Adrian Newey wrote in his book about how he and Christian Horner had made a special trip to the Viry facility to essentially beg for some kind of commitment to improving performance. The answer they got was something akin to "meh".

One small addition that gives some extra context: Adrian Newey's book mentions him and Horner making a trip to Renault's engine base at Viry in an effort to push for a solid commitment to improving performance. The fact that Renault's "performance division" (what they call Alpine after it was acquired) has decided not to use Renault power units is probably the most damning development in the Renault saga.
@TheHarrie93Ай бұрын
Unlike McLaren, RedBull actually had race winning cars with an under performing engine. Something McLaren painfully found out after their switch to Renault after blaming Honda for years on end and still being a back marker.
@ediltonspencer697429 күн бұрын
First mistake was pushing Honda to return 1 year ahead of schedule. Second mistake was insisting in that "size-zero" concept that was heavily compromising the engine performance and reliability. As soon as Honda freed itself from the size limitation, performance was immediately unlocked. Yet McLaren and Alonso kept humiliating Honda when they could have had a very good partnership. Honda should've never let Alonso race with their engine ever again.
@danielhenderson831629 күн бұрын
@@ediltonspencer6974 Let's not pretend the 2017 Honda was on the same level as the Renault. That was a brand new engine for that year that Honda had issues with the whole season, especially if you watched that McLaren Pre-Season documentary on Amazon Prime that year. This Honda engine didn't become worthwhile until the end of the 2018 Season and would have still been blamed by McLaren for their chassis problems. If anything, this worked out the best for McLaren and Honda. McLaren got to fire everyone buried the company and almost into bankruptcy and Honda got a partner that could help them improve and both won championships. It was also the Honda engine the blew up for Alonso at the Indy 500.

@bornresaabe29 күн бұрын
The way you put it is almost entirely false. Red Bull offered Ricciardo the same money as Renault. This has been confirmed by Horner many times. People forget Ricciardo in 2018 was worth every single one of those pennies he was offered. He earned those big contracts with his results. Yes he is a marketing dream, but back then he was one of the best in F1 without question. He left because the team was becoming Verstappen's team (which is fine, any team should do that. Max is probably going to be the best to ever do it when it's all said and done) and he was concerned about Honda engines. Daniel had his prime years almost entirely wasted in regards to being able to win a championship with poor engines from 2014-2018. The Honda engine gamble at that time was even worse than the Renault engine. I'm sure Alonso would have taken a Renault engine over a Honda engine every day of the week. Let's get one thing clear though. Verstappen was not cooking him. Yes he was faster on one lap around 70% of the time (nothing wrong with that) but he was pushing Verstappen every weekend and was very good in the races. Every season he matched Verstappen with race wins. Red Bull with Verstappen and Ricciardo was their best ever duo they had and still to this day they have struggled for a good pairing since Ricciardo left.
