35:14 Jerpi lost that game 4 being on 28 and trying fill an L/J dependency before the killscreen only to get twelve poor pieces in a row (S,T,Z,T,O,Z,S,T,S,Z,S,Z). Right when she committed to filling it with the Z, the long bar came. Assuming I got the math right [(4/7)^12], that's about a 0.12% chance for no fitting piece for that long, at best. Absolutely brutal.
@KitaruTC
@KitaruTC 9 ай бұрын
NES Tetris doesn't have flat 1/7 odds for each piece, so the chance of this occurring is very slightly higher. My rough estimate is ~0.15%. The NES Tetris randomizer attempts to reduce the likelihood of direct repetition of the same piece by re-rolling once if there is a match. But also, there is bias in the sources of entropy used and the way the RNG is sampled. We've made tables of how the weird math will behave in different situations. On average, J pieces have ~14.29% chance of appearing, while by comparison L and I pieces each have a slightly reduced ~13.84% chance of appearing. (If we wanted to really get into the weeds, the probability of any given piece is affected by the one dealt before it, but that's more math than I want to figure out at the moment. :p ) So, that's roughly 41.97% chance of receiving L/J/I, or 58.03% of receiving something else. 58.03% ^ 12 ≈ 0.15%.

I'm confused why Jerpi no longer goes by Jerpidude anymore. My whole life people have been telling me "dude" is a gender neutral term.
@KitaruTC
@KitaruTC 9 ай бұрын
@@kovacuator It varies. Historically/etymologically, the word "dude" was primarily male-gendered. Over the centuries it has shifted to become somewhat more neutral (with alternate forms such as "dudette" largely falling out of favor), but it still retains some gendered association. A similar linguistic case is "you guys," which arguably relies on the English language's tendency to default to male terms when addressing mixed-gendered groups. Looking at it from the other angle, it's less common to someone referred to singularly as "this guy" or "this dude" if they are not specifically male-identified.

Yeah, I hear ya. One issue that was only really visible in retrospect was that for the CT2 broadcast, neither the players nor the audience could hear us (the loudspeaker was exclusively for CT1). The only interaction we had was with our co-commentator and the live chat, so it caused us to gravitate towards conversations there rather than always giving play-by-play that had no effect on the room around us. We only got the feedback “more play by play please” from KZbin weeks later after the tournament was over. So it’s for sure in the notes for next year.

Hey, question. How about putting another counter in the graphics that shows the piece difference between the players. I mean, of course you have the line counts, but then you also have the stack height. So sometimes it's not immediate if someone is ahead or behind. Showing the piece difference (so 0 if they have the same piece, +5 if someone is 5 pieces ahead, -5 is he's behind) makes this immediate. (In Sharky's match against Fractal it was quite annoying to always hear that Sharky is ahead, when he actually never really was...)
@ITZsharky1
@ITZsharky1 9 ай бұрын
That is very complicated to implement and also unnecessary. There are 2 different kinds of leads Real Time and Pace Lead, in my match for example, game 2 I had the real time lead for most of that game and in some instance I had the pace lead but that dig cost me my pace advantage.
@dennisamelunxen8283
@dennisamelunxen8283 9 ай бұрын
Hm, you do have the real time score difference though, so I don't quite agree that it's difficult to implement. (In fact, you could just run a counter on the pieces and compare that. Easy peasy) As for unnecessary, yes, and so is the translation of score difference into tetrisses. But it's convenient. Say you have a long drought and finally you see one player getting the I-piece. Then you know the other player will get it too, but when? Well, that number immediately shows you. In fact, I think a relevant argument against it would be that this information could leak to the player and give unfair advantages. Anyway, complaining on a high level here, the coverage of the matches is great.
@ITZsharky1
@ITZsharky1 9 ай бұрын
@@dennisamelunxen8283 no we appreciate the conversations! The real time score difference is very simple in contrast to seeing how far ahead or behind a player in the sequence is. Essentially for real time score difference all that’s being done is reading the scores from both captures and the comparing which is higher. Now to calculate the difference in pieces sequence would probably have to do something similar but with the stats box, however that’s something that the software architect would have to code and requires more calibrations which adds more points of failure. So while yes it is possible, it is very complicated and adds a source of risk with something failing since we are working with 30+. Year old consoles. I appreciate the suggestion though! Definitely something that got me thinking about the feasibility of such a statistic being implemented Edit: also players don’t see any of the graphics that the audience see, we have almost non of the same information that is provided
