangekyo Sharingan power is also very interesting. I wonder how much of Sasuke's behaviour right now is just how he has always felt or maybe the curse mark is making him feel a lot more evil. This whole fight is amazing so far

I wouldn't say evil he has to go cold. He has to get revenge and is the only one that can take down that mass murder that gives him constant pain. Any of his friends want to help they'll die only he can fight Itachi. Even if Sasuke loses and dies it will only be him and guilt free death. Cut ties no one will avenged his death. He's been alone since his family died he can't move on when someone like Itachi can come and murder his new friends n family. This revenge isn't for joy it's to end the huge danger always apart of his life. Then only can he move on. I can run my mouth a lot about this 😂

finally father moved on to Sasuke since Itachi became more of an issue :P the mother is really nice, her name is Mikoto, meaning precious and nobility, its used as a title for Japanese gods :) Fugaku acknowledging Sasuke was very nice to see :) their family dynamic was definitely problematic :D first time learning about the Mangekyo Sharingan thats dope, we saw Itachi using it with Tsukuyomi and Amaterasu but never got it pointed out, now its finally explained a bit :) that was quite a reveal, you gotta kill your best friend in order to gain the Mangekyo, now things make more sense :) this does make you feel bad for Sasuke thats for sure, great build up for this battle :)

its kinda funny, the show does an excelent job at deconstructing sasuke. because up to now, people saw him as this perfect prodigy, best in class, smartest guy. but he was one of the hardest workers. he trained hard, all the time. which is why he was so devastated when he saw how fast naruto grew to his level. it made all the time he spent training to exhaustion, seem meaningless. and contrary to what others thougth of him, he saw himself as a failure. this is why his decision makes sense.

Watching this all back with a more matured head that can actually see writing, it makes Sasuke telling Naruto to just turn around and forget pretty hard to watch. It's basically him begging for his friend to turn around so he DOESN'T have to kill him to get more power. Naruto's insistence has basically pushed him to say "fine, I have no choice and it'll benefit me so I'll do it".

You have such a bad translation, Sasuke's father doesn't say "That's my boy," he says "As expected from my son." This is a fundamentally different line, that changes the entire reading of what is going on here; one that makes it all fit more. "That's my boy" is a kind gentle loving way of expressing pride; but as you can see in scenes where Sasuke's father is talking about Itachi; he doesn't have a joyful, loving relationship with him. Ever since Itachi graduated the academy at 6 opened up the Sharingan at 8 in the middle of Shinobi war; Itachi is a boy that in order to defend himself from all the stuff he's seen and had to do, turned himself into the "perfect shinobi"; a could, ruthless, emotionless machine; which made him captain of the ANBU by 10. Which harkens back to the themes in this entire first part of Naruto; with Haku and Zabuza, with Gaara, even here with the Sound Four/Five and their opponents; Shinobi are supposed to be disposable tools with no emotions or ambitions for themselves; and Naruto and most of Konoha go against that notion. Father Uchiha is saying, "As expected from my son" because he's already distanced himself from Itachi, to shield his own emotions from the fact Itachi is emotionless, super prodigy he doesn't know how to reach or talk to, he's broken with him; saying something that can nominally be see as a compliment, but is in actuality a completely detached saying; cold, and uncaring. So, when Sasuke's father goes to take him to the pond to test his skill, he's not doing it because he wants a replacement Itachi, quite the contrary; this where he has accepted that Itachi is truly beyond reach, and the nightmare scenario is that Sasuke is just as much a super prodigy that will become emotionless shinoby and be detached himself; and thankfully unlike Itachi, Sasuke doesn't get it on the first try, he fails completely. Sasuke trains, on his own, and inside of just a week, masters the fire jutsu; and his father stands there in absolute horror in shock; Sasuke is also a prodigy, maybe not quite as great as Itachi, but he's definitely up there. Then he turns away defeated, and starts walking; somewhere he catches himself, and becomes determined Sasuke will not become like Itachi, he's going to train Sasuke, spend lots of time with him, speak with him, fill him with emotion and love so doesn't become like the emotionless, inhuman Itachi; and indeed will warn Sasuke not to follow his brother's path. But somewhere in the last horror stricken moments, the damage is already done; somewhere he detached himself from Sasuke as well; for he does not speak with love and pride and praise for his sone; he is no doubt doomed to fail, for he uses the same words of detachment: "As expected from my son." Sasuke is happy, he does not realize what happend, for to him "As expected from my son" is indeed, "That's my boy", but it absolutely is not, "That's my boy." Sasuke doesn't realize he succeeded in driving is father to detach himself from him; and so the tragedy is complete. And you never got to experience this tragedy in this, because of that crappy translation you've got.
