Thank you USPS for this "fly wheel" video. I thank you so much for those opening sentences. I start the car so very much. If a woman's place is in the home, why am I ALWAYS in the car???? I do so much in and out that it makes sense. When the starter grinds & whizzes and clears it's throat, I began to get nervous, because in this past month I did need to replace my battery. But now I know it's only like a $60 part, if warped, and I can trust my mechanic.

That being from an automatic truck, aren't those flywheels actually "flexplates"? Or is the term interchangable in the states? I ask because, in the UK, "flywheels" are heavier and to be used with manual transmissions, whereas "flexplates" are to be used with torque converters.

Ring gears are NOT welded on....and you can replace them very easily. You buy the ring gear seperately and you heat up the old one with a torch and knock it off. You let the flywheel cool off, you can even freeze it, although usually not necessary. Then you heat up the new ring gear until it expands and you tap it on the flywhere with a hammer. I remember having to replace one of those when I was in my teens. It was very easy to do and I had no problems with it ever since.

I wonder what all the welding marks are then? I sure see welding on the flywheels he is showing as well as all the flexplates in my garage

@@thatbiguy1975 LOL he didn't watch the video close enough to see it was not a flywheel, but a flexplate, it's no wonder he didn't see the welds. The mechanic misspoke by calling it a flywheel, but those of us who know the difference, knew what he was talking about.

Manual transmission = flywheel - autiomatic transmission = flex plate as any mechanic will tell you......

Primary problem with flexplate grinding teeth has more to do with the starter not being shimmed and spaced correctly, a slightly warped plate is going to have balance and cracking issues more than teeth ware.

Shimming a starter would typically make the grinding problem worse. It is common practice to shim the flywheel to bring it closer to the starter spur gear.

That method doesn't help determine which flywheel is warped or which ring gear was installed incorrectly. It has to be indicated against the crankshaft which is a known good part.

@den2003 Automatic transmissions have flexplates and standards have flywheels but guess when you call it a flywheel because either way it does the same thing. But yes your right.

On regular jeeps the engine stops in one of 3 places. So starter only contacts 3 spots on flywheel.

@volodymyrm1 Alot of mechanics call flexplates "fly wheels", they both have the same function the only real diffrence where/how there mounted, (dual mass flywheels are a exception)

i just took off new plate,matched it up like you just showed .the new one in places it out of line by 1/8 then it goes the other way.i turned it over original one stock lays 100% flat-new one you can rock back and forth takes several shims to get it to lay flat---thanks -i'll know next time

I have long time problem with starter grinding, it’s may be flywheel that have to be replace, you look very expert about this. Looking someone like you to do this kind of jobs. You have you Owen garage? I from ny, you have idea how much will be to replace flywheel for 2014 accord 3.5L?

Thanks you said it for me hate it when people think they are experts that don't know what they are even talking about ... when rebuilding a juice tranny always install a new flex plate.generation trans of St'Helens,Or. screwed me this way my flex plate cracked at the bolt holes .... screwed by Gannin Thomas

@dexter2433 Technically, it's called a flexplate on an auto transmission, not a flywheel. That is why I was confused. The title should be flexplate tip instead of flywheel tip.

It’s definitely warped. U can see it gets flush then it raises up. Throw it away. Get your money back.

The ring gear will be lined up with the bolting face, so turning it on its high spots on a table means nothing. Bolted up it probably runs true, he should have known that....

every ring gear i've ever seen is wobbly, high performance or stock... flywheels always seem straight though..
