If you research baggage requirements for US airlines (except budget airlines) they are close. More of a problem luggage manufacturers. A inch does matter it won’t fit in the luggage sizer. Even if it states TSA approved does it meet the airlines requirements. In 2006 my carryon was weighed and measured upon checkin at JFK airport for an international flight. It shocked me lucky I packed a small bag. I prefer to keep my luggage with me.

While this says 56 x 40 x 23 cm (which is 22 x 15.75 x 9 inches), I checked with several airlines that I will fly this year, and they say 56 x 36 x 23 (or 22 x 14 x 9 inches). So, you still need to check with your specific airline. I'm going to guess that no airline will allow one larger than the measurements given, but there are airlines that will require it to be even smaller than that.

The best best if possible is a soft carry on bag that'll fit under your seat. There's never any room in the over head anyway. Here in Europe they are saying the Universal IATA measurements are what they will enforce.
@ddc163264Ай бұрын
They must have a deal with the luggage makers! Also, this is just a money grab. I just put two people on a flight. one bag would've cost them $100 to check-in. We opened the bag, took out some items, moved it to another bag and the carry-ons,. The plane still had the SAME WEIGHT to carry, but had we not done this, the airline would've gouged them for $100! The airlines are now just looking to try and close any gaps to make up the fees that they lost in the latest FAA rulings. It's NOT about safety or comfort, it's just greed and avarice. The airlines made several BILLION in fees last year alone.

I remember the old days no: no carry-on luggage, check bags for free. Off & on the plane in five minutes! Airlines should be required to check two bags per ticket for free. Minimal charge for any additional. Airlines should also board passengers sensibly: start at the back and work forward. Deplane: start at the front and work backwards. Sick of phony-baloney, preferential treatments by the airlines and needy passengers who expect the same.

The IATA (the International Air Transport Association) sets recommended guidelines for bag size, and I can't find anything on their website about this. Also: adherence to their recommendations are purely voluntary so different airlines can and do set their own limits. As others have suggested, the best thing to do is check with your specific airline and if you are flying different airlines on the same trip, or your "United" flight is "operated by" another airline e.g. Lufthansa, check both airline websites. I checked United Airlines and found no information about a change in baggage size.

I have no loyalty to any specific airline and do carryon only. Check the airline’s site for luggage size it’s not hard these days. Three years ago flew European budget airline. Bought smaller carryon backpack and luggage scale then watched videos on how to pack efficiently. It’s time saving and less stress. Selected a backpack as we use public transportation and many of the airports we use don’t use jetways. Stairs are a nightmare to carry wheeled luggage up and down. Even when we have free checked bags we avoid it. The goal is to get out of the airport fast. It may not be for everyone but works for us.

If people don't like their fees then buy your wardrobe when you get there and donate everything on your way out - see how that compares to baggage fees. (We did that one time we went to Vegas. Even bought the luggage at Wal-Mart or something down there.) The one thing I appreciate is the standardization. I knew the limits were going to come when people started bringing bags that I use for 3 week holidays into the cabin so I was expecting it. It's just nice to have it right across the board. Look at the comments. It states "while this says 56 x 40 x 23 cm (which is 22 x 15.75 x 9 inches), I checked with several airlines that I will fly this year, and they say 56 x 36 x 23 (or 22 x 14 x 9 inches)".

So keep variation of different rules, different standards and haggle, hares and grift customers, clients and passengers and go to bank laughing. This is nothing but systematic oppression. People should demand universal standards and consistency in travel industry and wherever it is needed. We are not living life on whims of other people and not corporate princes.

US Americans need to catch up with the rest of the world and learn the metric system.
@daylightdaylight6612Ай бұрын
Also the UK should go to metric. A question: beside the miles is Australia not using the metric system for liquids and weight?
@sherimowery3251Ай бұрын
We learn the metric system in school. It just isn’t used in daily life for some reason.

Would you please give measurements in U.S. 'inches' for those of us who are older and this metric math does not compute in our brains. Thank you!

Carry-on bags should not be allowed in the cabin at all. Only personal items bags should be allowed. It's either that or all overhead compartments should be fitted with dividers so each seat has the same allotted space in the overhead compartment. The amount of crap people take with them on board the airplane is ridiculous.
