There are many variables that play a part in choosing the proper flexplate or flywheel combo. Things like camshaft, engine size, torque converter, transmission and the end use all play a part. Please give our tech department a call at 1-330-630-0240. Thanks for watching!

You use e coat because it's significantly cheaper, not because it offers superior anti corrosion performance. A zinc plated flex plate if properly baked out will perform identically in fatigue applications.

Good question, this is common misconception that painting an engine or transmission black will make it operate at higher temperatures. Black paint does absorb heat more than other colors but this is only true when the heat is being generated by direct sunlight. In area's where there is not sunlight like the engine compartment and under the vehicle this is not a factor.

@Summit Racing I am looking at possibly replacing my Flexplate. How much is it supposed to flex? I can bend it by prying lightly around the edge with a screw driver from the inspection cover area. i can also push it in with one finger. It appears to be much thinner than TCI brand flexwheels. it is also hitting the bolts around the crankshaft which leads me to believe it is cracked.
@SummitRacing8 жыл бұрын
+Jack Karie, Agreed, if you can push it with your finger, it is most likely cracked and in need of replacement.

I called your customer support number (as mentioned in one of your posts). I couldn't have spoken to a more rude person. The fellow on the phone was completely impatient to answer my question. My question never completely made it through without a specific answer before the phone call ended. However, I purchased another engine (I had a bad engine bearing) and the flexplate flexed just as much as the previous. This is on a 2004 Dodge Caravan 3.3L engine, not a race car by the way.

Flexplate on Jeep Cherokee makes occasional noise, does wheel alignment, larger tires or 2"-4" lift affect performance and/or create noise?
@SummitRacing8 жыл бұрын
+gladys knight, If you are certain that the flexplate is making noise. You should investigate further and replace if necessary. Could larger tires affect this? Yes! Those larger tires put more stress on the drivetrain as a whole.

@jeromeygreen47883 жыл бұрын

@bigchrisrogers3 жыл бұрын
Puzzled. If the amount of flexing is important, to take up axial movement in the crank and/or the torque converter, then surely a much thicker, machined flexplate will have a different amount of flexing and perhaps give durability problems elsewhere?
@SummitRacing3 жыл бұрын
The thicker flexplate with increased rigidity and durability is required for high-performance applications with increased rpm capability and higher stall converters and to meet SFI standards for safety rules. The machined flexplate is not for most stock to mild applications. There won't be any problems when you're using the correct flexplate for the proper application.
@mikemccarthy64078 жыл бұрын
Can you explain how a torque converter "grows" as RPM increases such that a flexplate needs to flex? I just don't get it.....how does increasing fluid pressure inside the torque converter make "flexing" necessary?
@SummitRacing8 жыл бұрын
Hi Mike McCarthy, The Torque Converter body itself is not supposed to grow, but due to the transmission fluid pump pushing fluid into it (under pressure) and its internal operation with increasing engine speed (also creating pressure) propelling the vehicle, the converter must be allowed to float back and forth on the input shaft of the transmission. This is a minute distance but we must also consider some crankshaft endplay as well.

Thanks.....

So does the flexplate also work as a flywheel in the sense to keep the crank shaft's rotational inertia?
@Trident_Euclid6 жыл бұрын
The Litterbug Almost. Now it's mostly handled by the torque converter.
@1997LT1Camaro3 жыл бұрын
All rotating mass is to be considered when balancing. The flex plate is much thinner than a fly wheel, so sometimes they balance with weights on the torque converter.

How does it bend if there are bolts holding in place? Is that why they are breaking?
@dntlss Жыл бұрын
Actually run of the mill flexplates are relatively thin so they will flex some,more on the outside of the circumference than in the middle where they are bolted,think about it like a old trash can metal lid, bolt it in the middle but you can still move the outside metal around if you pull on it,i had one in a engine on one of my cars for 25 years, when i replaced the engine that flexplate was in excellent shape and it had been "flexing" all that time,guess if your not pounding on it all the time they will last a long time. I actually had a engine built and my builder sent me a scat flexplate like they show in the thumbnail for the video and i never liked it so i went with a OEM one , reason i didn't like it its because as a SFI aproved fleplate (high horsepower certification) it was made extremely thick, i dont think the Queen Mary sitting on it would have been able to bend it any so that right there didn't inspire much confidence and i had heard of broken teeth on these also so i just didn't use it.

@cheath87058 жыл бұрын
+Kumar Nainar You will need a flywheel not a flexplate. For some cars, there are options of going to different weight of flywheel. For example, 1995 Honda Civic with 1.5L engine and manual transmission, there is a 15lb (stock), 11lb, 7lb. 15lb is easier to take off from dead stop than the 7lb but the 7lb has much less inertia, allowing to speed up quicker. How much quicker, I don't know. I haven't tried it. That is what I recall when I was researching. I don't have the car anymore though.

@robbedoes198512 жыл бұрын
They paint engines and gearboxes black because it emits infra-red radiation energy better then other colors, also when it is matte or wrinkle finished, the emitting surface it bigger. A flywheel does not create heat so there is nothing to emit. Internal friction makes transmissions run hot.
