I was here on the day, as my friend was flying to Orlando on this flight as I watched them depart at Southside, which is a spotting location at Manchester Airport. So your pilot friend is named Dave or Neil? As they were the pilots flying as my friend has a pic in the flight deck once he arrived.

Actually, back when Virgin landed their 747-200 at Leeds Bradford, it had to perform a very short takeoff, I believe it only had a limited amount of passengers and fuel, after takeoff, it would fly to Birmingham to fuel up.

The 747 was a big part of my growing up. I would always listen to my father talk about flying on it for his business trips around the world. I have yet to fly on one, but I really hope to make that dream a reality sometime soon!

Zero pax and zero cargo? I was in the cockpit of an AA 757 MIA to Havana in 1999, with zero pax and zero cargo. The night time takeoff roll was incredibly short, and we climbed at an incredible angle of attack into the stars! It was awesome!

Every one of these magnificent Boeing 747's taking off is spectacular! It all started when the #1 747 RA001 DEPARTED THE RUNWAY IN EVERETT WASH Feb 1969. After that it just kept getting better... As far as the most beautiful 747 ever, that award has to go to the very FIRST 747; "THE QUEEN OF THE SKIES, "RA 001" as it is recognized by. But we all seem to have our own favorites and the 400 hundred is certainly NO exception... Its purely stunning!! Today Boeing is relying on the Dash 8 as its last big winner in the 747 class. The sun is setting on the 747 generally speaking. The new ultra efficient twin engine birds are dominating the skies including Air Bus models. But we believe Boeing builds the best of these newer models..Everyone is holding out and waiting for the new 777x with the composite wing...

I flew from Honolulu to Sydney on a 747 back in 1976 and we barely made it airborne before we came to the end of the runway. But there was an extra amount of cargo onboard and every seat had a passenger or crew. So on this flight the weight was for sure light by comparison.

It was probably empty or nearly empty, and with a small amount of fuel. Also, the steepness of its climb gives away how lightweight it was. A fully loaded long distance 747 takes about 2 miles of runway and 50 to 60 seconds to lift off.. This one appeared to lift off in under a half mile..

looking at Google satellite views I'm guessing that there is a footpath leading from the back of the Airport Inn to the perimeter fence. Altrincham Road it appears to start from?

Yes there is a foothpath! We stayed in the Airport Inn for a couple of nights. Ifyou park at the Airport Inn Hotel you can easily go there by foot in 10min. In 1999, I was on a Lufthansa 747-400 AMS/DFW First Class. It, along with a KLM Business Class flight a year earlier FRA/IAH, were the two finest flights I have ever taken. Bar none. And I have traveled extensively. The KLM stopped in ATL and almost all pax disembarked. Change of crew as well. Between ATL and DFW, I was the only person in First Class. There were two pax in Business, and a smattering in Coach. The plane probably had very little fuel aboard. The pilot put the pedal to the metal, and that plane rolled about ten feet then shot into the air like a fighter. The acceleration was phenomenal! It felt like we were going 500mph before the end of the runway. Exhilarating!

Lax. The longest Time from T/O to rotation was :58 secs roll out. L1011-200. Rwy used was 14000 feet. Passengers OB 250. Loaded to Maximum cargo, 80,000 pounds of JET A fuel. I was in the jump seat as observers .

I saw an AA 747 do exactly that in Phoenix. It did not look like it was picking up too much speed, so I began wondering how is it going to get off the ground; next thing I know, the nose lifts up and then the whole plane starts towards the sky; I could not believe how little runway it used.

i used to count the time between spooling up the engines and wheels off ground. A typically loaded 747 would take 45-50 secs so was this an empty positioning flight ? The fastest take-off I've experienced wwas on a lightly loaded Luftie A320 from LHR to FRA. A stunning 12 seconds !
