@@Bill4LE I think you can get rid of annoying tooltips by re-installing software from scratch. I noticed a checkbox on initial install screen that said Tootips Yes or No (or similar). Unfortunately I made the assumption that one could turn them on/off inSim and checked the wrong box. I have read this elsewhere also, but have not tried it myself. What is your take? Love PilotEdge! Auto ATC is a bit silly for RWS real world sim pilots. IMO FS2020 has quite a few hurdles to go for RWS. Has no multi monitor support for the training community that use 3 wide and air manager touchscreen below. Also weak IFR instrumentation. Thanks for video. Check out stock KSNA Hotel>Charlie>Juliet. LOL The tower LOL. Oh well they will fix it eventually.

I have done most all the flight sims, got hyped and purchased MSFS 2020, and in all this time have never been so eager to do it all the right way. This video did it for me. Your video has inspired me to move forward and do it the right way. This was very well done. Excellent. Thanks, Bill, these videos where you explain the what, the how, and especially the “why” are helpful. Funny that you mentioned us feeling intimidated by some of the ops. I tried my first PE flight last night and felt intimidated by the ATC interactions. I was surprised by this, as I grew up around GA and have watched practically every “live flight” video on YT, so I’m pretty used to what’s said. Also I have my Part 107, the training for which covered some basic radio material even though it’s not used there (except to sometimes listen). I guess I didn’t want to make a mistake or do something stupid. And the controller was very busy & was a little hard to understand. I was approaching a Class Delta airport, and even turned around to fly further back as I got closer than 10NM before getting myself to start the dialog. In the end I made it and landed but wasn’t entirely sure I was responding correctly even though I thought I knew what I should say. 🤔 It would be cool if there was a way to play back prior ATC dialog (the way I think we can IRL) as it would be a good learning tool to see how we sounded.

Early MSFS helped me greatly with being a "good-stick." But I always wanted something like this because physically *flying* is relatively easy. The procedures, checklists, etc. is where it get's hard. IMHO. BTW, if you aren't already, you seem like you have the personality fit for being an instructor.

Great video! First time on your channel and I just joined the Discord too! I used to fly out of MYF and the SD area, so I totally agree on the learning in busy airspace and transitions. Since almost every flight I got clearance to transition through Miramar’s Class B along the I-15, everything else was pretty much a breeze. Some people panic at the thought of flying in B, but it was just another day for me. (Also helps that some of those Marines were likely people I worked with at some point.) 🤘😜👍 I will definitely be getting Pilot Edge at some point soon!

Now go land on top of half dome (land in the valley next to the lodge) and pulpit rock in Norway after doing hammerheads right above the pyramids (up one side and down the other with the carbon cub! I've been training out of Fullerton, and also using PilotEdge, and want to echo everything Bill says about the ZLA airspace. It's tricky and fun and can prepare you for anything! It's definitely a little more anxiety-inducing when you're in an actual plane in actual airspace and actual traffic to crash into, but it's pretty dang close! Also to promote PilotEdge, I've had a similar experience to Bill. He went full deep-end on his training and got the super fast-track (full solo XC at 12 hours! madman) but my story is similar as well -- when I started in 2018 my instructor hadn't heard of PilotEdge; he was amazed at my radio and IFR capabilities off the bat. We were able to focus training on handling the airplane. In my first 12 hours of training I've gone cross-country from FUL to CRQ and back which included the SNA transition, flight following, and a VFR-on-top clearance as a low ceiling rolled in while we were having lunch at Palomar. I've also flown a full IFR with foggles, including getting a TEC route clearance and shooting the ILS at Chino. BTW flying IFR without an auto-pilot is intense. Although he was in the plane for both flights, he was hands-off and I was able to handle them as if they were solo.

Nice video. I've not heard of pilotedge. It seems like an interesting product for practising your radio work especially in the US. Just from your flight though I would say the airspace around LA seems pretty easy compared to Switzerland. So I'm not sure I would agree with your statement that LA airspace is the hardest to fly in in the world. ;-) But then again that is only going by your short flight. We have three fairly major international airports (Zürich, Basle and Geneva) in relative close proximity and three additional smaller commercial airports (Bern, Sion and Lugano) which would be equivalent to regional airports in the US. Add to that four major air force bases and a number of minor ones plus a number of large GA airports with controlled airspace all in a very small country and you can imagine the nightmare it is being careful to avoid accidentally busting someone's airspace. I'm rather glad I didn't start flying over here till after GPS was invented. I can't imagine what it was like flying only with paper charts back in the day when I first started flying in Canada long ago. I imagine I would be constantly petrified. The fine here for busting controlled airspace is about CHF 10'000 or roughly US$10'000 with today's exchange rate.
@Bill4LE
@Bill4LE 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and you comments, Geoffrey. The thing that adds to the LA airspace which is not represented in the sim is traffic. Once you're on flight following, the airspace isn't too bad at all. But add traffic and it becomes a completely different beast. The US is much much much friendlier to GA though!

If yu know what aircraft you wll be flying (or several different) in real life. Get a copy of the POH, and checklists for that aircraft. Some aircraft have modifications to them that can change performance and checklists. Routinely using the correct checklists at appropriate times (even if the sim aircraft is not exact) will help when flying real time.

Just signed up for your discord, I do have some questions on some approach types that are confusing :-) Do you feel like the real plane is easier or harder to fly / land vs. the sim. Great video, a couple of tech. questions. What do you use to connect to Pilot edge. I use flight events to connect to my ipad/ForeFlight . The rate is in real time as in real world. It also has a discord button. Do you see only pilot edge planes in the sim or live traffic in the sim? Next tech question, how do you get your image to not show a back ground and how do you get the iPad on your screen real-time as well. Lastly a tip. Get and lean track ir it totally makes flying more realistic. I also programmed two button to give me instruments one and instruments 3 I believe it is. Makes setting radios so much easier. I also have some tuning knives set to flight stick buttons as well namely heading bug and altimeter set (g1000) on my warthog. Lastly I use the target software to run the warthog Hotas (without the joystick) so that some button can access out of game routines. Center and pause track ir . It could also be set up to have a button for externals coms like twitch, discord or teamspeak or whatever.

If your local airport isn’t covered by Live ATC or is not very good on there (only offers one frequency), I’d also recommend buying a handheld air band transceiver. I have an iCom. So does this ATC program use discord automatically shift you between channels or something? Or does that in its own program? Also, seems very professional, and not newb friendly (from intimidation factor).
@Bill4LE
@Bill4LE 3 жыл бұрын
Melon, no the ATC program is using the sim to change frequencies. Discord is not involved. If the radios in the plane are not turned on, you won't hear anyone. There are a lot of newb-friendly learning materials that can help but it is very much a realistic environment.
@coma13794
@coma13794 3 жыл бұрын
Problems occur if newbs are undertaking ops that they're not prepared to do. If you don't bit off way more than you can chew and you make use of the training material that's provided, it's hard to go wrong. If you simply jump in the plane and go, hoping to learn it on the fly, that's when the wheels come off. The program doesn't use Discord for comms, the voice interaction is built-in to the pilot client. It provides VHF modulation based on line of sight (including terrain interference)...Discord doesn't provide any of that. (disclosure: I work with PE)

So it wasn't a complete type, but I did pass. I only have a joystick and my takeoffs are really good (being easiest) my landings are getting better, then I upped my skill level from easy to medium and of course the landing got harder again, but I'm getting better. What I'd like to do is like fly and like make a flight plan, should that be my next step Bill? I know I rushing but my clock it ticking, if you get my drift. I'd really want to do IRF, I don't know if I'm even smart enough to do that, but that's my goal. Could you give me maybe some step by step goals to do to get to IFR? That's awesome! What would recommend is flying around with SkyVector open in a second screen or device. MSFS right now is terrible for IFR. There won't be much you could actually do. X-Plane is still the king there. Other than that, there are a bunch of fantastic videos on how to make VFR flight plans and NAVLOGS. With how good this sim looks, planning out a flight on paper and doing what's called dead reckoning. Each leg is timed and has a heading. I think you could have an absolute blast flying across the country in something fun and slow by dead reckoning.

@@scottfranco1962 If you get into doing ATC on VATSIM, I'd be happy to fly in your area of control and add to your traffic! :) Let me know where that is, if you are given an assignment.

@@danniem San Francisco/San Jose. I'd do LA but I don't know enough curse words. (actually no joke, I get yelled at every time I enter LA airspace).

Can the atc command be auto mated?? So you can practice repeating it over and over??

It cannot be. These are real people and it is treated like the real national airspace. They have training flights that are excellent at introducing you to concepts. It's great!

@@Bill4LE ok then how about pre set voice then to give to atc? So you dont have to speak? I know there is an offline version for this. And you can also do it in the game. 😁 The command of what to say is in the menu. So if they use voice attack to generate these command it can be relayed to real people at the atc. I think this will be good cause then it helps newbie like me hear the command spoken.😁

@@Sherlock245 unfortunately those textual ATC options are garbage. They actually make it harder to learn because so much of it is incorrect. PilotEdge is one of the best ways to learn. Thr next best way would be in a plane with a CFI in a real plane...and that can be expensive :)

Can someone help me understand. Is he talking to real life ATC tower from the game. Is the ATC communication is AI generating or real life controller taking to him in real time.

I'm talking to a real person. They are view a radar scope similar to what real controllers use. It's real time and uses all real-world procedures.

@@Bill4LE you are in the game, are you taking to real person in real life who is inside an ATC tower in real time? I trying to understand if you are taking to real time atc just like you would in real life in ground.
