Its interesting I worked in Railway/Railroad operations in the UK and the US and its funny how another industries take is on hours of service. In the UK although it was a national railway(at the time)there was only one shift on the entire network that included overnight stays anywhere(we had a hard 12 hour rest in the UK, 8 in the US). In the US we did it more as the rule than the acceptation, even though it was a regional operator and smaller than BR in the UK. Your ODAN's sound very much like a split-shift. The hardest shift of me in the UK(I did the same shift for 10 years in the US!)was we would do a week of PMs and then a week of AMs so on "Saturday night" you would often finish at 2am Sunday morning, with Sunday "off" with a 4.30am start Monday morning, I found fitting 2 nights sleep into 26hrs imposable

Lord! It's daylight well past 7pm here so I guess your winter has truly started. I'm not looking forward to full summer (in Melbourne, the hottest time is usually towards the end of summer) I can't stand the heat, 35°C+ is bad, 40°C+ is where I wouldn't say no to a coma.. I'm not joking 😳
@Natalies_Page_Turners3 жыл бұрын
Oh goodness I was exhausted for you! I heard the shakiness in your voice when you got to your hotel. It sounds like it was just a very stressful day experience. I’m glad you made it through and made it back to DFW safely. And I hope that sleep was extra sweet once you got home. ❤️

It's so funny how weather is so relative to where you're from. It was real feel of 19 degrees here in Boston this morning and I only had a hoodie on. My car had been warming up prior and I immediately had to shut heat off and crack the windows. There were quite a few kids wearing shorts when I dropped my kids off at the high school. It's now real feel of 31 and I honestly feel warm. So 40 degrees in the winter for us is T shirt weather. However on the flip side we are weak babies to the heat. Once it hits 70, the ACs are running nonstop. A day in the high 80s and we are completely melting. We do get 90 degree days but it's like earth is on fire and everyone is complaining. I always say I'm not sure how ppl in Texas can handle that heat b/c one day I heard on the news something like "Texas is finally get relief from the heat wave . Temps will be cooler in the 88-91" If 88 is a cooler summer day, I'd be in trouble there.
@loretta_38433 жыл бұрын
Question! Because an ODANS is considered one duty day, do you get anything for meals as you would on a usual layover or I guess no because they say so? With my luck, if I had 5 extra minutes and sat down, I would have gone straight back to sleep!

Kat, love the videos. As a someone who works nights and swing shifts, usually in the same week the hack to short sleep intervals is to either sleep 20 minutes or multiples of 90 minutes so you wake up at the end of REM sleep and not in the middle of deep sleep. Hope this helps on your next ODAN!

@@KatNesbitt I was SHOCKED when I found out how senior the ODANS typically are. UA runs them from ORD-CHS a lot in the late fall early spring and I usually take the early flight out, so I see the after. :) I always board first and talk to the FA and the resounding response is “I can tuck my kids in to sleep and I often get home in time to see them before they go to school”. I had never thought of it that way - plus it is a ton of hours, so I can see the benefits - but there are drawbacks as well - you just have to power thru those. LOL
@kennethfeld66393 жыл бұрын
Hmm, now i watched the rest of the video and see you explained the kids thing….still kind of took me by surprise how popular those trips are among senior FA.
