This drama may be low budget, but it sure doesn't feel cheap at all. You can feel a lot of care went into telling the story and not just the scripting but in all the production in terms of costume, choreography and even sound effect. The overall aesthetic and feel of this drama is so on point that I have confidence this crew will bring us to a satisfying ending for this first BL adaptation of 2021. Also, while the surface flirting is right there in the beginning, the much deeper love/connection between WKX and ZZS is only slowly being developed/revealed.

Unfortunately, the total investment of this drama is only 30 million yuan, which is almost 4.55 million US dollars. This investment includes all the costs of this drama, and to be honest, it is really very rare. You must know that the salary of any first-line star in China basically starts at 30 million, regardless of whether he has acting skills or not. So the biggest shortcoming of this drama is that it is too poor. If enough investment is obtained, I believe it will be better on the original basis.

Gong Jun is actually surprisingly pulling off this pretty face evil guy quite well. It's charismatic enough to pay attention. Guess it's about just having the right role may be.

The show is garnering a lot of attention for its flirtatiousness, but the more I watch, the more I realise we are underestimating the power of this story. We were all too caught up in the flirting of the beginning episodes, when the real story was slowly developing before our eyes. These two characters, especially Zhou ZiShu, have a lot of depth, and their love is way way more than what we are seeing. Besides most of the flirting at the beginning is actually a front Wen Kexing is putting on. Without spoiling anything, there is a very deep and touching conversation between the two main characters later on in the series. I read this post on Douban, where the person said that he had literally been planning a suicide for a whole year and was planning on doing it on a certain date, but after listening to that conversation he has changed his mind and is desiring to live again. some other comments also shared their similar experience of being touched by their conversation and reigniting a desire to live. I think this says a lot. I feel that this show, superficially is BL heaven, but at its heart, is a Wuxia story of redemption and rebirth.

The script itself is amazing. The banter between the leads, especially in issues that really matter between them, cuts deeply. The dialogue is always loaded in a way that makes you pause and actually *think*. This is why the drama has good rewatch value as well. Surely, it is great at first watch, but true appreciation for the character dynamics and development will only manifest after rewatching. (That, and the leads also carry their scenes well. As if their roles are tailor fit for them. And the chemistry between them... just wow. To think they weren't the first picks for the roles.)

I got my parents hooked on it because of the strong Wuxia elements, which means the blatant flirting isn't as obvious or unacceptable to people outside BL fandom. The love poems and euphemisms like the "贴烧饼“ scene would probably not register with many people who are not steeped in Chinese literature. My parents grew up on a diet of old Shaw Brothers Wuxia movies, especially the Gu Long adaptions staring Di Long and Derek Yee, and many of those would probably qualify for BL when viewed with today's lenses. LOL. The fact that the other platforms have more expensive BL adaptations waiting to be released actually reduces the probability of them trying to sabotage this drama (and cause an unwanted blanket ban that would affect their releases). I am more worried about the crazy fans of other dramas/actors trying to pick a fight and create negativity on the internet simply because this drama has a higher Douban rating than their favourites.

Yeah, there are a lot of immature people out there shitting on this drama simply because it's overstepping their favourite, the fan groups of certain popular actors (I don't think I need to name names for you to know who they are) are banning their fans from watching this drama because they are scared that the fans are going to change their loyalty, but if anything, they are all a reflection of how well this drama is doing. Also, something else I find admiring and refreshing is that the main actors both told their fans to not fight with these haters or control the direction of comments (不要控屏), which allows everyone to talk freely about the drama, positively or negatively. I find this very cool because you don't see people do this in the industry, especially not with rising actors like them. And either way, this drama has enough 自来水 fans they really don't need to worry about haters :)

Simon Gong Jun is one of the greatest actors out there. You sound like you've only seen him in those cheesy situation comedies where he plays a handsome prop to a darling leading Lady, stifling his brilliant talent as a leading man. His personality, use of language, gesture and reactions are always realistic giving us a glimpse into a great actors technique. I studied acting and Gong Jun is a master. Watch him work his magic. I just watched some interviews of Gong Jun and OMG he’s so freaking CUTE!! He has such a warm bubbly “giant puppy” personality that laughs a lot and gets teased by his fans a lot. I can totally see why he would suit playful characters like the one in this drama, instead of some typical “rich and arrogant billionaire” or “strong and silent tough guy” male love interest in those BG dramas. And I have to say...his actual personality feels so soft and so “bottom” material XDD But it means that his acting skills have indeed improved a lot to able to be pull off such a TOP character👏👏👏

Gong Jun was also bright eyed and playful in the other BL drama he did, “Advance Bravely”. It could be that he’s just able to feel more comfortable with men. I don’t mean sexually or that it in any way informs us of his sexuality. I mean that it might be uncomfortable to do romantic scenes and playfulness with women, if you’re a more reserved person about gender interactions. He just seems so much more relaxed and into these two roles.

They didn’t even try to hide the flirting. I love the series despite it’s flaws because it feels... genuine. Kicking off this year’s BL adaption with a strongly charming start despite budgetary constraints. Also Zhou Ye is a queen. Oh and the Weibo teasing with Gong Jun’s previous BL costar (from Advanced Bravely) makes pretty good memes.

Just started watching this series yesterday and I'm hooked! I totally get what you mean about wanting things to be subtler (at least at the beginning) so that we as viewer have more work to do (show, don't tell!), but since we almost NEVER get "show" in cdramas for this kind of relationship, this drama's "obviousness" feels more "refreshing" to me. I at least want to live in a world where cdramas can easily have the choice of doing either or both. Maybe wishful thinking, but let's see how far Word of Honor gets...

I know some lines that are dubbed over the original. The CV says “underneath your mask there must be a huge surprise”, but the original says (if you can read Gong Jun’s lips) “underneath your mask there must be a beauty”; right after the scene where they were drugged and hallucinated, A’Xu asked WKX what he was hallucinating, the CV says “when I was young, I put a dead mouse in my mom’s bed and she chased me down the streets”, but Gong Jun actually says something to the effect of “XXOO with my lover”.

International fan here and a Priest fan, and though I haven't read Tale of the Wanderers, I'm actually enjoying this series in ways that I did not expect. When the trailer for episode 6 came out, I started screaming like a teenaged fangirl because I've never seen a wuxia BL drama be that physical. The last time I did that much screaming was when Lan Wangji asked Wei Wuxian what relationship they had. I didn't mind the spoilers since I sometimes read the endings of BL novels to find out if it's going to make me cry sad tears, haha. I've read Qi Ye, and OMG, thank you for the information because now I'm looking forward to seeing Jing Beiyuan (I remember he had white hair in his previous life). Good to know that these stories are related.

i love slow build up as well but this drama did rly rly well. the flirting and "right at your face" is so refreshing and nice change of pace. I rarely see confidence when it comes to lgbt because of all the hate and controversy about the community. but omg this show rly brought out the different types of relationships that exist. its not always one shy guy liking the dense one, there can be bold, flirty types that genuinely love the person theyre flirting with. and both of them dont automatically fall in love, there is a slow build up of trust and friendship which is slowly becoming a "more than friends" relationship. they did rly well on the "love" aspect of this drama.

I agree with everything except the love part. Almost any Chinese anything (drama, webnovel, etc) I can "feel" the intensity of emotion. This was the only one I couldn't because it "felt" like ZZ didn't care about anything (even getting kidnapped) except trying to somewhat be a good person, until maybe some the last 3 eps. I could "feel" WK desperation for family and acceptance nearly the entire show, but not any deep love.

I have really liked the drama and am hooked. I agree with the bl thing. I prefer for them to kinda know each other and then ya know, turn into the bl that we know right now. I love that they decided to make this available with English subs on The Youku KZbin channel -- so far only 8 episodes are released there, but I am loving it. Considering the low budget for shooting -- yes, you can definitely tell in some scenes, and the green screen is sometimes too obvious. But they have also managed to work with set design, fight scene choreography and camera angles and those are occasionally pretty impressive -- in fact, I love the visuals in this drama (though I confess I am a relative newbie to the genre). I was surprised to hear that people had low expectations of Gong Jun... I've only seen him in Advance Bravely and this, and he is definitely giving his all here! Every time he's on screen, he lights it up. And as a BL fan, I don't mind the blatant flirting at all. I just hope it won't come back to bite them. (Or, that they will give them a tragic ending to balance it out for the censors...) I would DEFINITELY love a video where you explain the actual, censored lines! PLEASE DO! And at least some of the literary references, because unless the subtitles explain those, they pass right above my head.

Omg!!! the best thing that happened to me is finding your channel >< Sharing the same thoughts and looking at different media in their specific contexts and in different perspective is what people need. T____T actually it makes me sad that quite a few of media consumers these days, and I'm sorry for saying this, especially the younger generations tend to overlook the source literature and consequently the core of , not only dramas, most media. Especially adaptations, specifically of the BL genre, combined with other aspects such as fantasy, drama etc. I think a few will agree with me that many dramas, not only C-dramas, have become "commercialized." It's also important to note that quite a few of the audience couldn't even be bothered to learn or at least be familiar with the culture and the context in the world of the different media shown. As such, they fail to appreciate the real and subtle beauty of the pieces may be it the original novel, manhua / donghua or the adaptation. Also~ I'm the same 😅 I'm the type who wants to dig or should I say "cultivate" for sugar than have it served right in front me (I've had my fill with Thai-BLs xD). l have to say that Word of Honor was very bold and that's one of its charms 🤭🤭🤭 I mean who won't fall for Wen Ke Xing's poetic flirting 🙈 The show pushed lots of boundaries, critiqued the norms, called out the "hegemony" and at the same time celebrated the importance of filiality, loyalty, friendship and appreciated the beauty in living a happy simple content life with your soulmate 🤭 Word of Honor is in a league of its own in comparison with its predecessors. Thoooooo I have to say, and many did have the same opinion, that what the story set in the build up of its plot from the first few episodes until 3/4 of the show suddenly died down by the last few episodes. The production was hurried with time and financial constraints and it showed. I think they also got a little bit too ambitious with regards to the characters' backstory and development that they fell back to the usual c-drama paradigm. It felt like they wanted to give certain backstories to some characters for the purpose of sending a message but failed in execution. They used too many characters, altered their relationships and attempted to give them their own narrative whilst overlooking the importance of retaining the roles of other characters for a more coherent story. Kudos to the writer tho, her work shows that she really is a Priest's fan and is familiar and well versed in the universe. Although here lies the concern of "self editing." I mean not everyone is given the opportunity to work with something you are deeply involved and connected with. The understanding of the piece could lead to many different ideas and possibilities to play with when transforming it to a live adaptation. I felt like they wanted to throw too many stuff in the series that it felt "random." JING BEIYUAN AND WU XI! But my baby Wu Xi's hard work where???? ٩( ᐛ )و

Gong Jun's acting is so good! I was surprised, I mean I know he's decent but here he's phenomenal. And ZZH, of course, no complaints against him either! I didn't think ZZS was that pretty at first and now I think he's a beauty! Once I got to see his coquettish side I can't help but want to pamper and spoil him!

Gong Jun is living this role for real. I personally loved Kexing and Zishu in the novel. I feel like Zishu is a bit more cheeky in it, I hope he later becomes like that in the drama too because his bickering with Kexing is the special sauce. I just found your channel and I'm really looking forward to watching more of your videos! I had no idea that they changed out the leads in this drama! Zhang Zhehan and Gong Jun both do so well, I have a hard time picturing someone else in those roles. I definitely want to see more of Zhou Ye's work, too. She's a total delight and I'm so glad she stayed with the project. I'm only on episode 16 so far (I watched some and then decided I'd pause to read the book before going on, because I was getting kind of confused by the political stuff). The only other book of Priest's that I've read is Silent Reading. This story is so, so different, but it's also really good!

This was my first BL drama (yes, I never watched the highly popular Untamed drama) and love the two male leads so much! Their acting and visuals are so good, and the plot is intriguing! It's so interesting to hear other people's opinions on the series! I recently binge-watched some 16 episodes within a few days time and have now started the drama again. [Rant time] Though there appears to be overly flirtatious Wen Kexing in the beginning episodes of the drama, I feel like a lot of it was down to his original plan. Did he plan to find out Zhou Zishu's identity and use him as a variable in order to find the Glazed Armour? Despite the friendship that they have built up and are building up, Wen Kexing originally planned to use him. So for me, I think the 'flirting' is quite fitting for the situation. He's purposely sugarcoating everything he does in order to coax and find out the most about Zhou Zishu's identity. Yet, somewhere along the way, they have ended up raising a son together LOL. ❤ Love this video and definitely checking out your others!!!!
