I'd agree that WKX definitely taught himself to compensate; probably not only to show off, but rather to find a sort of bridge to the "human" world. Since Ghost Valley is only reigned by fear and hate, and many people always say that love is one of humanity's greatest virtues - I can see how WKX would especially get himself familiar with romantic poems. Thanks to the brilliant writings of the scriptwriter, and to Gong Jun as Wen Ke Xing for bringing the dialogues to life. Which in turn, make Word of Honor such a gem drama to watch. Wen Ke Xing is one of the most exciting multi-dimensional characters I’ve ever seen on screen. Actually, Lan Zhan is very educated. He just does that thing where he uses the specific words needed and it shows educated he is that he can get away with using single word answers. Wei Wuxian is the one who uses poetry to flirt or even have fun like he did with the Yuandao thing since it was a play on words with a known poem and the onomatopoeias. But then, Wen Kexing and Wei Wuxian are both of the similar "chaotic gremlin" archetype who flirt with their love interest.

One of the many things which made me love this drama more is this clever usage of poetry to express their emotions and thoughts. As a non-Chinese speaker, even though I don't understand any of it without a clear explanation I still enjoy it to the root. Poetry in all languages has this universal connection to human emotion. I really loved the way you explained every word and their history. 'Flirt with Style' is the perfect description for WKX. I'm so very impressed by the scriptwriter too. The dedication she put into this work is praise-worthy. Even though this drama had a very low budget and it can be seen very clearly in their production quality - props and CGI, they covered up all that lacking by focusing on script and direction. The ancient Chinese poem about the swan hit me hard because if Wen Kexing ends up sacrificing himself for Zhou Zishu, it will be the ultimate act of love, but it would break Zhou Zishu's heart for good because Wen Kexing is his soulmate so he would never love again. After all the trauma they've both been through, they deserve their happily ever after. 🥺

I am maybe getting the impression that it is not homosexuality as a subject that is censored, but the depiction of it. After all, it is common knowledge and acceptance that there were also such preferences in chinese history. As all these BL dramas showed, you don't need to see strip shows or sexual action or foul language to get all excited about what they mean. And frankly speaking, I must say I find this way even more interesting and elegant. And certainly educational. Hahaha. Unless the people who work in the Censor Office are all "uneducated" , they must surely understand everything AVX has described.

Thank you for this! I'm now watching episode 16 and completely sidetracked by their clothes in the cave scene. ZZS looks like he's dressed for a lazy Sunday brunch at home with his lover - is this my imagination? Of course they have Zhang Cheng Ling with them and it's just a cave in the rain. But Wen Ke Xing is also wearing a robe that has ties at the front, doesn't seem like the usual going-out style. Is it possible to talk a little about styles of robes and any significance in a future video? I am a bit of a seamstress in my spare time so I always get sidetracked with costumes but I have more questions than usual with the WoH costumes, as it seems they are carefully chosen but it's hard to know if there is a language here that I'm missing. And WoH costumes are all so spectacularly well-designed for the aerial scenes, particularly. It is not easy to get the layered fluttering effect during fights and flying, and I think these costumes are the best I've ever seen from that perspective. I watch those bits over and over just to enjoy the beauty of it, like an antique painting.

This sentence is actually from the Japanese writer 夏目漱石(なつめ そうせき, 1867-1916), one of the most famous writer in the Japanese modern literature history. When he was still an English teacher, he once asked his students how would they translate “I love you” into Japanese. One of the student says, “爱しています”, which is the direct translation of I love you. Then 夏目漱石 the writer said to his student: our Japanese are too shy to say that directly. Instead, the line “今夜は月が绮丽ですね(Tonight’s moon is beautiful)” would be enough. We can also interpret this line with the under meaning of “I’d like to watch the moon with you”. The Chinese translation of it is:今晚月色真美.

There's a theory I saw from online that although WKX didn't get lots of chances learning from his parents, but after he got into the ghost valley, he was taken care by Luo Fumeng (Aunt Luo). And it's mentioned in the show that Aunt Luo was from a noble family, and well educated. So WKX probably was taught and influenced by her. I personally think that would make more sense than he teaching himself a lot. On a side note, I also saw that people say because he had seen how his mother being so tough and strong in all the bad times, and how Aunt Luo and all the girls in Ghost Valley suffered in their life, and how those women figures had showed him love and care, he had seen women as only the icon of kindness and beauty, rather than anything sexual. (Red Mansion for your reference). AND that eventually led him to homosexuality. my 5 scents. :)

Really nice review 👍👍 Wen Ken Xing and Zhou Zi Shu, they really show theirs love affection in the air. But many people in the other countries who's dont understand Chinese Languange ( 不懂中文汉语 ) & they never accepted if this is drama adaption from Boy Love novel. They only thought & persist in this drama is only about friendship, brotherhood, bestfriend bromance. Hahahaha....come on...They have to learn chinese languange, literature, idiom, culture, methaphor, so they will understand whats the over all meaning.
