The near future; humanity has been all but destroyed by a mutated fungal disease that eradicates free will and turns its victims into flesh-eating “hungries”. Only a small group of children seem immune to its effects.
At an army base in rural England, this group of unique children are being studied, subjected to cruel experiments by biologist Dr. Caldwell. Despite having been infected with the zombie pathogen that has decimated the world, these children retain normal thoughts and emotions. And while still being subject to the craving for human flesh that marks the disease these second-generation “hungries” are able to think and feel making them a vital resource in the search for a cure.
The children attend school lessons daily, guarded by the ever watchful Sergeant Parks. But one little girl, Melanie, stands out from the rest. Melanie is special. She excels in the classroom, is inquisitive, imaginative and loves her favourite teacher Miss Justineau.
When the base falls, Melanie escapes along with Miss Justineau, Sergeant Parks and Dr. Caldwell. Against the backdrop of a blighted Britain, Melanie must discover what she is and ultimately decide both her own future and that of the human race.

I read an article saying that "The Boy on the Bridge" story is similar to this movie with a young genius together with a motherly character. I think it is best to leave this movie as it is because any prequel/sequel can't top this one.

The thing that scares me the most is that they didn't make this thing up, the fungus is real and sometime in the future like everything it's gonna evolve and will learn to infect and spread through different species eventually to human beings and that is really frightening for me personally.

My dad "suggested" that the family watch this movie one night. I was in tears when the cat died. I'm very paranoid about the way animals are treated during movie productions, and my dad said to me, "Oh, well, in Britain, they love animals, so I'm sure the cat was okay. And look, she's rescuing a dog!" I looked up at the screen, and my brother corrected him, saying, "No, she's going to use the dog as bait." I walked out of the room at that moment.

Sennia Nanua's acting is superb, I got Eleven(Stranger Things - Millie Bobbie Brown) vibes from how cute and innocent she was from the beginning and later how open and intelligent she got. It's amazing how smart child/teen actors are to convince movie goers of their characters this well.

Kay Kad of the film? I've not seen it but I've read the book and basically, (spoilers) everyone from base has died save Justineau and Melanie. Melanie and her classmates were a high functional breed of hungry so they could learn like regular kids. They found a pack of untrained high functioning hungry kids and set up a makeshift school out in the post apocalyptic world. Basically, it went in a circle

When she burned the BT tower with all the spores, I get that it is a reference to how all the evil is released by Pandora but what I don't get is the "hope" because it basically ended the uninfected humans.

Grise Blacolar In the book, the "hope" aspect is explained pretty well by Melanie herself. She says something about how if the junkers and the military continue to fight, they'll only end up destroying each other, (or something like that. I'm not good with wording.) Melanie released the spores so the second generation sentient hungries would become the new race to rule over the Earth, and all of the fighting would stop.

Fantastic Cast. Sennia Nanua as Melanie was incredible. Paddy Considine as Sgt Eddie Parks had a great character arc. I ended up liking him. Glenn Close Glenn Close as Dr Caroline Caldwellwas fantastic. Gemma Arterton as Helen Justineau was marvelous.

I've just watched the film, and I actually loved it and I didn't see that kind of a film in a while. I was so into the film I couldn't watch away a second, and I felt as I was actually with them. Loved it. But I didn't get the ending. Can someone explain pls?

Virgiz Melanie learned everything she needed to learn from her teacher, and never came from a position of being a zombie or a monster. She was the next step in the evolution of human beings, and she felt they had as much right to exist as the humans did, and the humans wouldn't have all become hungries otherwise. So she gathers the other children around, acting like a feral and asserting dominance like an animal would, and then brought them to school to continue learning like she did. She is literally the girl with all the gifts. Pandora's box has been opened, and hell unleashed upon the earth. Every horrible thing was wrought upon humanity and all the punishments handed out. But in this world, she could walk around and no one tried to harm her - she was in harmony with nature except when she fed upon it, because she was now at the top of the food chain. The thing at the bottom of the box was hope, which from a human point of view was only to be had in Melanie's destruction by killing her and harvesting her brain to create a "cure" - without having any idea if it would even work or how many humans were left. But from Melanie's point of view, hope represented being able to make peace with the destruction and teach them to evolve as she has. She's as human as any of the actors in the movie, and the ending was - in my opinion - what set this movie apart from so many other films you could compare it to.

Jeremy Lapuz ok so.. the childern are the second generation, they were..in their mothers stomach during the outbreak ,since they werent directly infected the fungus wrapped inself around their brains allowing them to function . so basically the doctor is attempting to create a vaccine from them ,but an outbreak happens and they only manage to save melanie. i cant say anything else without spoiling the movie for you
