Miss Megan - I fly 3x year GEG > TPA to visit my daughter and her family. I've developed some "rules" making my flights more enjoyable and stress-free: 1) Because no GEG > TPA flights are non-stop, I never book flights with less than a 90 minute connection time. Stress reducer #1. 2) Because I don't mind turbulence, I usually sit in the aisle seat the second row in front of the rear galley restrooms. If flying Southwest, I check in early enough to get boarding group A or B, then head to the back of the plane quickly, because everyone and their brother wants to sit up front, so I often have no problems with overhead bin space (frequently sharing with the flight attendants!) or with grabbing the aisle seat opposite the sun. If on one of the other legacy carriers, I book that seat when purchasing my ticket, for the same reasons. (Also, in case of an emergency landing where the slides are required, I'm close to the galley service doors!) Stress reducer #2. 3) Seat swap requests are told it will cost them $250 CASH up front, it must be for an aisle seat, or it's no deal. That normally cancels the request immediately. But if they persist, then the price goes up $100 for each additional request. Stress Reducer #3. 4) Per the suggestion of several FAs and Pilots I've talked to while working at GEG, I spent the $$ to purchase the same rollaboard from Travel Pros that they use. Soft-sided, fits every airline's size policy, rugged construction, easily replaceable parts, everything I need fits - I can understand why it's the industry's favorite. I have a small backpack for my laptop, headphones, etc. that's my carry-on, never been challenged. (I think some gate agents think I'm crew deadheading!) Stress reducer #4. 5) Apple Air Tags. If the flight's full, I'm ok with Jetway checking my rollaboard. Since I sit in the rear of the plane, the rollaboard is often waiting for me in the Jetway as I deplane, and with the Air Tags, I'll have a good idea where it is if it isn't. Rarely have I had to do this, based on my normal seating plan. Stress reducer #5. 6) Thank you card for the flight crew. Handed to the lead flight attendant at the front door when boarding. Includes a hand-written thank you note plus a Starbucks gift card for each of the crew members, both flight deck and cabin. This small token of appreciation is often well taken and rewarded, thus worth the slight additional expense. Stress reducer #6. 7) Unruly children. Since I sit in the rear of the aircraft, this is rarely an issue. Crying babies are what noise-cancelling headphones are for. Kicking the back of my seat is one warning to the child, then one warning to the parent, then getting the FA's help. Stress reducer #7. Since I've implemented my seven internal rules, flying has become much more enjoyable and far less stressful. Do you do anything similar?

#1 is simply wrong. The overhead bin space is for everyone to use, not just the carry-on crowd. My bag is checked, I paid extra to do so, and I’m inconvenienced to go wait for it to finally show up at the claim area. But now people that didn’t want any of that think they have more of a right to the overhead space than my backpack filled with a 17” laptop and all the equipment needed for my mobile office, that I either may or may not need to access during the flight? No, you can just sit there and stew on your own ignorance. Not that I’m intending to be intentionally mean or nasty about it. Just that it’s neither my problem nor my attitude, but your own to deal with. Rather, I refuse to be bullied or guilt-shamed because you didn’t check your bag like I did. :shrug:

Yesterday, I flew for the first time in 2 years and looked forward to enjoy my first row seat. A man asked me to go in third row, saying "they” mixed up and talked about his son. @@TheBuzolich I've been asked 4 times in the last few years. One time in line for the bathroom, I was asked by a woman who wanted to move her old dad from the middle seat to my aisle seat while waiting for the bathroom. If I wanted to go to the bathroom in the next hour (I really needed to go) or not in a messed up bathroom, I ended up saying "yes" (it was a short flight and I actually didn't care, that much...SHE actually had the middle seat & took my aisle seat!). One female my age or less, wanted me to switch with her middle seat for my aisle seat right beside my 2 kids and husband...that was a no-brainer "no". Another one I absolutely refused to do was this 200+ lb grown man (I was in my late 20's/early 30's, female), who had made reservations late when there were only middle seats available for him and his wife on a particular flight...wouldn't wait until a later flight where he & his wife could have booked side-by-side seats with him in the aisle. He literally walked down the aisle seat and targeted people whom he viewed as female or vulnerable, stood over them, and harassed them to give their seat over to him. First he said that I had agreed to beforehand that he could have my seat (never met him before that flight and I reminded him everybody could hear our conversation). Then he said a "friend" of mine said that he could have my seat and I should talk to her on his phone (again, didn't know this guy, betting he got a female friend of HIS to fake being my friend for the rest of the airline passenger's sake...I refused his phone, since why would a friend of mine know this random guy's phone number). What's worse is he had a male buddy right behind me who complained who wanted me to answer HIS phone (again, I said "no", I don't know you) and then complained that I put my seat back, when I didn't...at all. Literally, the guy would NOT sit in his middle seat; I suggested getting the pilot involved or call the police to the attendant to make sure I really didn't want to give up my seat to this guy. I even heard one flight attendant say in a worrying tone "And they already have shut the doors" implying the flight would be delayed (which is what they should have done and arrested the guy). But of course, another female on the flight heard this and yelled "JUST GIVE HIM YOUR SEAT!!!!". At which I replied, "No, why don't you?" Then I heard some talking and moving of seats, mainly bc I don't think someone wanted the flight delayed. His wife was embarrassed and asked him if he was "done" and he said "not yet" in the middle of all this. I felt for him but the worse thing anyone could have done was give him their aisle seat bc the next time, he'll just do the same thing...book 2 middle seats for him and his wife, with the intention of harassing people to get his own way. That was a few years ago...I STILL remember that guy. smh

This "entitled" to 2 armrests is just BS. There's no reason people can't share. One elbow tight and the other one a little further out. There's no touching and it works fine. And if I'm on the aisle, the outer armrest is pretty much useless with people, most flight attendants, constantly bumping you even if you aren't over hanging into the aisle. If people can't be courteous and figure these things out without making up things like 'entitled', then they need to stay home.

I had this when I had been travelling for 24 hrs and a child (about 5, so able to be told) kept kicking my seat. I asked mum politely a couple of times to get him to stop, because I was really tired and had a terrible headache and wanted to sleep, then after half an hour on and off, the child ignoring the parent, and her not being arsed to follow up, I stood up, and said "bloody control your child now! This is not acceptable!" He'd also been running away from her in the aisle, in between kicking my seat and just about took out an elderly woman. I got a round of applause. A minute later, the flight attendant came over and asked me quite loudly if there was anything he could do to make up for my inconvenience and then said "ma'am, please control your child"- the woman sat there fuming, but did actually 'parent' after that. I don't mind if a kid is misbehaving and the parent is obviously trying their best, or a baby/toddler is crying (been there before!), but lazy parenting does my head in.

Since you mention small children, I'll share my favorite travel story. My wife and I were travelling to Hawaii for a convention and we were seated in the center section of a wide body jet. Beside me was a pretty little girl, maybe 4, and her mother. The little girl was on her way home from some beauty contest and cranky tired. She soon put her head in mother's lap and fell asleep...with her feet in my lap. I laughed off the mother's embarrassment and told her our son, who was staying with my parents, was about the same age and that it didn't bother me. We talked a little, which is how I found out about the beauty contest and I guess I told her about our convention. When we got to the hotel, the convention staff gave us a small suite on a higher floor instead of the room we had booked. It turns out that the mother was an executive at the hotel and she wanted to thank us for making her daughter more comfortable by making us more comfortable.

The number one reason why babies and little kids cry on airplanes is because their ears hurt around take off and landing. It's the change in air pressure. It hurts little ears. What I did for my kids: gave them gum or a snack to chew, or bottle to suck on, and gently rubbing around the ears helps, too. Also, you must bring quiet toys & activities that will keep them occupied.

What bothers me about being asked to change seats is that it is often a family who has booked four seats a few rows apart. Often they ask a flight attendant to broker the seat change, and the attendant can get loud when I decline. There are, after all, several other people that they might ask to change seats with.

In my opinion, the worst thing is parents that don’t control their children. Parents need to enforce common courtesy. I had a 16 hour flight from Europe with a toddler kicking the back of my seat the whole way, great fun. Even after I turned and asked the parents to do something. On another flight I had a young child with a drink and a straw spitting juice at me. I turned their parents and said “well what are you gonna do? “ Eventually I quietly leaned over and told the child, “ you do that again I am taking everything.” Children need to understand limits.

I had a 3 hour layover in San Francisco about 6 years ago. There was a younger mom with her (very loud) kid who was approximately 4 years old sitting in the same area as me. She was talking constantly on her phone as her undisciplined kid ran rampant through the adjacent gates seating areas and into some of the little stores nearby. She was one of those who talk really loud on her phone while carrying on long pointless conversations with a friend while being completely oblivious to how annoying she is to those around her. All the while, she was not the least bit concerned with where her very young kid had run off to. (Bad Mom Award)... SO anyway, we finally get to board the plane. She was one of those who were "traveling with small children" who get to board first. It was as if a peaceful calm descended on the gate after she disappeared down the jetway. Eventually I was allowed to board and as I came up to my assigned seat, I noticed that they were sitting right in front of me. Well, at least she will have to turn her phone off (airplane mode) and STFU, I thought to myself. Once we were airborne and the seatbelt sign came off, Her kid decided to stand on the seat facing backward. He had his chin resting on the top of the seat-back and just stared at my face non-stop. After a few minutes it started getting pretty annoying, but I figured he would eventually get bored and turn around. Nope. A few different times, I politely motioned for him to turn around, eventually giving him a grumpy look. No reaction whatsoever. After about half hour of this, I went back to the bathroom and got a piece of toilet paper soaking wet. Then I went back to my seat and got the fingers on my right hand dripping wet. I brought them up close to my face and faked a hard sneeze as I flicked the water in the kids face. He threw a bit of a tantrum. His mother turned around and glared at me. I smiled and said "Sorry... bad allergies". She finally made her Demon-Spawn turn back around for the rest of the flight. In retrospect, I realize that as annoying as the kid was, it ultimately was the result of a parent who is clueless or just doesn't care about how out of control their kid is. SHE is the one I was actually annoyed with. Unfortunately, these oblivious parents see nothing wrong with their lack of parenting skills... or are even aware of their ineptitude.

As a frequent long-haul flyer, a few comments: * I check my luggage and carry a backpack. If squeezed, the backpack could go under the seat. On a 9 hour flight, I want all the space to stretch my legs. My backpack goes in the overhead bin, no argument. You can sit on your obnoxious oversized wheelie for all I care. * Get over-the-ear high-quality sound-cancelling headphones. Parents do their best with their babies. Cut them some slack. * During meals, I tap the shoulder of the passenger in front and politely ask them to put their seat up while I eat. No one has ever refused. People are nice. It doesn't occur to them to move their seat. * Lastly, If you must move around the cabin while people are sleeping, to go to the lavatory for example, steady yourself by hanging onto the bars at the bottom of the overhead bins. Grabbing onto headrests as you walk by shakes the heads of the passengers. Be careful not to bump their knees or kick their feet if you can.

I hope you realize that some of these annoyances are caused by the steady decline in service by the airlines and additional charges for things that used to be free. For example, I recently encountered airlines that do not even at check in allow to choose a seat and it all costs now to choose at any time. That is new, but I expect that this will be everywhere soon as airlines squeeze out all the money they can get. Airlines cause annoyances to make people pay for avoiding them So one of my biggest annoyance is that people do not check in luggage anymore, but maximize carry on as much as they can. There might be some valid reasons for this, but I think the main reason for this trend is that check in luggage is an extra cost. One piece used to be included in every ticket, but since a while airlines incentivize to only have carry on and as a result the amount of stuff that people bring into the cabin is getting more and more. I usually check in my luggage and only have a midsized backpack that holds what I need on the plane and stuff that I cannot check in. I already paid a higher ticket price to have the majority of my stuff in checked luggage. Why should I be punished for actually checking in my suitcase by not having access to overhead storage just because my carry on happens to be a backpack. And as a result, massively reduced space in my legroom. To be clear, the backpack is bigger than a personal items back. This is my carry on and I expect to have the same right to space than everybody else.
@pipmitchell7059

Same! My carryon is a backpack (in addition to my purse), and twice recently attendants have tried to force me to keep it under the seat in front of me. In addition to all the reasons you list as to why I am entitled to space in in the bin, trying to cram both backpack and purse under the seat doesn't fit and leaves no room for my feet, and also risks damaging my purse. Being penalised this way for having checked my suitcase is maddeningly unfair.

If I really don’t want to pay to check a bag, I put everything into my carry-on that reasonably fits (especially if it’s a short trip or I know I’ll have a laundry available), and will courtesy gate check as soon as I get to the gate. I just ask the gate agent if I can and they are usually happy to let me. Then they don’t need to ask as many people to gate check on those really full flights. Sure, I still have to go to the carousel to pick it up, but that doesn’t usually bother me.

I am also questioning the comment about putting your bag behind your legs when you reach cruising altitude - with the increase in the amount of clear air turbulence situations, surely people shouldn't be encouraged to put bags the size shown in the video where they can become a hazard in the event of extreme turbulence? 😕

If everyone obeyed the rules, most people could use the overhead bins. That is why passengers are asked not to put items that aren’t their carry-on bag in the overhead bins. I’ve traveled short and long flights and was able to arrange my coat/ jacket in a way that was comfortable and didn’t inconvenience my traveling companions. Is your thought process when asked not to stow your coat in the overhead “F*** you I’m hot”?

I think I'm good on all of your rules Megan. My solution for the whole seat recline thing is I just avoid it by not ever reclining my seat, not even on international flights. The seats these days recline so little as to not really make much difference to me. So I just don't recline. I always take a window seat, not for the window but for the wall to lean against to at least try to sleep on international flights (which I never can do). I try to time my bathroom breaks if possible with my aisle seatmate needing to get up as well. If they get up to go I get up to go. It doesn't always work ... I've had aisle seatmates with bladders made of steel before and have just finally had to ask them to let me out.

I always pay to select a window seat for the same reason - something to lean against is better than reclining to me (like you, I usually can't sleep anyway). My best overnight flight (recent, not talking about 20yrs ago, when they reclined properly because we weren't all jammed in like sardines) was one where the only window seat was right at the back, and backed onto the loos, so I took it. Brilliant! Because it's not popular as the seats don't recline, I ended up with only someone on the aisle and the middle seat free, so we were both able to use it for feet and curl up, and it was much better!

The way we did the geometry, the person we dealt with ended up with the best seat of the four involved, so he jumped on it. To us, comfort was secondary to having the child with a parent. Just FYI, sometimes couples or related people will book the window seat and the aisle seats on one row on purpose, in hopes that the middle seat, which most people don't like and avoid booking, will be empty...then they get the whole row to themselves. If they would have booked the aisle + middle or window + middle, their chances of getting a 3rd person in their row is almost 100%. If you hadn't offered to let them sit together, they would have suggested it themselves, trust me. You are a good person, tho; just FYI. I don’t think it’s reasonable to sacrifice my legroom by placing it under the seat in front of me. I understand that some passengers bring larger luggage onboard, but it shouldn’t come at the expense of others’ comfort. Everyone deserves fair access to the overhead space, and a small bag like mine should not have to compete with oversized items. I’ve noticed that many travelers bring an excessive amount of luggage onboard, which creates unnecessary challenges for others. Overhead compartments should accommodate everyone fairly, and suggesting that smaller bags must give way to larger ones seems unfair and impractical.

Crying babies should not be lumped together with misbehaving kids. I am the mother of three adult children. We flew a lot when they were little and sometimes their ears hurt and they cried. But they NEVER were allowed to kick the seat in front of them, scream randomly once they were old enough to understand directions and rules, throw their food around, play games on their devices with the sound on, or the myriad of things that I see kids do today. To be fair, on my very long international flight back to the US last week, I *thought* a kid was behind me because someone kept hitting the back of my seat. When I finally looked (not easy because I was flying with my dog who was in his crate at my feet - but he did not even whimper for 11 hours) I saw it was a grown man who thought, for some reason, that hitting the back of my seat repeatedly for hours was somehow okay. I disagree on the overhead bin space, so many people bring more than 2 items or giant carry-ons, why should I jam my backpack under a seat along with my personal item because others can't follow the rules. Until the airlines start enforcing their own rules there will be issues with space.

100% correct. Because my ONE bag doesn’t have wheels it shouldn’t go in the overhead? This is one of the stupidest, most asinine perceived rules in the entire industry.

I recently flew and had the most uncomfortable "Comfort +" seat on Delta Airlines!! It was a window seat right behind First Class which was a bulkhead row. Because it was a bulkhead row the monitors aren't on the seats in front of you but apparently attached to the floor thus the metal frame sticks out into your row basically applying pressure to the side of your knee the entire trip. Further, the bathroom was right across the aisle from our row which I thought would be convenient....NOT!!! Everytime someone used that bathroom the door would make a very loud slamming noise!! Although I paid for "Comfort +" it was the the most negative flying experience I have had.

I have found the one notch of recline was enough for me along with a partially inflated neck pillow and window seat even for a lengthy flight. Also carry a lightweight sweater that can be used either as a cover in a cold airplane or folded up and used as a seat cushion on planes with minimum seat "padding".

@@enjoystraveling More than once I've had flight attendants ask me to put my backpack which is in the overhead under the seat in front of me even when I explain that is my only carry on. The theory seems to be that if it fits under the seat then you have to put it there even if that's the only item you have. I always kindly explain that it's not happening and why. If they forced this, then next time I'll bring a larger bag and put my backpack inside it.

As to number 12, you can bite me. I check bags and I bought the same ticket as you. Which means I'm entitled to the same amount of overhead space as you. So if I want to use my space for my small bag or my coat, I'm doing it. I don't owe you my discomfort because you're to cheap to check a bag.

Re removing shoes: on northern flights where you usually have to go outside in Arctic conditions, you may have winter boots that are much too warm during the flight. You may need to at least loosen those boots to let moisture escape. I often take my feet out for five or ten minutes to give my feet a break from 'swimming'. You need to consider winter conditions where you will be travelling and where you might have to survive.

Another great and informative video. Thanks for posting. I would think that airlines should place a Code of Conduct card next to the safety card in the back of every seat. Additionally, it would be nice if after the main safety announcement, a video covering the very annoying behaviors you discussed were presented. We must all learn to Share the Air With Care!

I always pick my seat because I want an aisle seat. This isn’t a big problem on short flights but on 10+ hour flights I need to get up frequently. I can sit across from a crying baby without issue because of my Bose Quiet Comfort Ultra over ear headphones. I’ll be in the air 10 times in December going to various destinations in SE Asia so I try to destress and not let things I can’t control bother me if possible because I”M ON VACATION😂 I do take my shoes off but leave my compression socks on, of course, duh.

So would you say those Bose headphones are worth the money? The cheapest I've seen is around $200, and they go up to $400 or so. I have all Bose PA speakers systems I use for karaoke gigs, so I'm already a fan, and realize you get what you pay for with Bose. It's just hard to rationalize spending so much for only a 14 hour there and 14 hour back trip. Thanks for any answers.

@ I’ve had the Bose Quiet Comfort series of headsets for many years and I think they are the best. I think the regular QC would be just fine for most people. Since I don’t buy a new one often I spent the extra for the Ultra although for my use it probably wasn’t necessary. Not knowing where you are I’ve seen the best price at Costco for the regular ones. Also if you get on Bose’s mailing list I’ll bet you can get a deal on either this coming Black Friday. Good Luck let me know when you make a purchase which ones you got.

Megan - A helpful video! Thank you. I wish this was mandatory viewing prior to boarding for ALL passengers. I noticed a huge annoyance in the video clips presented in this episode. Luggage in overhead bins should be placed WHEELS FIRST - not sideways. Wheels first makes more room for everyone’s luggage in the bins. It also makes it faster to remove the luggage when disembarking because handles are facing outward. Also, it is unacceptable to remove luggage from the bins that doesn’t belong to you. I have asked too many passengers to unhand my luggage when they wanted to replace it with their bags…tried to move mine elsewhere. I have even enlisted the support of flight attendants to stop this behavior. The nerve!
@cm5754
@cm5754 8 күн бұрын
The overhead bins are for everyone to use, not just people with carry on suitcases. Everyone can check their suitcases if they are worried about a lack of overhead space. But it is not "hogging" for someone to put a purse or briefcase in the overhead bin. The deeper issue is people trying to save a few bucks by not checking their luggage. The intended place for suitcases is the hold, not the cabin.

These things are relatively simply to solve, but alas.... I am going to be very candid and sure to irritate lots of people, but there are many people who 100% agree with me on all of these things. I don’t care either way, it is my opinion. 1. Kids do not belong on flights. Full Stop. Why do I need to have sympathy for those who choose to have kids? I don't have kids, because I don't want them. Do not tell me I am unsympathetic, you chose to have kids, deal with it. Simply put do not fly with children under somewhere between like 8-10. Why do people do this to begin with? I mean, I do see some legit reasons to do so and necessary reasons to do so, but where I live, people fly with infants just because. It is annoying and often times painful for the kid. And the amount of extra energy you need to deal with the kid also makes parents tired. So unless it is absolutely necessary, don't do it. And if you have to do it, talk to and educate your kid on good and bad behaviors before flying. Is it that hard? Noise canceling headphones and earplugs do not work well against screaming babies. It is only for machine noise that they are helpful. Kids that kick my seat, the parents get asked once, if it doesn't work I tell the flight attendant to please remedy problem or move them or me. 2. Taking your shoes off. I have to laugh at this. Anyone who complains about this is obviously uneducated or has never flown internationally. Each and ever flight I take off my shoes once we get to cruising altitude. And guess what? Almost 100% of other passengers also do the same thing. 3. Just don't recline.. Just don't... 4. Overhead bin space... well, if people would stop flying with so much stuff this wouldn't be an issue. If airlines would stop charging for bags, this wouldn't be an issue. I will continue to put my backpack in overhead bin space. I want my full space to do whatever I want with as I am tall. If airlines would stop being so stingy with leg room, this again would not be a problem. But alas! Those with roller bags and big bags should simply check them. I am sick of having people with these things think they are a priority. and I am also tired of getting hit or almost hit with them as people try to remove them from the overhead bins. Check them! 5. One more annoying thing that happened to me recently on an international long haul flight from the US to Asia on American airlines. One passenger refused to close her window blind for the entire flight. The flight attendants agreed it was rude, but yet did nothing about it. Why? They asked her, she closed it for 5 minutes and then reopened it! She had no respect for the fight attendants and it appeared the flight attendants felt they didn't have any say??? What in the world? And then jerk sitting behind me opened up his window blind every 10 minutes during the flight.. What the heck are you looking at? You cannot see anything anyway and people are trying to sleep. On most airlines outside the US the window blinds stay shut! Passengers respect the untold rule and they are more than happy to follow it. Flight attendants also tell passengers to keep them closed. Why is it so hard for American based airlines to do anything right? 6. Wear a mask if you are sick, sheesh... I wear a mask on all flights regardless, it keeps my face more moist and I feel much better after we land than I did before I started doing this. I don't feel nearly as groggy. I fly internationally many times a year. What I found is that service is declining overall, attitudes among airline personnel must be at an all-time low. Problems are never handled properly and instead passengers are told it's your problem even though we are paying for the service. It is high time to sue airlines to get them to change their ways.

For the lov 11:43 e of Pete, why..why..why, after first class passengers are seated, do airlines not board people starting at THE BACK OF THE PLANE? This would fix the problem of having to fight your way past people boarded first in the front, who seem to always take forever to get their stuff in the overhead.
