Ommadon vs. Sir Peter.
Magic vs. Logic.
Guess who wins.
One of my all-time favorite scenes from any movie I've ever seen. I've loved this part ever since I was a kid and I've only ever felt more inspired by it as I've gotten older.
Just felt like I needed to share this little piece of me with the world. :)
Peter's "incantations:"
"A body in motion tends to stay in motion." - Newton's First Law of Motion
"Protons have 1832 times the mass of electrons." - 30 years later, more precise measurements say 1836 www.google.com/search?q=mass%2...
"All light is bent or refracted as it goes from one medium to another, save in a direction perpendicular to the interface between the two mediums." - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Refraction
"...new species may result from the selective action of external conditions upon the variations from their specific type which individuals present...." - T. H. Huxley, to Darwin on Origin of Species
"Gravity varies as to the inverse square of the distance." - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inverse-...
"The velocity of light is equal to the wavelength times the frequency of vibration." - This is actually true of anything that propagates as a wave as it's the definition of the phase velocity of the wave. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phase_ve...
"The geometrical properties of the space-time continuum are determined by the masses present in space and time." - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_...
"Come algebra, anatomy, astronomy, biology, chemistry, geology, geometry, mathematics, meteorology, mineralogy, oceanography, paleontology, physics, psychology, sociology, trigonometry, and zoology!"
Flight of Dragons is (c) WB 1982

@Terastas
@Terastas 5 жыл бұрын
What's worth noting is that he only denied magic itself, not everything that was ever once thought to be magical. All of his allies survived because their magical nature had some logic behind it. Ommadon went out of his way to deny any sort of logical order, so all he truly had was trickery of the mind. It's never clearly stated, but I'd like to think the reason he shriveled up into dust at the end was because he realized even his own continued existence for untold eons was a trickery performed upon his own mind, whereas the other three wizards would probably lay out all the details of a "magic spell" that translates into diet and exercise.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t that “out-sciencing” part of Ommadon’s plan from the start? Let humanity advance their pseudo-magic, their armored steeds and spells of flame… to the point that a few humans driven by greed, pride and wrath could lead to all of them getting destroyed. His plan would’ve involved such small amounts of dark magic, if any at all, that Ommadon never had to consider the threat any human posed to his whole heaping mass.

"Man hears of the dragon's invulnerable skin, and lo, he makes armor, battleships, tanks. The fairy flies, and furiously jealous, Man himself defies gravity with machines he will call airplanes. The magician gazes into a crystal and sees and hears halfway across the world. 'Ah,' says Man, 'if only it could be so!' And centuries from now, he conjures up miracles, but calls them radio and television. If Man is to surmount the insurmountable, he must always have magic to inspire him. The world needs magic. Logic has the ability to destroy fear if you look at it from a different point of view. It destroys illogical fear. Just a couple hundred years ago people were afraid to go out at night because evil spirits and witches. Now we have rave parties at night. Logic has dismissed MANY things that people were afraid of. Fear still exists, but no magic that deliberately invokes fear.

But logic can overcome fear as well, right? That's the part about being human that makes us special. We can understand our fear in deeply profound way that other animals just can't. And as we understand it, we learn to appreciate and accept it for what it is. And then it loses sway over us.

It depends from interpretation from the single author... but that's usually not true. Magic and technology works differently because technology is bound by the laws of nature, physics and REALITY even when it bends them to its will. On the other hand, magic can literally surpass and rewrite the laws of reality, even if it has to obey some other laws (usually). But in the end, since magic doesn't really exist, it's all a matter of an author's perspective.

+Dylan Fix The metaphor for peter denying all magic, is him realizing that for logic to prevail, all things in fantasy have to be denied as real, this INCLUDES all the good in fantasy along with all the evils in it. That what he had to accept, like with all atheists, we all had happy memories of pleasant things from our childhood, father christmas, the easter bunny, the tooth fairy, but the same fantasies brought about demons and ghosts and monsters under the bed. Peter choose to accept logic, and deny all the good and evil in fantasy as being real.

Just a small pocket of it remains, to give humans "inspiration".I think the whole point is that it's possible to rid ourselves of the more harmful aspects of irrational thinking, like superstition, while still maintaining a small part of irrationality that is a necessary part of being human. Or phrase it however you want. They try to strike a balance. Silly movie, but I can't fault the message.

Scarcely a true scientist, I am afraid. If "magic", however one wants to define it, can produce an empirically observable effect then it is by definition "real". It should be understood and patched into our flawed but ever improving understanding of the world, made part of science, rather than be denied. A scientist should be salivating at a previously unseen facet of the universe being laid bare to him, not denying what his eyes tell him.
