Thanks so much. This really helped with finding the right starting points for this reaction as well as providing a simple technique for varying the concentration. But could you please tell us what molarity of HCl you are using.

I mixed 4.3 g of sodium thoisulfate in 200 mL of water and then used 1.2 M HCl. I reacted 30 mL of the thiosulfate with 20 mL of acid in a small beaker and the reaction took about 1 minute for the "x" to disappear. Then I doubled the mass of thoisulfate (8.6 grams in 200 mL) and ran the reaction again. This time it took about 30 seconds for the 'x' to disappear. It worked really well for me.

Why did she change the amount of sodiumthiosulfate as opposed to changing the amount of hydrochloric acid? If the amount of sodiumthiosulfate is varied, won't you end up with two variables? Adding more sodiumthiosulfate will result in more sulfur formed (so a thicker cloud) and will simultaneously result in a faster reaction.

Very nice demonstration. And a smelly one, usually. However, how come the dependence [thiosulphate] vs 1/time is linear?! If the reaction is considered to be first order, then linear is ln[thiosulphate] vs time. [thiosulphate] vs 1/time is not even close to linear. Am I missing something?

The graphs are wrong. In this case the time is the dependant variable should be placed on y axis.
@marcokostadinov734 жыл бұрын
Nope. The graphs are representing the change in concentration with time within a single experiment. They are not showing how different initial concentrations affect the time needed to reach that point when the X disappears. Well, at least c=f(t). Because c=f(1/t) is... I have no idea where did this come from. It is non-sense. For first order reaction, linear is the dependence ln(c) = f(t).
@alexanderbontempo5544 жыл бұрын
@@marcokostadinov73 She Is acting on the concentration and misure the time associate with each concentration. The variable that she is acting on is concentration so is the independent variable. Time is what she measure so it depends on the the concentration she is measuring
@marcokostadinov734 жыл бұрын
@@alexanderbontempo554 You are correct. But she doesn't say that the graph represents her experiment (and in fact, it does not). She says "if we plot concentration vs time", not mentioning "time needed for the X to disappear" or anything else linking it to her data. We may well be both correct. :) Anyway, we are arguing about something of importance slightly higher than zero.
@alexanderbontempo5544 жыл бұрын
@@marcokostadinov73 in practice it doesn't have any impact. But being for educational porpose i would be more rigorous, actually would be the perfect situation to explain how to do a graph. If was in some other circumstances I wouldn't mind. Just that.

The independent variable is the concentration of the Sodium Thiosulphate since that is what is changing and the dependent variable is what you are measuring and for this instance, it will be the reaction rate (in seconds). Hope this helped and sorry for the delay.

@Synnefrenia7 жыл бұрын
Use the formula c1v1 = c2v2, where c1 is concentration before diluting and c2 is concentration after diluting (same for v). For example, in the second trial she used 40.0 mL of 0.15 mol/L stock solution and 10.0 mL of water to form 50.0 mL of diluted solution. The calculation would look like: (0.15 mol/L)(0.0400 L) = (0.0500 L)(c2). Solve for c2 and you get 0.12 mol/L, which is what she has written in her chart.
