An insightful analysis and efficacious post mortem of the marquee final. Definitely Novak has reinvented himself and finally I saw glimpses of Edberg in Novak's volleying skills. It is strange he is not using this net rushing regularly. With ageing, this is one of the best tactical options he can compete with the young generation.

I believe its strategic. If he starts using it against everyone all the time, people will realize that they need to learn how to counter it and make adjustments. Its pretty much like Alcaraz having amazing drop shot and using it constantly and how match was going toward the end, Daniil was being able to read his drop shot intentions more often and occasionally steal the point. So i guess idea is to not overexpose your best weapon

I 100% agree with Steve regarding Ferrero's coaching of Carlos. It's not illegal but the fact that on basically every major point, he's looking for Ferrero to tell him what to do is very unconventional and not the right strategy moving forward imo. Carlos should understand how to play points based on the game score by himself; tennis is an individual sport at the end of the day and part of high level tennis is unpredictability. At the end of the Medvedev match, Carlos felt predictable. Looking at his box once in a while or conversing with them generally is one thing but asking them for tactics for each point seems excessive

I will say that in the late 90's and very early 2000's more tv viewers were actually tuning into the WTA of all things for some slams, particularly Wimbledon because a lot found "servebot and volley" and 2/3 shot "rallies" all match pretty repetitive.

When I watched carlos vs medvedev I thought carlos had figured out a way back into the match by hitting short slices and baiting medvedev to come into the net so carlos would pass or lob him, but he didn’t end up using that strategy too much. Also medvedev started hesitating to go into the net so that prevented that tactic

Coaching or not, the problem with Carlos' legacy, if he goes on to create a huge one will be for no fault of his, having had absolutely no good competition. The Big 3 had each other and Novak has faced and beaten Meddy's gen and now Carlos' gen.

Nice Shirt Gill!!!! I truly believe that most people miss the genius of Novak. If You look at the way he has approached his career, it has been an evolution of conquering a physical disability by dieting far beyond the capabilities of the mere mortals. Then he became a perfectionist in his lifestyle to build a cardio fitness that could outlast any other player. And now, he's transitioning his forehand, volley skills and service game in order to successfully defeat his opponents in the ladder stages of his career. The guy is a once in a lifetime soul (not just tennis player) that's able to display the perfect combination of will, desire to gather knowledge and a rare GOD given athletic talent that we may not see again. Everyone who reads this, please cherish the moments we're able to watch this guy play tennis. Otherwise history will tell his story similar to that of his fellow countryman Nicola Tesla. Never appreciated when he was in our mist, but wishing we had access to his genius.

I believe that from now onwards and for the coming 12 months, Novak's targets are: 1. Ronal Garros for completing 4 times at least all slams 2a. Monte Carlo for completing 3 times at least all 1000s. 2b. Equal importance as the above, Wimbleton for equalizing the Roger's tournament record. 4. AO to extend his record in slams but with a very possible side effect as well (if not primarily for this). If Nole wins AO I believe that Rafa will not come back. 5a. US Open, I case he wins the three first slams for the year (very demanding and difficult) to complete calendar grand slam. 5b. If not, the Olympic Games to win a medal for Serbia. 7. ATP Final for the absolute record. 8. 1st in the ranking at the end of the year. 9. 400+ weeks as no.1. 10. If he wins 3+ tournaments in the coming 12 months, he will target the RF record of tournament wins in 2025. Not few for the GOAT. But for reasons like these he is the GOAT.

These episodes are so fun and insightful to listen to. Two masters discussing tennis. So special and perhaps would love even more than just 4 times a year. One thing I couldn’t understand, why did Steve Flink constantly refer to Daniil as Daniel. It’s just a bit grating to my ears especially since he obviously knows the proper way to pronounce it. Almost as if doing it on purpose. Why? Why? Especially in an international sport like tennis where commentators and analysts always try to pronounce the names accurately. He even kind of messed up pronouncing Zverev. He said “Zzerev’ completely omitting the first ‘v’ sound. Even Gill said ‘Daniil’ several times during the discussion and still Flink kept saying Daniel. Maybe just me, but really annoyed because Flink is not some casual fan. Covering tennis is his career, he obviously knows how to pronounce ‘Daniil’.

It would be interesting to see what would happen with Alcaraz if they decided to stop allowing the coaching. All of his success on tour has come during the two seasons that it has been allowed. Good Analysis. I felt Medvedev lost confidence(understandable when 2 sets down, especially after having a set point) or desire in the 3rd. Had he won that with Joker's body not in ideal shape he may well have won the 4th and 5th. I think he needs to improve his 5 set mentality, 2 sets down, or up as we saw in Aus V Nadal, is something you need to put in the back of your mind and focus on the 'now'! When you look at Joker, Nadal, Federer....they see or saw 2 sets down as a challenge, now is the time they can test ''what they are made of, are they champions or not''.

Yeah agreed, I think medvedev was super confident from the semifinals and given his past successes against djokovic he was probably really frustrated to somehow find himself down 0-2 Sometimes his mental state is unbreakable, other times it’s laughable

@@bsrussian Djokovic wasn't physically and mentally wasted this time unlike 2021 and even at 2 years older he was able to Serb and volley his way to victory. Quality performance. 10 to 5 in the head to head now which is a nice round multiple. Djokovic was just not going to bend in that second set even when Medvedev was like a wall. Medvedev is mentally strong but Djokovic is the mentally strongest ever. The point at 4-5 in the tie-break where djokovic man-handled Medvedev into the backhand corner to the point of failure was just beautiful.

I am not worried about Carlos at all. I think part of his game is that flair and element of wildness to his game - and probably the Novak - "never miss" type brick wall tennis perhaps isn't so much his thing, and it's quite a fight against his personality and tennis to play that way. Also - spot on Steve - agree JCF gives too many instructions. I think it would help Carlos develop faster to leave him to figure things out. In fact I would go as far as to say that it has contributed to Carlos's losses. Stick to a few "vamos" or maybe like Stuff's coach, bellowing encouragement on his feet!??

Djokovic has now won 3 slams a year four different times(2011, 2015, 2021, and 2023). In comparison, Federer did it thrice(2004, 2006, 2007) and Nadal once(2010). This shows how difficult it is for even all-time greats to accomplish this. If Zverev gets back to 2021/2022 FO level, Rune finds a way to fix his fitness issues, and Sinner continues his upward trajectory, then hardcourts will be very competitive next year. Imagine Djokovic, Alcaraz, Medvedev, Zverev, Sinner, and Rune all going at it.

Gill , why so on the fence about Carlos/Ferreira constant coaching? You've said you aren't in favour of the rule change. It's one thing to argue the other side/benefits, but you are allowed to voice your own views too. Just focusing on execution turns you into a robot and then how can you trust yourself? How can you just let your body's response teach you about what the other guy is doing and how he is challenging you. That scene where he screamed at JCF "where do I serve?" was awful to witness. Like - dont you know what has worked? Havent you been paying attention? He's just relinquishing all responsibility and opportunity to trust himself. It is not edifying to watch, I dont care how well he executes when he's just an automaton, however good the shot-making. He'll never mature into a multiple Slam Champion if he gets so discombobulated by losing a TB that he goes AWOL like that. Like Apo, too much control is emasculating the player and keeping them from maturing by tackling these challenges through trusting their own ability to see whats happening on the court and responding/adapting/problem-solving.

Did you notice Alcaraz performance without Ferrero falls a lot? That intense coaching is turning him into a fully dependent player on Ferrero's input. Not making any good. Actually, this coaching rule must be revised. It's not making any good to the sports. This will enlarge the separation bw players who can pay and travel with a top coach vs those who can't.

Correct me if I am wrong, but couldn't Novak still be ranked World #1 at the end of the year, and also still lose the YE#1 title to Alcaraz? Djokovic is currently 3,260 points ahead in the ATP Rankings, but only 770 points ahead in the singles race. I don't quite understand the dynamic between the two distinctions. It seems like Alcaraz could easily win more points throughout the season, as well as, Djokovic edging out enough points to remain World #1 by the end of November, after the ATP Finals.

I think Medvedev doesn't have the reflexes to return well from closer. Maybe with practice he can improve. Or maybe he just needs to work on hitting a deep cross court lob off the forehand return to keep his opponents honest.

Mednedev and Djokovic are my two favorite interviews as well. And thinking of how well Mednedev plays on Hardcourt-Nadal coming back to beat him after being two sets down I think in 2020 is a testament to Nadal’s Greatness.
