I reached out to Flight about flats for their new mini JB bass and they sent me to your channel. I've been a flats convert for years, preferring Thomastik-Infeld jazz flats on almost everything. I have a couple of 30" short scale Sandbergs which have JF324's. Even though they're 32" scale strings, they work well on the Sandbergs. But obviously they wouldn't work on the mini JB and TI doesn't make anything shorter than 32". Sounds like the these strings would work really well! Thanks for posting this video. Let's hear it for flat wounds!

Thanks and yes, love flats too. There was a bit of unwinding around the machine head (only E string) but they are a still playing great and I’m so dead I put them on. Hope yours go on well. 🤞

The sound of the flatwounds is more "jazz". Is the more frequent popping sound on the flatwounds because the action needs to be adjusted or do the magnetic pole pieces on the pickups need adjustment ? Or is it the jack on your cable or another explanation ? Very curious ! Glad to see you looking better. Best wishes Titi & Harpo woof !

Thanks Titi, I didn't notice any popping but it could have been my technique as it was only a short demo and obviously the first time I'd played the flat wound strings.

@@UkuleleWales muscle memory aside - I think you are far too good a musician for it to have been you ! Thinking maybe if all the gear is ok that perhaps the jack just wasn't pushed in completely & that caused the sound or it's slightly bent for the same effect. Regardless way more important that you are feeling better & enjoying some summer sun with family, friends & furballs. Cheers Titi & Harpo

I didn‘t hear much of a difference perhaps because I didn‘t listen with headphones on but I knew from the smile of your face when the flat wounds were played. Thanks for sharing your experience.

That's good to hear but I really would recommend trying to use headphones as they make such a difference when listening to bass.

I have the Glarry Kids Bass, which has a 25.5" scale length. That's 2 inches longer than the ukes in this video, but shorter than the 30" scale of a so-called short scale bass. I would expect that the Kala flats would need slightly higher tension on the Glarry to compensate for the greater length when mounted than would be on these 23.5" ukes. That might not be noticeable. The higher tension also would make the strings vibrate in a smaller envelope of motion, which could be good to minimize the chance of buzzing against other frets when played loudly. Any thoughts?

Hi Stanley, I'd say the Kala strings might be a bit short but you could try the Flatwounds by MBLS La Bella that are built for the 25" Goldtone micro bass.

Hello Rachel, I always wonder why you estimate the length of a string "by hand" along the headstock. Why don't you compare the projected length of the new string with the actual old one when you are going to cut it?
@UkuleleWales5 ай бұрын
Great question, I always feel they cut slightly short in the factory and I would prefer to be a bit too long and cut again if need.

Flat wounds are the best! Just want them to finally get a 5 string set, with a low B.
I also like the Flat wound strings. The smile on your face says it all! Enjoy!🎉

The flats sound heavier, meatier, but lose a bit of the spark of rounds. That said, I much like the feel of flats on my hands and the less extraneous noise.
@UkuleleWales5 ай бұрын
Totally agree with you on all counts Alan but especially on the feel when playing. Diolch and hopefully see you in person soon.

Can you please tell me how far away you cut each string from the center of the tuning peg? I just received a flight mini bass as a birthday gift and would like to change to those strings Thank you
@UkuleleWales3 ай бұрын
I generally go the length of 2 pegs one about 3 to 4” BUT remember you can always cut more off, just don’t cut too much off to start with. 👍
