I'd agree that WKX definitely taught himself to compensate; probably not only to show off, but rather to find a sort of bridge to the "human" world. Since Ghost Valley is only reigned by fear and hate, and many people always say that love is one of humanity's greatest virtues - I can see how WKX would especially get himself familiar with romantic poems. One of the many things which made me love this drama more is this clever usage of poetry to express their emotions and thoughts. As a non-Chinese speaker, even though I don't understand any of it without a clear explanation I still enjoy it to the root. Poetry in all languages has this universal connection to human emotion. I really loved the way you explained every word and their history. 'Flirt with Style' is the perfect description for WKX. I'm so very impressed by the scriptwriter too. The dedication she put into this work is praise-worthy. Even though this drama had a very low budget and it can be seen very clearly in their production quality - props and CGI, they covered up all that lacking by focusing on script and direction. It is such a beautifully done drama and the popularity and success it enjoys are truly deserved. Looking forward to more of your videos on Word of Honor. Thank You !!!❤

Actually, Lan Zhan is very educated. He just does that thing where he uses the specific words needed and it shows educated he is that he can get away with using single word answers. Wei Wuxian is the one who uses poetry to flirt or even have fun like he did with the Yuandao thing since it was a play on words with a known poem and the onomatopoeias. But then, Wen Kexing and Wei Wuxian are both of the similar "chaotic gremlin" archetype who flirt with their love interest.

The ancient Chinese poem about the swan hit me hard because if Wen Kexing ends up sacrificing himself for Zhou Zishu, it will be the ultimate act of love, but it would break Zhou Zishu's heart for good because Wen Kexing is his soulmate so he would never love again. After all, it is common knowledge and acceptance that there were also such preferences in chinese history. As all these BL dramas showed, you don't need to see strip shows or sexual action or foul language to get all excited about what they mean. And frankly speaking, I must say I find this way even more interesting and elegant. And certainly educational. Hahaha. Ooh! Thank you so much for explaining all the poem references! 🙏 This aspect of using poems and idioms in the original novels and their drama adaptations is such a treat to understand! Also shows just how much the original author and the script writer have read literature to be able to weave such apt poem references everywhere in the novel/drama. Very much looking forward to your explanations of poem and idiom references for the remainder of this drama. 😄🙏

Than you so much for these kinds of videos, i actually have a whole folder with screenshots of idioms used in Chinese dramas as i find them so fascinating, to now be able to sneak a peek in the poetry references is like a feast for my soul! I realized halfway through the video that i clicked "like" before even watching this, i just wish i could like it 10x more ^.^

I loved this video!! This really shows the depth and beautiful meaning behind the script and original text. I love that this has so much depth vs just a simple story. Mandarin has so much depth and beautiful stories behind the phrases. I can’t help but fall in love with the culture and language I see portrayed in Dramas.

Wow... thanks for this! This has so many references! With this I am pretty certain the China natives would be so impressed by the amount of subtext/ easter eggs sprinkled through out the shows. I only got the 'you tiao' reference!

thank you @AvenueX ! I always learn so much & love listening to your poetry & culture analysis of these poems! And for this show, since poetry is such a part of how WKX expresses his feelings, I definitely felt like I had a gap in my understanding of his lines! these videos are always wonderful :D

Even though I'm chinese and can roughly make up the meaning of the literature/poetry references. The video covered more in depth and I'm so intrigued rn!! Now I regret not learning it better XD
