Grant, I really enjoy your videos. Yours are different (for the countless other youtubers) in the sense that they aren’t filled with a lot of BS. They’re straight forward, no nonsense, which makes them enjoyable! Thanks for taking the time to put these together.

I only recently found your channel and I am really enjoying your videos. I really enjoy your camera angles and the quality of the video is amazing. I would love to see a view out the windscreen during your landings though, that would be great. But I realize there are only so many cameras you can put up. Not a nitpick so I hope you don’t take it that way, just a respectful request.
@GrantBaker
@GrantBaker 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I’ve had several requests for that angle. In your opinion, which would be best angle for my next camera: out the windscreen or inside the cockpit like I had a bit of in this video?

@@GrantBaker i’d have to say inside the cockpit. But I do like the view out the windscreen during landings but if I had to choose I’d say inside the cockpit. I enjoy the way you do the videos, the way you kind of think out loud as you go through the process. I see another steve-O in the making. 👍🏻

That’s not something I want to share here. But new ones are over $5 million right now and I’ve seen used ones listed up to $7 million. Demand for the PC12 has been incredible recently. That’s awesome that you’re interested in aviation! In the US, you can start taking lessons at any age. You can fly a plane by yourself at 16, and get your license at 17.

With pattern altitude well below base, why not cancel IFR in air?
@GrantBaker
@GrantBaker 3 жыл бұрын
Pattern altitude in a turbine airplane is 1,500’ AGL, which was the reported ceiling. Keeping the IFR allows me to disregard distance from clouds and just stay out of them. One less thing to worry about at an unfamiliar airport.

Get your IFR CLEARANCE before engine start on your cell phone, enter the route and squawk and set up your radios, start the engine and get your IFR RELEASE at the end of the runway. Your airplane burns 30 gph at idle so why have the engine running while you get the clearance? Getting your clearance this way allows you to study and comprehend it without the engine noise and fuel burn. This is especially important if you get a full route clearance with a route you did not plan or file.
@GrantBaker
@GrantBaker 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, that's definitely a good habit, and I should do it more. Departing GSH, it's rare to get a re-route and getting a clearance only takes a minute or two, so it's not burning too much gas. Also, you probably already know this, but with just STBY on, you can use COM2 to get weather/clearances. Since GSH has an RCO, no need for the phone call.

I was taught if you go around off the visual approach, you're supposed to call approach to advise them you're going back to the pattern. Anyone else taught the same?
@GrantBaker
@GrantBaker 3 жыл бұрын
According to 5-4-23(e) of the AIM, you aren’t required to. If you know somebody is following you, it would probably be a good idea to let ATC know if there’s time. On this one though, I was focused on the helicopter that was in the pattern and flying the airplane, and it didn’t cross my mind.

Why would you do a go around for a bird? I assume the separator is open for landing.
@GrantBaker
@GrantBaker 3 жыл бұрын
Yep it’s always open for landing, but it was a turkey buzzard. I’m concerned about a strike on any part of the airplane with a bird that size.
