@@SurvivalTheory BTW . You are the first I have ever seen do the charcloth and fatwood combo. without a bird's nest. I watch a lot of different guys and gals . That was a first for me to see or consider. That's what makes a good video into a great video. Making someone think outside the box.

good video to get people to think outside of the box. I think a lot of people take the name "flint and steel" too literally., I have even used tempered glass that was pretty thick and once I used 2 pieces of metal without any type of rock or glass. The trick is having something harder than the steel so it shaves pieces of the steel off.

Chert, flint, jasper, quartz are all the same family. I've learned that it comes down to the steel more than the stone. 99% of rocks I pick that are in this family will throw sparks so long as I'm using a proper steel. Edges isn't even much of a concern, and tbh I keep mine a bit more dull, and I can't tell you how ma y times I've missed and hit my knuckles with a sharp rock, lol. Awesome vid. You're the only guy I've seen do this comparison.

It comes down to the hardness of the stone and a workable sharp edge on that stone, that and proper technique. Plus either high carbon steels or now days titanium.
@robvegart
@robvegart Жыл бұрын
Yup! As well as proper steel, sharp edge on rock is a plus, and everything else should fall into place..

Char cloth gets 'stale'' after a while, and then does not take a spark. I don't know when it gets too old, though. Perhaps it just needs to be in an airtight container?
@SurvivalTheory
@SurvivalTheory 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, without an airtight container I think mine absorbs too much humidity over time and gets stale. Then it needs a bigger and hotter spark. Thanks for watching and commenting!
