I am super new to all of this and am in the process of chalk painting an end table and have had the same issue. I've tried thinning it, I've resanded it a couple times, I just recently got a roller brush and tried that. I really liked it, I might try doing a few more pieces with the roller before I give up on the chalk paint. I'm glad I'm not crazy and this affirms that I'm not doing it all wrong.
@GingerChickRehab4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for sharing that with me . I’m giving it try on some small ideas to see if I can control the brush marks . Will see how it goes. Great idea with the roller. I though it could hurt to try. If doesn’t work for me I know what does.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you for showing us everything in this video! I love when people show the ups and downs because if we only see the perfect side of it when we mess up we fell bad. Well, I do anyway. And this particular video showed me what I did wrong. On my first attempt at this black paint and antiquing wax it turned out horrible! I didn’t realize what I did wrong until now-I used chalk paint! I’d used chalk paint many times before and liked it but didn’t realize it doesn’t work with these same steps. Thanks again!

I think you're over thinking the chalk paint. I usually sand at and then seal it unless I'm sanding black writing on a white background, then I seal the white to keep the black from making it turn gray. And yes with chalk paint a spray bottle with water helps to make the paint smooth. As Jami Ray Vintage always say brush strokes shows it's hand painted, lol! Do what works for you Yvonne. You and your husbands work is BEAUTIFUL!!!!

I had a similar journey as you. I have this beautiful hoosier 1920's style not oak...It was my aunts. I refinished it years ago and mix up a deep red maroon color. I put several layers of top coat on it. sanding in between coats, it is as smooth as silk. but all of a sudden I wanted it lighter in color. when I first painted it I striped the old varnish off the piece I saw on the inside, where my aunt didn't touch when she refinished it, that the original color was a light green. welllllll, I noticed this really cool channel Jami Ray Vintage, they sell chalk paint they make it look sooo easy and good. the paint is pricey. so after watching all the different channels use different chalk paint and pondering on it for 1 -1/2 years I did it. I found a supplier in my town which is what the creator of the paint wants you to do, got the paint, I decided I would paint a chair first before I jumped in on my perfectly finished but now unloved cabinet color. I sanded the chair before I painted it, I'm like you still got to sand , man I thought the wax application was going to kill me. I didn't mention that since I finished the cabinet years ago I have had 2 major neck surgeries and now need another to be done when covid disappears, but back to the cabinet, you can use a liquid top coat, they say......after dealing with that chair and a tiny tiny end table I took the paint to home depot and got a color match to the paint I have always used. rolled on the color. my cabinet is absolutely beautiful. i would send you a photo of it but I don't know how! I used a stencil to create a scandinavia type feel. I didn't have the physical ability to paint the thing 3 to 4 times. I knew I had to get it right the first time, I'm glad I painted two small pieces to get the feel. and yes I sprayed my brush with water--- yaddda yaddda, all the tricks, you just have to use what you use to get the look you love, it's all personal.
@GingerChickRehab4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for sharing that. Yes I'll stick with my cost efficient way. But they do, do beautiful work. But in my area I couldn't charge the price I would have to ask for it. It would just sit.

Have you tried the chalk paint out of a sprayer? I can water it down a bit and use it in my airbrush gun. You can get dry tip, you just have to keep up with cleaning the tip. Or maybe try Floetrol? I know its for latex but Ive used it with acrylic paint and worked so maybe it will with chalk paint to reduce those brush lines.

I have been watching you and Cory both all year. Glad you found each other! Also happy you and Chris seem to be feeling better. Don't give up completely on chalk paint. Huge debate on which one is better, some people actually like the brush strokes, yes you can use water or a roller to minimize that. However, all that aside, you can use chalk paint in a sprayer, which I know is your preferred method. It just has to be watered down a bit. There are several tutorials online. Junk Monkey Paint has a good tutorial, so does Jami Ray Vintage. Same basic process for all brands chalk paints. Also, distress before the poly. I hope you give chalk paint one more try before giving up on it. Love your work!

You can use chalk paint in a sprayer for a smoother finish you just have to water it down a little bit.

Thank you for sharing that. This brand was really thick. I do think it was the brand I used.

@@GingerChickRehab your do amazing work, love watching your flips. I’ve tried that chalk paint and had similar luck, I love chalk paint but didn’t love that brand in the dark colors. I love how your black pieces turn out with the paint you traditionally use, always beautiful.

I love both pieces! I’ve also found myself preferring regular paint as opposed to chalk paint. Thanks for showing the difference. I’m sure you weren’t thrilled with having to redo your pieces. It’s a lot of work!❤️

When I use chalk paint, I usually dip my brush in water before putting it in the paint to get a smoother finish.

Beautiful finished pieces as always! I use chalk paint but only for small projects or when crafting. Even then, I always sand it so that it feels smooth to the touch and then distress and wax seal it. It was interesting to see it used on a bigger pieces of furniture. I give you a lot of credit for trying it and I'm sorry that it didn't work out for you. I don't think I would like that look either. I like furniture to look smooth and without brush strokes.

Thank you for sharing that. We used it on the furniture piece after receiving so many comments on the piece that we sprayed of the same material and it peeled off. Lots of viewers said to use chalk paint. Well we at least tried it. 🤗

Way off topic, but omgoodness your hair is everything! You're not alone... I'm not a fan of chalk paint either, maybe one day just not today lol. Your pieces turned out beautifully! I learned quite a bit from you! Thanks for sharing!

Both pieces turned out greater than I expected seeing as they weren't nice wood to start with. The finishes look great. Sorry you didn't have much luck with the chalk paint. It's not for everyone and your look is a part of your brand at your shop.

Thank you. Yes that’s how we feel. I don’t want it to look like we’re selling someone else’s work. Thanks for noticing that💖
