I use cardboard for wads that I cut with a die I made from thin wall steel conduit. I use 1 over the powder and 2 over the shot. I smear a little bore lube around the edge to make them easier to load and keep moisture out of the powder. My patterns are about the same as these in the video. My way is no better or worse but it works good for me. LOL

There is a book called The Art of Shooting Flying writen in 1727 by one of the famous shooting sports of the day in England. He suggests the exact same load for his 20 gauge fowlers. He used wads punched from leather or wool hat material. He suggested trying various wads and testing to see what was the best distance for s particular gun and load and taking the shot at game at that distance as often as possible. They had shot towers by then and many tons of shot were imported into the Americas.

I have a fusil de chasse I built from a Pecatonica River parts set. It is a beautiful gun and effective at 20 and 30 yards. I use a card and a bit of tow over the powder charge and then use two of the paper strips set at 90 degrees from one another to form a sort of shot cup. I too use a heavy charge of shot and top off with an over shot card.

I wandered if you ever have a free day and wouldn't mind could you do a video showing about misfire rates on the pedisoli brown bess. That shows a ratio of misfires to shots so we can see the difference and if its worth doubling the cost for a brown bess from pedisoli please.

I have a question if you wouldn't mind please. One of your videos from 4 years ago you used a cushion wad to prevent shot deformation. But both this video and the original with the clay birds you didn't.... is it because of being period correct or have you determined that the additional cushion wad was not beneficial? Thanks for the help.

Sam Cronk Cushion wads are very beneficial, but they are a 19th century invention. In these videos I have been using strictly 18th century techniques.

Maybe a tad naive from the old country (Britain), but a question.... I have been using a muzzle loading Hawken smoothbore, Italian made, percussion piece of .50 calibre. I normally use about 55 grains with a decent handful of pellets on roosting pigeon in a nearby wood. What do you reckon on me using ball for a little target shooting, how accurate do you think it could be and is it worth my effort... ??
@duelist19549 жыл бұрын
+keyote3 Yes. You should get decent accuracy with patched round balls out to 80 or more yards.

is black powder more forgiving in that you could load a 90 grain charge by volume with a 165 patched round ball, and using the same powder charge load a 385 grain conical bullet without having a problem? I'm pretty sure you couldn't do that with smokeless powder, say 158 grain bullet over the same smokeless charge for a 95 grain bullet.

Great example of how a no-choke scatter gun shoots. Range is everything. However, I would have been interested in a comparison of buck-and-ball to see if there was better or worse accuracy. Might just be a waste of ammo, but then again, with just a ball and a breast shot may do the trick. I know lots of people want to preserve their trophies, but if you are after food, that is just secondary.
@darrellgoodman95856 жыл бұрын

I think a 2 ounce load is a bit heavy for turkey hunting. IMO 1 1/2 oz and a 30 yard maximum shot will produce much better results. I won't even attempt a 40 yard shot with my modern shotguns even though I know many people have taken birds from that distance. I limit myself to 30 yards and allow my calling to lure the turkeys inside the kill zone.
@jamesgenovese73194 жыл бұрын
As you can see the futher you are, the worse it gets. (You have a blown pattern.) Having said that, the stardard load is the 68 gr of 1f Goex for every oz of shot and 30 yds. All modern ammo is loaded with this formula including any load you get on the shelfs today. That is what "2 Drams Equivalents" means. Then get a hard card cuttter and cut hard cards out of 1/4" paist board. 3-4 of them on the charge and another one split 2-3 times for an over shot card and you are done. And there is no reason for the gun to smack your a side of the head.
