Maybe not myself, but it sounds to me that you guys DID actually know Byron. The truth is, you don't cry for a person you truly don't know. You knew his name, you knew what he looked like, what he sounded like. Over time you would probably begin to know what his personality is like. To me, that's certainly knowing someone. You are not wanting to cry for some guy you've never met, you are crying for a friend. Although he may have not of known you, he certainly knew of your existence. And that is an emotional connection worth crying over.
