To be fair, VATSIM has been around for ages, and is already (optionally) available for many of the other flight sims that are available currently. (I.e. X-Plane, FSX, FS2004 etc ... but it is cool to see that the functionality appears to be built in to the new product as opposed to having to use a plugin to get it working (or so I hope!)

@@WoksAndPansCafe that's the point - they've learned from other top players and integrated all into this single package. This and all the real world generated from Bing + AI that drives the render. This is the true next gen stuff. I see a minus though - all those 12years old ADHD kids who will be trolling on the radio...bleh

(1) Begin by just listening into ATC conversations, perhaps at a small-medium size airport. (LiveATC provides an easy to use free service online for tons of airports around the world.) (2) learn the basic “4W’s” sentence structure - Ie state WHO you’re addressing, state WHO YOU ARE, state WHERE you are, then state WHAT you want. (3) Over time it will start to “stick.” Keep listening in ... but expand your ATC phraseology (vocabulary) by reading the parts of the FAA AIM manual (free PDF download, but it is a tome !) (4) Improve your radio skills by practicing (eg in the car talking to yourself out loud). Think of it as “chair flying” and transitioning into VATSIM. (5) supplement with free ground school KZbin videos re: radio comms.

Don't be scared! Do your first flight "text only" with "/t" in the remarks of your flight plan and add a "new to vatsim". Controllers will be helpful and it is easier to understand and repeat written instructions. Once comfortable switch to voice.

Thanks RR - Another brilliant Video. I've been a member of VATSIM since 2002, and I can remember how intimidating it was, starting off for the first time, getting used to the phraseology, procedures, etc. I'm pretty sure there are some good videos about getting started on VATSIM, but just a couple of tips for anyone who is new to it, that helped me - come the new FS - 1. Know your aircraft first (how to fly it, where all the knobs are and what they do!) 2. Go to a less busy airport first and just park up somewhere and just listen and watch for a couple of hours. 3. Get the charts for the airports and follow them as you listen to others do their stuff. It helps with familiarization. 4. When you've got some confidence, and your ready to fly, start and finish at the smaller simpler airports (simple as in layout, taxiways, etc) EGGD - Bristol or EGPH - Edinburgh are good ones for this - and generally they're regularly online and not too busy. This gives you time to think. 5. Put NEWBIE in your comments when connecting to the VATSIM network (not sure how this will be in FS2020) or at least when you first contact an ATC controller at an airport - let them know you're new - the ATC will be more patient and encouraging. Don't forget, some of the ATC Controllers might be newish themselves in their relevant positions. We all have to start somewhere. 6. And Practice. Just a few suggestions to mitigate the nerves.

Didn't buy stronger PC since to be able to fly but if I remember well you used to be a member of some Virtual Airlines to be able to fly VATSIM (I could be wrong.. don't remember) but it could be another idea for your nice video to mention this opportunity to be a member of Virtual Airlines too. When training new pilots, the flying is relatively easy. The challenge is almost always with decision making with weather and ATC Communication. Having a way for prospective pilots to get used to communicating on the radio is a massive help. If they get that experience with this flight sim then that will make better use of their time learning other items in the real place. It's fantastic that they are going to include this. I do wonder if there is going to be issues with people getting onto frequencies and talking like it's a game and not sticking to the real world style communication. Thanks for the great content!

Pilotese can be a bit daunting at first, but as long as you're familiar with the phonetic alphabet it's pretty easy to pick up (even if you don't know what to say, you'll at least understand what someone else is telling you to do)

Hey not saying you are wrong however each country will not have separate lingo it is all English and nato phonetic so you will not need to learn any different lingo depending on where you want to fly

Thatdude Gaming incorrect. Different regions use different words and phrases. Russia and China use meters for altitudes. The rest of the world uses feet. The US says 121.5 with a point while the rest of the world uses decimal. Instrument procedures are different in the US. All of these differences are easily surmountable, but there are differences
@thatdudegaming196

Ace ya that is true however they are very minimal differences and if you know point you know decimal means the same thing. In terms of the meters just keep a converter open and you should be fine

I'm pretty ok with ATC calls - my main issue is just understanding the planes and remembering how they work so tutorials on the various planes in msfs2020 would be awesome :)

Got 10 hours under my belt from many years ago and life got in the way, would love to start up again, im in the aviatoon industry re-finishing private aircraft and the passion and buzz is overwhelming, so on my wish list is a complete start up for beginners and those with an insight already, ive updated my pc 🖥 to Intel in 9th gen, 32gb ddr4 paired ram, 500gb v-nand ssd on gigabyte mobo, and RTX 2070 GPU. so I'm set with the hardware apart from yoke I have 2x24" monitors and studio set-up with decent mic 🎤. Waiting for August 18th. Also on my wish list would be tutorials on vatsim its self in the Microsoft environment as I say im coming back into all of this as its been too long, best of all got rid of the other half in life as dont want any interruptions so divorce is settled 😜✈✈✈🛬🛫🛩😆😆🤣🤣👍

Hi. Newbie here. I’ve always watched flight sim videos, sad that I couldn’t play it myself as I’ve never owned a PC good enough to run it. Delighted they are releasing it for console but sad it won’t be out for Xbox One.my mate and I have pretty much decided to switch to PlayStation for the next generation but because of Flight Sim, I’m severely tempted to go for Xbox. Since lockdown, I’ve became a bit fascinated with aviation and flying passenger aircraft in particularly. Even now I know absolutely nothing about flying a plane but I’m desperate to play this. Your tutorials would be a great help and knowing that as a start off, you can just have the settings set for you for take off, is great news for folk like me. Love the videos and can’t wait to buy this. Cheers and good luck.

I’m havering now as I’m hungover to fuck and just want the earth to open up and sacrifice me, but I love the whole airport experience. I only fly once a year for my holidays to Ukraine but in contrast to a lot of people, I spend as much time in the airport and possible. There’s nothing better than sitting in departures with a nice cold pint knowing there is no worry in the world as you are in total holiday mode. Can’t wait for this CV shit to die down so I can do it again this year.

Hey, Reaction Review, at the 4:40 mark; where is that footage from. We did an organized event at Osh Kosh for STOL drags and that footage looks VERY familiar. If it's from that event, that X-Cub is me! Unfortunately the identification numbers aren't visible, so I can't confirm.

The radio work on getting my radio licence (and exam) was the hardest and most nerve racking part of doing my PPL. As I flew in and out of an airport I had to talk to air traffic control but I always tried to fly around controlled airspace away from my airport so as to avoid talking to anyone.

As a real world ATC for the past 15 years aswell as a previous VATSIM pilot and controller. If you are nervous and have mic fright, try some just VFR flights first. Depending on whos online just ask for VFR flight following. Take off go fly around a bit then return. That bit is easy as far as phraseology and procedures arw concerned. Once you get confident doing that try some IFR flights. Picking up a IFR clearance can be difficult for someone new. Just ask the controller on VATSIM to go slow so you can write it all down and then read back correctly. As in real life and VATSIM a controller can tell if youre new. And will do everything they can to help you out. After all thats what were here for

Count me in for someone who is a beginner but wants to take it serious. I'd love to know the very basics about VatSim required to not embarrass myself. Is there a bare minimum that a pilot can start off with that won't come off the wrong way with the community? I mean before I know all the details of flying but can at least maneuver around the plane. Or, is it better to be an absolute pro at flying first and understand every instrument and every aspect of flying first?

@@AA-tz2bm Excellent advice! I use this when I'm teaching my ESL students. Pay attention to how native speakers speak, listen careful and when they're ready, try speaking up and mistakes are fine. Hope this same style really does translate over. I know ATC 9n vatsim probably just really hate the ones who are on there taking the piss and making a mockery of the system. Thanks again for your advice and see you in the skies.

While I have flown on vatsim it our title was a bit misleading. I was hoping they were going to have a tie in with liveatc to actually stream real atc traffic based off where you were at prolixity wise and what channel you were tuned to. Then it would actually be real traffic. It would theoretically also coordinate well since it pulls live flight traffic from flightaware. I know fax had a plug-in you could get for it but it was not very well done. Here’s hoping maybe with the new version we can see an improved one that is closer to real time atc.
