Flight Simulator 2020 - Rudder Issues Revisited

My rudder sticks and does not recenter on my Xbox controller(on a Xbox). I think it is a glitch. And it makes it really difficult to fly. Anything you know that can help?

Unfortunately I don't have an Xbox to run any testing on. The number of complaints from this patch on this issue is very high so it definitely sounds like a bug in the update which is not the first time this has happened. I'm not sure if you can try redownloading and checking the controls and AI settings again after but beyond that I would suggest sending the dev's a bug report :( Now this is similar to what xpander xsert posted, and while I'm not sure if you can get into dev mode loading one functional plane then flipping to another "may" help. "Sometimes using dev mode to jump into another plane and then right back to the original plane will cure that. Sometimes an axis is set to being a centering axis and sometimes not, which will make a difference. Sometimes an axis is programmed to update the axis numerical values 'continuously' and sometimes programmed to be 'on change'. If it is set to 'on change' then a rudder will not stay in a position off center when the controller (e.g. the pedal) is not moving. On 'continuously' the rudder will mirror where the pedals are at all times. The most common problem is programming the same axis twice. So there are 2 conflicting inputs."

What I did to fix this is went into button mapping and select all under primary flight controls. there is rudder yaw, left and right and rudder axis, left and right it is pre set to rudder yaw. I re mapped them to rudder axis and now they snap back to center

My rudder for some reason moves by it self. I hate it. Auto rudder and auto trim is off. It still does it

my rudder is sticking and i use Cloud gaming for xbox one and anytime i use rudder it sticks and i have to use the opposite rudder to recenter it and i can’t find out how to fix it. The controls are fine i checked them but i can’t find anything else that might help. It sucks cause i love this game and i can’t play it correctly

Does using opposite rudder temporarily fix it or do you have to hold rudder to keep it straight? May try remapping the bindings in case the config doesnt register them for some reason. Does it happen on all airplanes? A fix for a number of folks right now is to load one plane then change to the one you want.

@@Ripskin16 Say i pulled the right trigger the rudder would go all the way to the right and if i released the trigger it would stay and if i tapped the left trigger once the rudder would move slightly to the left but the rudder would still be to the right unless i tapped the left trigger multiple times to center it or get the rudder to the left, and it’s like this for all my planes including planes that i bought. This all happened with the new update a couple weeks ago (the Canada update)

@@flymeaway1216 It sounds like the controller is either sending input to the game or the game thinks that input is different so it stay's pressed. I wonder also if the deadzone for that trigger needs to be widened as it may be registering just a little bit of input to initiate a pull? Could be worth reinstalling it depending on which windows OS.

@@flymeaway1216 same here bud....they have a major update coming up this Friday on the 11th which is the 40th anniversary of Flight Simulator and I can't wait ss they're gonna introduce helicopters finally amongst other stuff. Hopefully it will be fixed after this update🤞 Anyways... yes I use cloud gaming exactly like you do. So I know that you're going through as I have been waiting patiently unfortunately to get back on flying again after the Canada update that screwed it all up unfortunately

It could be related to a rudder issue so it is worth checking the call outs here for the AI assisting with rudder control or the right mappings to control the rudder. Is that a community plane or a new one that is with the game out of the box? If it is a community plane there may be a bug in new versions of MSFS that a patch is needed for the plane and if its from MS they do break things at times :( Has the plane ever worked for ground stearing? And is this the only plane having the issue?

I do still use my C940 almost every day. I still run it in Eco mode which limits the battery to 60% of total capacity to maintain longer battery life and performance. I still typically run the unit in the lowest resource settings to drive more battery life and such. This is as my primary usage is consumption on the device. I get about 4 to 5 hours of life out of it from watching 720p youtube video's and light web surfing usage. If windows update or something kicks in and I need to ramp up the resource usage to let things go it does have a good amount of gusto in it still which does drain the battery since the SSD, network, memory and CPU are being utilized much more. Full tilt usage I would not recommend on battery only unless you only want about 90 minutes in eco mode on the FHD model. If I unlock the full battery and charge it I could get about 2.5 hours of high usage. If I kept it restricted resource wise I would be pushing about 8 to 10 total hours of battery life. The 4k unit was great, but if I recall had a more powerful CPU (more power draw and more resource utilization to drive the display) and the display being 4k will train power a lot more as well. Not owning the unit I cannot directly speak to it but I would surmise that if I'm pulling about 4 hours on 60% battery minimal usage it would get about 2 to 2.5 hours. Not bad and a gorgeous display but it comes at a cost. I cant recall if you can change the panel resolution to just FHD but then whats the point of getting the 4k unless the deal is top notch. Windows update does still from time to time botch things periodically but overall it has settles down. I have not upgraded to windows 11 as I dont care right now. Some times I do notice more bog down in youtube or some sites that are cramming a lot on it but remember I have mine set to minimal resources and may have too many things hitting it at once to keep up for a brief period. This has not impacted my usage though just an observation. As things start taking more and more advantage of newer hardware and architecture this will show more age but I know I'll get another 3 to 5 years out of it at least. Hope that helps!

Anyone else still having this issue? I've tried multiple controllers. The aircraft keeps pulling to the left. its like the rudder is stuck to the left on every plan. I have even tried without a joystick using just a keyboard - same thing. beyond annoying.

yup, but only on the a320s in this game, rudder sticks, almost like it doesnt recognize my rudder axis that i setup on my controller as an actual axis, but more like a button, id reckon theres something broken with the a320s in this game or something

​@@Someoneudk890what helped for me was to set a deadzone for the rudder which stopped the constant pull to the left, but still didn't behave like an axis

Ok so i just found out that for some reason when i map my rudder it adds some weird button combination, i can use my rudder in flight now with the a320, but when im on the ground it still swerves left and right alot because the rudder still sticks, and im also not sure if i can use the rudder properly now with other aircraft

Mine just won't work after landing. Works before takeoff, during flight, but the moment wheels r down they freeze

Weird, is that on PC Or xbox? Latest update? AI assistance and other stuff all checked? Sounds like the game is dropping something somewhere. I have had an off and on bug with ATC that drops off and wont work or only partially works over halfway through a flight. Different system but weird bug of it works fine then falls apart.

@@Ripskin16 I just had the same issue. I landed the damn plane, and as soon as I landed, the game would not let me use the freaking rudders.They froze up, and next thing you know, I'm veering off into the grass

Thats a new one, does it happen on default planes as well or only on that Airliner? Any mods for pushing? Does the rudder still deflect in line with your inputs but no translated action or is it totally out?

I’m having major rudder issues all assistance is off when I was on xbox using controller I had no issue I recently went to pc and started using the Logitech extreme 3d pro joystick and now I can’t control the plane on the ground .. so as I start rolling it starts going right .. when I land soon as all wheels hit the ground it’s turning right im flying the a320n btw any one with any knowledge or can help please chime in

Is the joystick axis set as the control for the rudder and is it calibrated properly?

@@danielwilliams6600 Calibration is usually done within windows / the drivers for the control item. The game just reads that information and lets you do some further adjustment of dead zones and things for your liking. Usually in the control panel for devices and printers when you are in the device you can find a calibrate option. I have heard that not all have this but I have not had a joy stick for a long time. Should be something in the logitech software unless they automated some of it. There are some game issues, AI assistance, and other settings that can mess with it and game settings have been known to be adjusted by some updates.

OK so I solved the issue by the workaround: get Cessna and start flight in VFR mode then go back to the main manu and restart the game. After that my A32NX (also A320) ruddle works fine. No change in control settings or assistants. I also want to say that I had the same issue on Xbox remote play so Microsoft account and also on my Steam account. So same issue for two platforms.

That is very interesting, I wonder if its assigning the incorrect control / flight model to the aircraft or limiting it for some reason. I wonder if there is something custom downloaded aircraft or something that may confuse it on load in or something in a config file that has to be forced back by the Cessna loading before everything works. Sounds similar to the early game where the flight controls were all over the place sensitivity wise and nothing got saved in properly and had to be reset every update and game load for a few patches.

Xbox controller doesn not center rudders on release. It's made the game unplayable for months. I've tried everything. Microsoft is not addressing the problem.

They took a LONG time to fix the original issues too :( Multiple patches and like half a year or more. It did improve but it was still an issue for far to long. Can try to see if the dead zones on the triggers need to be expanded, perhaps something is sending an input and the game takes it non stop. I know I submitted multiple bug reports for the original one I was experiencing. The more people flood them the faster they'll get looking into it :(.

@@Halo_nogget You can fix this by changing the rudder control buttons to 'axis' in the controls options menu. it took me a while to find it, but if you 'show all' under the available button assignments you can see there is a different selection available called rudder axis or something. change to that over what the default is after the update and it should fix it!

Are you flying on auto pilot or attempting to fly manually? Using the keyboard? Are those key's mapped to the control surfaces so you can fly with them?

Not helpful for me. Issue is not related to control settings or assistance. Its a bug for a lot of users. Some players solved this issue by onetime using VFR mode. For me ruddle its not working or chaotically working on each joystick for A320. VFR mode didn't helped also.

Sorry to hear that, I have not been able to find anything specific about this current round of issues other than it appears to most impact joystick users. Hopefully they get it patched back soon or more info becomes available.

What I'm seeing is that it get's stuck to left or right during flight/taxi. It appeared to get unstuck by itself once. Other times it seems to get unstuck by just going to controls, not even making changes, and resuming flight.

Hmm, this was an update to the original video pulling in a number of things people had called out and I had seen related to the issue. Some people had controller problems, others calibration, others AI assist issues. Some people had directly asked for what my setup was to try and correlate their hardware. Not sure I would call a 9.5 minute video a stretch of chit chat for watch time. Not sure if you looked at the original video or the other comments to see just how many different scenarios and things were happening. Common thread was the rudder / steering on the ground would creep or full engage and was not isolated to PC players either. I do appreciate the feedback and will consider it if I do any further or similar videos :)
