I do have a suggestion, the survival kit should be able to build the parachutes. that would allow you to make use of the parachutes to transverse down large cliffs better. it also gives some safety to the early start vehicle.

ACS spawns after a threshold PCS limit in one area to destroy grids that are "too large". Each time its spawned in the same place, the "threat" is increased, which makes each spawn potentially more successful at destroying grids above that PCS limit. Allow the ACS to remain in that area and not despawn, to make a temporary danger area. Have ACS be of various factions that will attack each-other, however, leaving behind wreckage that will be exploitable later.

You mentioned wondering why the respawn pod marker is so far off from the pod itself. I ran into this with a respawn mod I made as well, and determined that marker is placed at the original origin block of the grid, so the first block you place down. If you're anything like me, you probably built this vehicle off of a sprue, and so wherever that first block of the sprue was determined where the marker appears, even if the block is no longer present.

Heres something to bear in mind if you have "voxel destruction" turned off: Not only do voxels not take damage so mining etc doesnt work voxels do not damage grids so crashes are irrelevant. I tested by dropping an unpowered small grid ship nose first with voxel damage off and you get the noise of collision and the collision physics, bouncing etc but the grid takes no damage. It probably means with voxel damage off rolling your rover isnt going to be a problem as far as damage, just the inconvienience of getting it back on its wheels.

What about not using GPSs? You can make a "GPS" by using triangulation - set up antennas around the world and note the location of places their distance from some of these antennas. You can use a datapad to keep track of the locations and their distances. That way, when you want to reach certain locations, you kind of need to use the "treasure map" datapad you created. You make a minigame out of the basic act of going to places!
@justifiablyhuman
@justifiablyhuman Жыл бұрын
If you make 2 reference GPS points that are a bit away from each other so that they are different distances from the target point, then where the 2 arcs intersect will be at your target. Technically there are 2 intersecting points where the circles converge but one will be in the opposite direction.
@justifiablyhuman
@justifiablyhuman Жыл бұрын
Also, they don't need to be different distances from the target, but they should probably be at least 100 meters from each other as measured from the perpendicular line between the first point and the target.
@justifiablyhuman
@justifiablyhuman Жыл бұрын
Compass could also do it, and then you'd just need to add the bearing to the distance on the reference point. But it won't be as accurate over long distances as triangulation.

The nice thing about a sandbox game is that we can each tailor our own desired experience with mod sets. if we're discussing game design for fun though, I think equipment tiers are a design tool like anything else. A first person shooter game can be very fun with only a single weapon, or a dismal failure with the typical weapon tiers of successful FPS games (pistol, SMG, rifle, MG, sniper, rocket/grenade launcher). Like you said, interesting player experiences are the goal. Part of that is player choices. If SE had only 1 type of universally effective thruster (e.g. a hypothetical hydrogen thruster but with no fuel requirement), there would be no choice. But because we have 3 distinct thruster types separated by tiers of component requirements, we have a kind of progression and tier structure. However, the 3 thrusters are distinguished by distinct conditional advantages -- thrust output in atmo, space, and with fuel constraints. It's not the mere fact of tiers that makes them a cheap ploy for extending gameplay -- it's how engaging we make the player choice between tiers. e.g. we could have 3 tiers of atmo thrusters, with a cheap T1 atmo thruster that uses more steel plates, less of other components, has more mass, puts out less thrust, uses more power, has more block integrity -- think of it as a lower tech brute force 1950s quality engine, cheap to build but power/mass inefficient. T2 atmo equiv to the actual vanilla atmo thruster. T3 atmo that uses fewer steel plates, more of other components, less mass, puts out more thrust, uses less power, has less block integrity -- it's a higher tech, more efficient version, but very fragile. Then alternative armored atmo thrusters at each tier that use even more steel plates but use disproportionately more power, providing a trade-off in durability versus power cost to operate. Or high-performance thrusters that increase power consumption by twice as much, for +50% thrust (plus more expensive components, etc) for a decision on diminishing marginal returns. These are tiers of thruster quality and performance, but each one has both positives and negatives, necessitating a player decision in picking the desired trade-off for the each use case. Should a miner ship have durable thrusters, making it more resistant to operator failure? Or lighter weight to permit more payload per trip? or more thrust for more payload, but at the cost of reduced endurance? For a fighting ship, should thrust output be prioritized (for a fast attack role), or block integrity for survivability (for a ship of the line)? Straight tiers would be less interesting, I agree. If higher tiers are just straight upgrades with no trade-offs other than cost, then once the player accumulates enough resources to pay the cost, there's no decision required of the player -- of course you upgrade every time. Even here though, there is a bit of a trade-off -- whether it's enough to be a significant factor in player choice, depends on the magnitude of the trade-off: A more expensive single thruster with twice the thrust for the same mass (well, not quite, b/c SE inherently calculates block integrity (and mass?) from the components used) is a more vulnerable single point of failure compared to using the less efficient but more survivable two lower tier thrusters -- they cost twice the mass for the same total thrust, but provide twice the integrity and keep 50% of thrust when 50% integrity is destroyed. Something that SE doesn't do much with is providing synergy opportunities. A ship/grid specializing in more of a certain type of functional block could acquire advantages through abstracted economy of scale in design. e.g. mounting 2 small cargo blocks adjacent to each other grants +2% to their combined cargo capacity, or +3% for large cargo blocks; a cargo freighter mounting 3 large cargo blocks in a single row would have a bonus +10% capacity. Similar for thrusters, using variable such as using less hydrogen/power, providing more thrust, etc. A universal one for all blocks could be mass savings or component savings for adjacency. There are probably tons of other more original ideas, but my limited simian brain can't think of any right now.
@Flipsie
@Flipsie Жыл бұрын
When I'm talking about tiers being bad I'm talking about a system where one tier is made completely obsolete by the next, if it isn't then it's not a 'tier' system it's providing alternatives with different functions. All games are benefited by giving the player meaningful choice not meaningless larger numbers :)

A way of adding something large without giving too much resources beyond lots of iron: Since large things are easy to find, large things will generally already be pretty much picked clean. You could even include signs of earlier salvaging in the build, (e.g. systems ground down to get at the choice parts, abandoned scaffolding or even a hole in the side where something big got removed). Something big is also an excuse to spawn hostiles. Possibly someone else salvaging it, possibly someone who figures that there is more to be gained by grabbing fully functional vehicles and their cargo. As for the idea of a "theme solar system": In the massively crossed over Undocumented Features setting, Japri Park, (of Kemono Friends), is an entire planet[1]. It is not unique in being at this scale. [1] If you read "With Friends Like These", there are bonus STR points for figuring out what else happened on this planet before the reveal. Also for figuring out who one characters parents are, (hint: Her dad's a big movie star).

2:44:12 There's a slightly more accurate way to use GPS to find wrecks. Place one GPS marker with the distance as you do, then travel in the direction of the signal for a few hundred meters and plunk another GPS marker down. Then drive out the distance. When you look back at your two markers, if they're on top of each other, you're in the right spot. If the 2nd marker is off of the first one, then you'll know which way to go.

51:00 Schrödinger's battery. 1:11:00 Factorio has the poblem of starting off fun, but then you get to a point where in order to progress quicky enough for it to not feel like an idle game, you need to have factories that build factories that build drones that lay hundreds of kilometers of train track for you... And you end up mostly being a spectator during endgame, because anything you do by hand will take too long to be worth doing. A reverse of Satisfactory's issue which is the first two hours of Satisfactory (if you know how to rush it, else it can be five) are a boring grind through manually building and feeding dozens of leaf burning generators so you can have enough machines running to progress at a not-sleep-inducing pace. I have a consistently effective means of stopping my own hiccups: brief meditation. I can stop them in seconds, and a few more seconds of concentrated effort to keep my mind clear will keep them gone, without fail. I find them to be the result of various trains of thought (not all conscious) competing for priority. Being annoyed by them will make them more persistent because that adds another competing thought process. Now that I'm well practiced at it, this method works 100% of the time for me. Everyone else that I've offered this solution to has abandoned it after a time or two of failure. That's not enough practice to get good at anything, especially if you're not already used to manually steering your own thoughts and emotions.

I've been thinking that perhaps we have to specialize each. So you don't get locked missing specifically one, but simultaneously you have tough choices to make. What singular resource do you want enough to lock a salvaged assembler. The final unlock would be the assembler blueprint. So you still need a farm of them to do things, but at least now you don't have to go searching. Also thinking that some baseline power is needed. Wind would be land bound, solar is fragile. Tempted to unlock solar early, wind middle of a tech tree.

Would it be possible to do this in space as well so you could continue on in space trying to make a station or something? If the problem is allowing refining after the fact, would it be possible to make the planets devoid of mine-able resources?
@AlanGChenery
@AlanGChenery Жыл бұрын
With regards to your comments about voxel damage and performance.... If always sort of hoped for a mining block that you place on the surface near a relevant ore and it VERY slowly converts a chunk of power into a little of that ore (and some rock). Like a nerfed version of that old mining laser platform mod. It gives a way of getting every resource, with voxel damage off, while still requiring exploration to find the ore (and a suitable place to build the base) But adds the complexity of building and maintaining these little mining stations, and gathering their proceeds back to base.

With aggressive voxel resets, you need to be sure to tell everyone playing that they need to place an active grid near any hole they don't want filled. I ran aggressive vowel resets on my 2 servers, and it worked great to keep the server running smoothly, but I had a few players that would forget to keep an active grid nearby, so many were digging multiple times.

Good to hear that it was effective in keeping things running better, as to the worries, I would be expecting people to not use underground at all and would be making that clear at the outset and such limitations have been tolerated quite well by the community so far in other forms :)

@@Flipsie underground weren't the problem in my experience, since there was always an active grid present. The issue was with mine shafts. Players either wouldn't remember to place a power source at the shaft, or would let that power source go dead, which would get cleaned up by the server and the hole would fill in.

Congratulations on the addition to your family. This will probably get buried, but I’ll offer you the advice I give to all new parents: 1. BE FORGIVING. Be forgiving of your baby. This is all brand new and scary and the only way they can communicate is by screaming. Be forgiving of your partner. They’re struggling just as much as you are, so when they snap at you or do something wrong or whatever, try to be patient and understand. Finally, be forgiving of YOURSELF. You’re going to have moments where YOU JUST CAN’T anymore. You’re going to have moments where you feel like a failure. You’re going to feel negative emotions and THAT’S NORMAL. You’re okay and the baby will be okay and you’re doing your best. 2. EVERYTHING IS TEMPORARY. The bad times, however bad they may be, will eventually end. You can get through this. Just be strong and patient. The good times, the sweet blissful moments: those are also temporary. You won’t always be able to hold them like that. They won’t always fall asleep on you. Do your best to be present and make memories because someday everything will be different. You seem like a good person and you seem like you’re going to be a great dad. Enjoy the next few months, it’s a wild ride!

Regarding vehicles and buildings I would scatter the place with some abandoned towns, which have places like a diner and a garage, Midwest 1950's style, and maybe even a factory that could give you an assembler. As far as the headcanon goes, it would work great if it's not a theme park, but the planet is a backdrop for a TV show where you as engineers are the (more or less unwilling) participants, and getting off the planet is your ticket to the big prize. i know you say you dont want assemblers and refiners, but if mining is disabled does it make that much difference. its not like people can scavenge up all materials straight away. infact if you could say disassemble item to make that part you dearly need, how is that not living the scrapping life style.... id possibly make the returns 20% of normal so you would want to be damn sure about that disassemble. besides its a very aussie thing to turn junk into something useful. ive done it with my car a few times... infact ive even modified a few parts to make the old broken part no longer needed. maybe you could make a scrappers version of certain machines and use those instead.

Just a thought for a mod that "could" work with this. fully grind down so many of a forbidden block, get the ability to place one of it. not sure how to make that happen, but im thinking of a chance drop Looks cool, looking forward to to playing more
@Flipsie
@Flipsie Жыл бұрын
The grind-to-learn mod worked that way although it was only needing to find a single block in that instance. At this stage I'd prefer not to go down that path because I like the idea of having a junkyard of blocks at my base 'just in case' I end up needing them :D

Looking forwards to this scenario coming out, but firstly- the clang with the engine was most CERTAINLY your fault- you should know better (Still have voted to reload - it's testing time.) Just thinking at the end - can you and Capac have a crane-truck race, but rather than that large cargo container use an armed large-grid warhead? First to make it 5kms without blowing up wins... An in-game plushie?

could your mod tweak the storage in a connector (or remove the stock one and add a new one)? so there isn't a perverse incentive to use connectors as cargo storage?

Getting off the edge of the cliff when searching for something you know is not in the canyon would drastically increase your chances of finding it. You can almost double your visible area if you keep the cliff barely in view. Then when the first pass doesn't find it, go even farther from the cliff so you cover new ground instead of searching where you've already looked.

@@Flipsie True, but given “no mining” “no vaporators” and the amount of hydrogen needed for a launch of a decent ship (since you said you weren’t just going with a thruster and tank with seat), it would be the most elegant solution short a 150 episode series if the hydrogen amount you got this time is any indication of the supply.

For managing cargo space exploits, can you reduce the cargo capacity of connectors? Reducing it to 0 might mess with its ability to pass items, but you'd only need to reduce it to below the capacity of a small grid 1x1x1 cargo container to discourage spam. And if players still do spam them, there's at least more items in the connector blocks themselves than in their inventory. [edit:] I keep watching for 5 more seconds and someone mentions this exact idea in chat at 3:20:52

SUGGESTION! how about when you grind parts you get half of the resources as Scrap specific to each component gathered? having to use refineries as smelters ... or having to use assemblers to repair other more complicated ones? involving logistic in the game in a way?
@Flipsie
@Flipsie Жыл бұрын
From what I understand of how to do things with assemblers that might be possible, though my fear would be that the assembler wouldn't add much in the way of meaningful logistics as it would just be a magical black box you put things in and the pop out repaired. For me the main engineering/logistics challenge that's within reach of my modding skills is creating a need for whole blocks to be moved :)
